Aggression | Kain
Fang set the glaive against her toe and did her best to bend it to breaking. To its credit it didn’t much bend at all. The young woman grinned and pulled the staff off the ground, gripping it tightly between dark, callused palms. This was somethin’ she could use.
It wasn’t just a plain staff, there was a thin blade attached to one end that could be retracted using the leather grip just a few inches from its end. A smooth movement twisted the leather and six inches of steel shot out the far end. Pleased, Fang moved the staff up and around her head so that she could grip it properly.
Her next shift was subtle, near like a person shifting their weight from one foot to the other but the stance was predatory and prepared.
The combination of the staff and her skill with gymnastics made the training session much like a show to watch. In once second Fang was clear across the field and in the next she had pushed off with the butt of her staff and followed it with a back flip to land six feet closer. She moved with the strange predatory grace that had first attracted the military professionals to accept her into the academy. It was the same strange grace that her mother had named her for.
She wove in and out of a complex but well known dance that ended with loose and sore muscles and the lance she carried weighing much more than before. Grinning she retracted the blade and dropped down on the grass. She closed her eyes seemingly without apprehension.
“You havin’ a fun time standin’ there,” she inquired to the air. She had noticed the slim shadow of another amidst the trees though the sun would have blinded others from its movements she’d grown up in the desert. Sunlight never bothered her.
That style... It was metered, yet animalistic. There was a grace to it that would be unnatural - impossible? - for humans, yet this woman pulled it off. The woman seems to have incorporated a dance into it as well; maybe it acted as an anchor to humanity for whomever the practitioner of the prefatory style was. The hidden man was concerned about the staff's hidden blade. To create such a weapon, its structural integrity must be somewhat compromised. Though able to support her weight, the old soldier realizes it might not be too optimal for a defensive round.
Leaves and branches rustle when Kain jumps down from his post of observation into a kneeling position come landfall. Dark eyes trained on the lancer, he grins while clapping his hands at a slow tempo. "Impressive." The blonde dressed in blue casual clothes walks to within fifteen feet of the woman. "Both your skill with the polearm, and your skill of perception. How long have you known I was there?"
Upon closer inspection, the athlete bore a draconic tatoo instantly recognizable to the dragon warrior. Bahamut. This woman... Her fighting stance and movements were of a more terrestrial bent than his aerial, but he was sure that she must've had prior exposure to one his kind.
"Actually, a better question: who are you?"
Black Sun || Ashelia
Ashelia B’nargin Dalmasca of Suncrest Enterprises.
That was what was gilded on the letter of introduction the dragoon bore. It was sunny today. Light dripped over the paper, gold characters aglow to symbolize the radiance that even the name of Suncrest Enterprises’ scion was afforded. And this woman was to be his charge.
Kain must have looked quite the sight, using parkour to leap and bound into Aphrodite’s crevices and gaping cityscape while dressed in a black business suit recommended to him by the security agency. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line, after all. Scouted for his talent in mobility, the agency thought him a good guardian for the Lady Dalmasca living in the metropolis’ heart. Although touted as being effective in the defensive arts, it was decided a spear should accompany her shield.
Kain grabs onto an apartment’s fire escape ladder and swings himself onto the top rung of the ladder on the opposite building. Satisfied with his time, the dragoon advances to the top of this apartment complex’s roof at his leisure and enters the door on top with a key provided by the landlord, who had been alerted to the odd manner in which the bodyguard traveled. Kain straightens and tightens a black silk tie that had become slack during today’s exercise as he descended flights of stairs. Desired floor reached, the black suit enters the hallway, blonde hair enveloped in a light casing of expended energy and the scent of a bland cologne. His shoes were black Skechers instead of dress loafers, their heavy tread announcing his advance to Ashelia’s apartment. Then, a knock…
In light of recent events a new bodyguard was added to the roster to keep Suncrest Enterprise’s most vital asset alive and well. It didn’t come as a total shock for Ashelia when her father, Raminas, called her demanding to know the reasoning behind the pictures on the covers of the latest magazine. In one shot she was bruised and bandaged from her months old assualt from Shuyin and in another she was at a blitzball game with Balthier, the enemy.
