Amazing work *O*
Reflection
Overall the semester has been very informative, and generally fun. At the beginning I was quite sceptical with the topic: Food. As we explored the relationship between food and design I came to realisation that in some way they do overlap. I thought this topic was very interesting especially all the case studies and unique unconventional designs Andy talked about during the lectures. The lectures really widen my knowledge of design.
The people in this course are truly inspiring and the works they produce are just as amazing. During the studio workshops, we get to work in groups, I’ve was able to improve my work by observing others and their work methods. It also helped me gain some social confidence as it forces me to talk with others, which was something I hope to improve on when entering university.
For the Studio Workshop, I decided to do a Bento festival. Due to the brief being quite vague, I was able to use illustration as the main concept of the branding design. Illustration is something I really enjoy and therefore this project has been a blast.
The Essential project was very intensive, however very helpful in teaching us the way the design industry works when dealing with a large brand. The classes also shows us that different roles requires different consideration and concern. For example, project management, proposal writing and process production all have different requirements. This was also my first time designing infographs that aim to convey a large amount of information. I struggle abit with this, however I think I as quite successful overall.
Studio 1 Comm Design 2017 | food event
Food as creativity, food as friendship
What I enjoyed:
Seeing a lot, A LOT of amazing work, skills, talents, and creativity
How everyone worked so closely with each other
How everyone has gotten so much closer since day one
Last but not least, Andy serving free ice cream :P
The event wasn’t anything big or fancy but think it was a really nice, cozy way to celebrate the end and the success we’ve achieved over the year. Cheers to Andy for being so understanding all the time! and to everyone else in this course: y’all just amazing :)
Comm design Core Studio 1 Our group got the task of branding the instagram page. We decided to stick with current RMIT branding that is currently out on bowen st walkthrough (for all the new strEAT shops) so it would streamline and be relevant to RMIT, and stay neutral to the group as a whole rather than somebodies indivdual idea. We created a display logo, aswell as a series of posts to insert between students work to help break it up in the feed! #rmitfoodfest

Week 13 Food Event
Some photos from the week 13 event.
Our class decided to take a more technological approach to our contribution. We set up a projector to display our poster designs on Instagram and a photobooth (it’s only just a chair with props, but it compliments with the chill atmosphere of the whole event) so that people can take photos with food props.
Above is a photo i took of my friend. Funny enough, the photobooth was located right next to a bin. We thought that posing with a bin where uneaten food is thrown away, would make an interesting photo especially since our theme for this semester is food. (and plus trash must be with trash)
Overall the the food event was quite successful. I get to see other classes’ work. I was pleasantly surprise by the quality of the work showcase at the event. There was free drinks and ice cream, which was really nice as the weather was quite warm.

