process pics for the sewing of @invizigothx's OFMD zine! Our most intensive zine assembly yet - ze did all the editing, promoting, and general hard work of being a fan to get this zine together with many other wonderful writers, then made a beautiful document with hir indesign skills and THEN took the time to make the cassettes after our poet/dj neighbor fixed some technical issues with them. also ze came up with the brilliant idea to wax seal the mailers.
on my side - the physical assembly represents a new style of binding for our zines. traditionally we've had to stay under about 48 pages for stapling, but the double pamphlet bind allowed us greater flexibility. It also meant we had to press the text blocks, then trim in a book guillotine after the sewing was completed to even the edges. what will we do when i don't work in the book lab? we'll figure it out.
this style of binding has been really fun! i know it's pretty simple, but i did have to learn it and get it right for the zines to open easily, plus make sure the cover edges could be used as bookmarks, which required spacing the folds correctly.
the next style i'd like to try, seeing the success of this one, is the dos-à-dos/tête-bêche for longer stand-alone fics. we'll keep you all posted.