She opted to tell him that those pictures were months old and give him the status update of her new life as an Aphroditian but his ensuing anger kept her from getting a word edge wise. It didn’t help that she told him as respectfully as possible that she had not filed any charges and was going out with him for lunch in a few days. She did not dare to add that she was slightly romantically involved with both men all while engaged.
She knew that thing she did would be reported back to her father, any misstep would be noted and she would be sent back to Dalmasca. Being the picture perfect hostess she was raised to be she set out lemon cakes and a pot of tea for the two of them to sit and discuss over. Just as she set the cakes and tea on the coffee table she heard a knock at the door. She brushed her black pencil skirt and smoothed her blouse before walking down the hallway to get the door. Her heeled shoes making indentations in the soft carpet. She opened the door to see her new shadow.
“Good afternoon, my father infromed me that you would be coming. Please come in.” She gestured for the man to come in and make himself comfortable. “Please make yourself comfortable.”
The older broad bodyguard-to-be nods his head to the smaller young woman before drawing the slightly frayed letter of introduction from his suit pocket. Though damaged, it still retained the gilded artwork that illustrated radiance. From the curt briefing he received about the woman, Kain thought it was morbidly appropriate. He hands it to Ashelia with both hands as servants of such high status people are wont to do. Purple irises bore into Ashelia’s as Kain speaks to her.
“I am honored for the reception, Lady Ashelia.” The fallen man gives her a low bow with an arm tucked against his sternum. “I am Kain Highwind, freelancer. In this letter from Suncrest Enterprises are my full credentials and recommendations, as well as the termination order waiting to be signed by you if you do not find my services adequate.”
The scion looked professional enough. Certainly not like the willful woe described to him by a perturbed parent. Kain felt somewhat guilty about tracking his work shoes on her carpet, and even more guilty for the line he was about to drop. “But I can assure you will not be needing to do that.” What also wasn’t needed was a shadow mouthing-off his hubris, but the first thing learned as an officer was that power must be displayed in first impressions. “As the letter states, I was commander of the dragoons of the kingdom of Baron. I know myself capable of protecting a little bird as she soars.”
The amethyst irises bore into her azure ones she felt intimidated and a level of fear in his presence. His appearance was a perfect mixture between professionalism and casual. Since this was a man her father possibly hand picked himself she was expecting a weak man who wore the sharpest suit to date. He pulled out a tattered piece of paper and she took it from his hands reading the Dalmascan script beneath that of the common language. A threat that if she got a bad report she would be cut off from funding and brought back to Dalmasca.
She heard the words that she could terminate if she did not find his services fit. She was prepared to relieve him of his duty immediately. She did not need another protecting her from any perceived danger when there truly wasn’t any to protect her from. “It is a pleasure to meet you Sir Kain, and you are very much welcomed. Anything for the man my father has assigned to protect me from harm.”
An unladylike scoff left her lips when she heard his boastful claims of not finding his skills inadequate. To her this was a challenge and her previous plans to immediately dismiss him faded from her mind. “You are a very bold man Sir Kain,” She seated herself in the nearest chair. Her next words were “I was going to relieve you of your duties and tell you that there was no need for you to come at all, and that my father was a fool to send you. Upon hearing your brazen remarks that you are capable of protecting this little bird than I shall consider my father’s decision.” She smoothed her skirt and her azure gaze was fixed upon him, “You are hired Kain Highwind. Your credentials are astounding, and Baron you say? I have met another from Baron his name is Cecil Harvey.”
Sir Kain. That's different. The dragoon's eyes closed at the utterance and a snide smile sneaks upon his face like a slithering serpent. "Spare me your compliment, Lady Ashelia. I am no knight." The mischievous grin stayed as he listened to the noblewoman's scoff. He steps closer to her but does not take a seat, instead letting his shadow fall upon the golden scion like dark wings. "A dragoon has to be bold. We are to reach for the heavens, after all."
He listened intently to her intended plan with a stolid look. "I see." said Kain said with an index finger pressed to the left side of his square chin. Piercing purples lock onto Ashelia's azures. He heard the incongruity in the noblewoman's speech as compared to before. First she seemed to speak with reverence to her father, but now she questions his judgement. "What a twist of feelings for your father's respect. It seems you are as flighty as a bird as well, my Lady, though I do thank you for your faith in me and would tip my lance as salute in your honor."