Final Application
For our class, besides from a poster design, we were also required to create a second application. I decided to make some pricing stickers that will be used in the festival to show the cost of each dish.
I already talked about the illustration process in a previous post. for the colour scheme of the stickers I wanted to stay consistent with the poster and overall brand identity, therefore I stayed with the same orange and blue pallete. I also used the same drawing style as the poster, hence creating cohesion between the two applications.
I think there are some problems with this design because it might cause misunderstanding. The audience might think that the price is according to the dishes in the illustration, which is not. This task has taught me that next I need to be mindful of the way I design things, and that I have to me more user friendly.
Final Poster Design
My final poster design for studio 1. I have two versions of the poster to illustrate the unlimited variety of dishes that will be served and customised into your bento.
McDonald’s Pantone Project
Here’s my individual contribution to week 13′s event. We were required to post 3 images on our class’ Instagram account.
My Contribution to week 13
Above are Handheld props designed and illustrated by myself that will be used during the festival. It was very enjoyable creating and drawing imagery that could be used as props. It also allows me to practise drawing food which is something I struggle as an illustrator.
Our team worked well together. I believe we were quite successful in creating interesting props for the festival.
FINAL CARDS
Rather than a straightforward metamorphosis process, I decided that I wanted to make all the cards connect and have a smooth flow from one card to the other. The purpose of making it this way was so that I could document the whole process of whaling, and I found that this was more impactful in terms of the emotional impact it leaves on those who are viewing it. I wanted there to be a gradual change in the tone and mood from the first few cards as being very peaceful and harmonious to all the tragedy that happens towards the end.
Though I tried digitally drawing, I found that watercolour was still the best medium because I loved how I could control the opacity and transparency of the paint. Moreover, it also adds a very delicate and graceful effect which worked well for my topic.
To set the scene of my theme, the first few cards show whales swimming harmoniously together, where a monochromatic colour scheme was used to further create a sense of calmness. The mood and tone of my cards had a big turn on the fifth card where a whale was being captured by a whaling ship. The introduction of the bold colour red evoked tension within the piece and it was also very alarming. The choice of using the colour red was not only to symbolise danger but it was also a link to Japan.
The next imagery then shows a whale swimming towards a red dot, as though it is being captured by it. Again, this was to symbolise Japan’s involvement with whaling and their refusal to abide a 1986 moratorium set by the International Whaling Commission (IWC), an ‘oath’ different nations take to stop commercial whaling.
I chose to focus mostly on Japan’s infamous whaling habits mainly because there have been many who protest against it even their citizens. They claim that the small whaling fleet they sent out into the Antarctic Ocean to kill 333 minke whales were for a ‘scientific program’. Hence, on my fifth card, I have the words, ‘fake research’ written on the ship. To further emphasise my views and the views of many who are against it, I included protest signs in the seventh card.
After demonstrating the whole process of whales are caught and then killed, the last metamorphosis stage was to transform it into actual meat that people eat and serve at restaurants. The fancy plate of whale meat on the eleventh card was meant to show how a majestic creature from the sea is sold to become nothing but a food experience.
I chose to do very detailed illustrations of the whales and the whole process of whaling because I found that a realistic style gives more depth to these creatures and it definitely earns more sympathy because of that. The realism in these illustrations is confronting and could even be described as brutal, which was also what I hope to achieve because I want to impact those who are viewing it and create conversation through my imagery. Overall, I enjoyed making these cards because I found myself becoming more and more passionate about the topic after doing in depth research on it.
Love it so much Kristin! looks incredible!
Amaaaaaaazing job!!!! love it so much!!!

Food Culture Project
Drinking tea is a part of our life in my family, the tea bags were made by resin and glasses. It is showing the moment when tea leaves are put in boiling water, from dry to wet, from fold to unfold, from compressed to blooming, from clear to colored… Now, this moment is frozen in these tea bags, and that’s the reason I named it “Inside of tea”. The teaspoon is used as a handle here, the box is covered by a bamboo curtain splint, both of them are the representative of traditional tea culture in China.
I chose Chinese tea for my project topic, as tea has a long history in China, and my family is engaged in selling Chinese tea for many years so I get to know tea since I was young. We drink tea during many parts of the day such as at meals for good health or simply for pleasure. In other words, Chinese tea is meaningful for me and my family, Tea is very popular in China, particularly in the south of China.
I love the ideas. It is new experience for me

She used to play ripe 3D software but now she uses her architecture knowledge to create these geometric designs for the cake mould. I love her design! The cake looks like an art sculpture.
Week 12
Essentials: Production Process
Overall I thought that the Essential project was very intensive, however very valuable and beneficial in teaching us the way the design industry works when dealing with a large brand. The classes also shows us that different roles have different considerations and concerns. For example, project management, proposal writing and process production all have different requirements. I have gained basic knowledge on how a proposal is written and I’ve learnt how to budget and plan a timeframe for a design project. I think these skills will be very important for future design projects in the actual workplace.
I also really like how these essentials are laid out. I thought that by separating the final essential document into 3 parts with 4 weeks to work on each part allows us to steadily work on each section and actually get feedback from the teacher. There wasn’t much visual designing in these classes, which contrasts with other classes in this course. However I personally don’t mind it as it allows me to have a break from thinking about typography and illustration all the time.
Here’s the first draft of the infograph
However after getting feedback from otheres
they suggested that I should make the graph more linear to avoid any unwanted misunderstandings. Also they advised that putting all of the logos applications on one side will give it a more cohesive look, and that it'll give more ease in reading the info. I found discussing with my team mates very helpful as it allows me to receive feedback that I wouldn’t have noticed with my design.