Ears ring with the sound of the white knight's name. Kain's broad shoulders slightly roll back as if he were slowing a jerking movement. His mouth becomes small. So he has met her as well? "You don't say?" Kain takes a seat opposite of the lady. Finding his long legs too big to comfortably lay in front of him as he sat in the low chair, he just leaves them spread. Hair of wheat covers a shoulder as Kain leans towards the noblewoman with chin on folded hands and elbows on his knees.
"He was my superior back in the war of our usurped kingdom. We fought together, in every sense of the word." For a few seconds, he shuts eyes in remembrance. Hands cover what would have been a toothy frown. "But enough chatter of the past." He sits up straight. "How do you wish me to shield you, my Lady? Shall I shadow you? Or, perhaps, set you up a cage?"
ooc // And so Kain is no longer going to be around at 22-23 GMT. I'll reply when I can.
I owe: Fang
These people owe me: Aqua, Seven, Cecil, Ashelia
Rosa: I may resume Zen in its current state, contrary to what we planned.
If anyone wishes to roleplay with Kain, message me for a starter. Themes I associate with him are penance, regret, disassociative identity, and the sky. I also make it a point to include the word "regret" in every thread at least once.

Friends Forever... || Cecil

A summer shower. The blue heavens dotted with white rain clouds shed tears atop the mount. An older man with a threatening dragon helm rests on bended knee. Locks of ripe grain flutter in strands reminiscent of watercolor strokes against the windswept easel of heaven. Light streams travel down the grooves of the helm’s temples down to the eye holes, appearing like the tears of the man. Summer-shower. Heaven-sea. Calm man, violent dragon. Plants and paint. False tears…maybe. The merging of things into unlike things.
What am I?
The man’s head hung below his shoulders, resting on folded hands resting on his other knee. Visions flooded his mind like the water drowning his helmet. Wings of red. A village alight. Dark armor. Wings of white. Soldiers falling. Friends. Beasts. A spear in the back. Dark spells. Towers. Fading sun. A blade of light between ribs encased in purples. Giants. The moon. Light. A wedding.
Who am I?
A search begun, with the ultimate prize being identity. Unlike his friend, the man had stayed a shadow. Not able to exist fully in either light or darkness. The crossed-bladed encounters with the friend and his brother proved that. Such a weakling. He must become strong enough to stand on his own, for that is when he will be able to stand side-by-side with his supposed equals.
What am I?
Years had passed since then. The man tried to weep silently in remembrance of old comrades; it was the least he could do. But he couldn’t; the heavens cried on his behalf. He thought of how the twins must be doing, now that they should be in college. He thought of the engineer and his enterprise. He thought of the old sage and his daughter-his daughter? What was her name again? Oh yes. Anna. He thought of the pattering feet of that delicate prince who played a harp of gold. He thought of the aging monk who must be running a school of his own. A school. Maybe I should do that. He thought of the prince of ninjas and his boyish love of the green summoner who grew-up too fast. Who am I?
Teeth are grit. Kain lifts his head just enough to see the line where the land meets the sky at a point named after a goddess of love.There.That would be the dragoon’s new home. Aphrodite. He would continue searching for himself with the aid of others in this new world. But, it’s been such a long time without meaningful contact. Kain cannot go to Aphrodite. Not until he has completed more training.
I am…
Kain shakes-off the tears of heaven and the musings of the past. There was someone behind him.
They must be wondering where he is by now. The guard captain of Aphrodite’s Lindblum Palace had left five days ago, on some sort of personal errand. His absence was expected, he had spoken to the proper officials to arrange for time away. However, he had arranged for only three days. Indeed, on the third day, he had prepared to return home, until he heard the roar.
From a distant wood he heard a roar. Not the roar of a beast, but of a man. A man who had nothing, or at least believed that was so. The roar was desperate, it was angry, and it was loud. Most of all however, it was familiar. Cecil knew that roar well, he had heard it on many occasions. He followed the roar into the woods, where he made camp for the night.
As he lay awake looking at the stars on the fourth night, his eyes resting on the bright full moon, he spotted something moving out of the corner of his eye. Following this figure, this quick moving, elusive black figure, his eyes settled on a mountain top, where he beheld what looked like a human being, but it was too far away to tell. This human was what seemed to be many meters in the air, and then suddenly, who or whatever it was sped downward, as if urged on by some force. As the figure disappeared beneath the tree line, a loud crash was heard, and sent a rumble across the air that Cecil could feel in his chest.
It was now the fifth night since he left Aphrodite. He had spent the day navigating the woods, to the base of the mountain. And then he climbed. He sought out that figure, he was sure it was a person, and he had a hunch that he knew who it was. So many years it had been since he left his home. Since he left his people. Since he left… Her.
But his thoughts were not on that now. As he stepped forward, the heavens seemed to cry, and heavy raindrops fell from dark clouds, weighing down his long white lochs. He was here. The man he had been tracking sat mere meters away on a rock. With each step he took, Cecil became more and more sure, and yet the first word he muttered was more a question than anything. He had to be sure. He had seen so much deception in his life, and the fact that he was here at all was starting to seem unbelievable even to him.
He stopped, steps away from the sulking man, who had seemed to be curled into himself as if to protect against the weather.
“… Kain…?”
The silent shadow stayed in his kneeling posture. Eyes still attached to the horizon line become jagged with shock before closing in an autumn-touched expression, dragon helm lowering forward. Calloused hands fold and unfold as Kain thinks of what to do, what to say. With a heavy breath expelled he rises up, face still turned to the city. He did not want to face the man he had shamed.
"Cecil."
His voice was coarse and reminded one of the crackling of a dying campfire. Kain had been fasting, progressively getting into longer periods abstaining from food as he had abstained from most pleasurable activities now. Self-denial would lead to enlightenment, they say, but Kain found it just made it even harder for him to be with others. All he had to calm his ravaged soul were the primal forces around his place of meditation. It was counter-intuitive; another mistake to chalk on the board.
"It has been a long time."
A hand is moved up to the helm. From Cecil's view it looked like the dragoon was adjusting his helmet for a better view of Aphrodite. Kain was actually wiping pinhead-sized tears from his eyes. Real tears. The rain was thinning - of course it would in the presence of the white knight - but the dragoon's dirty blonde locks were starting to stick to the back of his armor like the matted fur of an animal. Unshrouded rays of sunlight moved across the top of the mountain, first starting from Cecil's position, and then to Kain. The contrast of their armors matched the qualities held by both perfectly.
"Please, step beside me. It's a beautiful view." He tries to sound nonchalant about the reunion, but Kain's sadness was made clear in the delivery.

Changes || Open
Taking the time to get used to her surroundings was something she hadn’t done yet.
In a city much different than the one she’d grew up in, it was sort of interesting trying to get used to the different surroundings and places, though some were the same. Cities tended to all be the same in some sort of way, after all. This one was different though, it was peaceful and much less stressful than her home.
Stepping out onto the sidewalk, Seven had said goodbye to her friends and was ready to get going with her day. She wasn’t sure where it was going to take her, but she was pretty open to anything as far as seeing sights went. For the people she would maybe meet, that would be a different story depending on who they were. But only time would be able to tell.
Forward seemed the best place to go, looking both ways before crossing the street in front of her. It wasn’t too busy out at the moment and it was nice to be able to walk around without a crowd always getting in the way. That was also something that was sort of different from her old home; there were people moving around without fear. It was really nice to see considering she didn’t have to be so on edge all the time, but some things would never change.
Placing her hands in the pockets of her sweater, the silver haired girl continued to make her way. Whatever the day had to offer, she was ready for, though cautious as always. Changes in scenery meant changes within herself, and today the thought of it wasn’t so bad. Letting go was something she needed to work on, and that itself would take a while, so maybe this wandering around the city would do some good.
Maybe change isn’t so bad a thing after all…
A month had passed since Kain moved into the city of Aphrodite. Compared to the defensible fortress-cities he had lived in before, Aphrodite had more open areas and less hostile spires raking the heavens. More friendly to the sky. The dragoon appreciated the environment of his new home, but had not taken the time to interact with her citizens outside of his business. Clothed in the plain black suit of his bodyguard double life and wreathed with wheat worn more messily than would be barely noticeable, Kain jumped down from a perch he used to survey the horizon line.
There were rumors about a man in darks weaving across the industrial landscapes and occasionally apartment complexes of Aphrodite like some kind of superhero; little did they know it was just Highwind trying to capture that rush from his old days. Black work shoes thump on concrete streets in an alley and the man turns onto a sidewalk. An adjustment of the tie is made. The man may have been mistaken for a corporate CEO were it not for that hint of carelessness in his dress. Eyes scan the area in a pattern he cultivated to resemble random happenstance should his purple orbs lay on a given person for too long. So, these are the normal people.
No city for old men
ooc; —Hooray for FF4 fanservice! xD @Cecil-mun; That’s okay. ♥ You didn’t miss much to be honest! -Hugs.- Well… Except that your ladylove and your besfran have sucked face… Can you imagine the horror on Cecil’s face… I can, and it probably would be like this:
@Kain-mun; I agree. Particularly for Kain and Cecil since both will actually be vulnerable at this point and show a LOT more than the usual angst we see in the FF4 games. And yes for Cecil to join in at this point! Cecil if you’re seeing this, they’re outside Kain’s dojo and yes, Kain is practically half-nekky, head down on Rosa’s lap, whilst his students are training inside…
It would have been a more scandalous encounter if they were actually doing the deed after he’d dismissed the students, and boom, in comes Cecil. [Facepalms at the imagery!]
ooc: I'm against that last idea, actually. It is fine to cause jealousy in a love triangle, but I draw the line at netorare. That genre just leads to all sorts of bad feelings. Though I understand the appeal of its dramatic use, let's stay away from going down that path.
?!
Kain, where are your clothes? D8

i’m sorry did nobody notice this
"Oh, I get it! I'm cosplaying as Whyt since he's going as Edge."
"But that's still not cool."

Soft Winds || Kain
Eyes close. A smile. Dark gold locks bound in an uncomely ponytail hang loosely, swaying from side to side as the man shook his head slowly. “The jury is still out on that one.” His eyes open to reveal purple irises cast in a dim light as if in mourning. The man takes a seat on the other side of the book, keeping distance as always from the woman. “Some say the dragons were wiped-clean by an evil emperor who couldn’t endear the dragoons to his cause.” The smile disappears.
“Others say the dragons allowed themselves to die-out, with their last breaths exclaiming that we didn’t need them anymore. That…” The barest line of a small grin creeps upward on his rough jaw. “…they had faith that man can reach the heavens all on their own.” The burnt gold drapes over his back as the man rises to face the horizon line. “Wouldn’t that be something if that were the case?” The man’s head tilts downwards and the lines turn into curves. “They had faith in our mortal strength.”
He spins on a heel to face the university student. “My name’s Kain Highwind. I’m an instructor of the dragoon arts in Aphrodite.”
Aqua became more concerned as he told the tale. How could one person possibly do that. An abomination to those innocent, majestic creatures. The bluenette felt a deep pang of despair as he spoke.
When he spoke of the dragons as having hope in mankind to succeed in their belief, it have Aqua a small sense of happiness how creatures so sublime can be so beautiful. “That would definitely be something.” she muttered.
“My name’s Kain Highwind. I’m an instructor of the dragoon arts in Aphrodite.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Kain,” Aqua alleged, “My name is Aqua.” Seeing the place a couple of times she’s been around Aphrodite, she could describe the place as a lively establishment.
"It is nice to meet a studious one such as yourself, Aqua." Purple pools expand as the man's eyes relax. The man maintains his distance from the woman who had every right to be on the school grounds, unlike an invader such as himself. He takes a gander across the visible campus garden, eyes lingering on choice plants of the brightest hues. "This is a grand institution to attend." A smirk edges around, yet his eyes become dour. "I had aspirations to join a campus such as this, but unfortunately war and my father's prodding sought me for the battlefield." The blonde mane droops forward like a gold waterfall when Kain lowers his head, as if in regret. "But that was years ago. Please tell me, Aqua. How is Galbadia today? Is there still a strong martial tradition, as like a decade ago?"
What ancient god/goddess would I be? All pantheons allowed (Greek, Norse, Egyptian, etc.)

Kain grabs onto an apartment's fire escape ladder and swings himself onto the top rung of the ladder on the opposite building. Satisfied with his time, the dragoon advances to the top of this apartment complex's roof at his leisure and enters the door on top with a key provided by the landlord, who had been alerted to the odd manner in which the bodyguard traveled. Kain straightens and tightens a black silk tie that had become slack during today's exercise as he descended flights of stairs. Desired floor reached, the black suit enters the hallway, blonde hair enveloped in a light casing of expended energy and the scent of a bland cologne. His shoes were black Skechers instead of dress loafers, their heavy tread announcing his advance to Ashelia's apartment. Then, a knock...

As promised, I’ll be on at around this time everyday this week. If anyone wants to do a rapid response roleplay, I’ll be here.
I’m organizing a headcanon to match with Cecil-mun’s. The Cecil-muse with this community is 31, so if I were to follow the canon that says Kain is a year older, that would make Kain Highwind likely the oldest member here. I am afraid of the alienating effect that may pose for contact with the younger muses, but then again, it’s fun to play an “old man.”
I’m holding-off on replying to the Zen thread for dramatic reasons that will become clear to all in a little while.
Kain-muse is Batman.
ooc; — I believe I would have to join the bandwagon of sorts! My Rosa-muse in my headcanon states that she’s 20 years old (during the FFIV Interlude), but can vary depending on FFIV influence. So I suppose I’ll have to alter this and make her 30 or so, as she is a year younger than Cecil after all.
And no worries about the Zen thread! It’s leading to a particularly interesting plot and we need to drag Cecil in! <3
ooc:
well because of my long absence i have no idea what you guys are talking about yaay!
but it sounds cool
also, i will be gone for just a little bit but i will be back online in an hour or so, perhaps i a little longer. i would love to become involved with you guys, so just inbox me or somesuch when a decision is made!
ooc:
Alright then. Go 30 yr-olds!
Well, not like there will be that much of a change in our appearances. The FF Wiki image comparisons show very little difference in our DS and After Years forms.
I think it would be most dramatic and excellent if Cecil were to join the Zen thread at this point, because of Kain's relative vulnerability. It would make for a great contrast between Kain and Cecil to have one encounter the other when he's in shambles.
I realize, because of the fact that he is in Rosa's lap half-naked, there may be some trouble ahead.

Soft Winds || Kain
The much older man stole a glance at the book that now lay prone. A history student. Kain always remarked how important it was to learn from history, lest one dares to repeat it. Ironically, he does not follow his own advice.
“That,” he punctuates like a spear, “was a style taught to me by my father.” Eyes half-close when he remembers old man Ricard, and the conflict that trailed. “We were dragoons. Lancers mounted on dragons.” A rough exhalation sounds. “Until the last dragons perished. Now, we focus on training our own bodies in hopes of restoring the ability to touch the sky. But I suppose,” he points to her book, “that you already know about us?”
“Dragoons…” the bluenette muttered to herself. Her course hasn’t specifically entered that part of the book just yet, but she recognized the term from the syllabus. Knowing her, she checked what it was about. “Partially. My course hasn’t reached that section of the book yet,” she gave a nervous chuckle. “but it does sound fascinating.”
She inspected the dragoon again. Realizing how he learned the technique. Passing down generation by generation, this ideal way was possibly the way since the beginning. Another thought occurred to her. “No more? You mean all the dragons are gone? But how?” she asked with a concerned posture.
Eyes close. A smile. Dark gold locks bound in an uncomely ponytail hang loosely, swaying from side to side as the man shook his head slowly. "The jury is still out on that one." His eyes open to reveal purple irises cast in a dim light as if in mourning. The man takes a seat on the other side of the book, keeping distance as always from the woman. "Some say the dragons were wiped-clean by an evil emperor who couldn't endear the dragoons to his cause." The smile disappears.
"Others say the dragons allowed themselves to die-out, with their last breaths exclaiming that we didn't need them anymore. That..." The barest line of a small grin creeps upward on his rough jaw. "...they had faith that man can reach the heavens all on their own." The burnt gold drapes over his back as the man rises to face the horizon line. "Wouldn't that be something if that were the case?" The man's head tilts downwards and the lines turn into curves. "They had faith in our mortal strength."
He spins on a heel to face the university student. "My name's Kain Highwind. I'm an instructor of the dragoon arts in Aphrodite."
