funny thing about anxiety is sometimes it kind of breaks your sense of danger. like i am known for repeatedly putting myself in situations that make my friends go "bro you couldve died. werent you scared?" and the answer is 👍 yjeah. i did it scared. i do everything scared. i didnt know that was the actual important kind of scary because i usually have to ignore my fears to function in society. it will happen again. watch out.

SORRY for being crazy (but also not) but i love how eurydice being portrayed by a black actress gives a completely new layer to chant reprise (Hang a chain around her throat / Made of many karat gold / Shackle her from wrist to wrist… Bind her…) in playing opposite to a white orpheus, who is being told by the white capitalist hades… the layering of both misogyny and racism. of owning another person so completely. the misogynoir on complete display. the way jack wolfe plays orpheus as wholly disgusted at hades’ words. it’s the prison industrial complex. it’s the music and language already directly influenced by african american culture; the vernacular, the jazz, swing, working class people living under the thumb of a white person who gets rich off their labour. the environmental racism. euridicye can’t remember the last time she saw a flower. hades is destroying her home, polluting the air, digging up the earth until he literally buries her inside of it.

don’t get me started on persephone also being black. that’s a whole other thing i could go into.

#y'know it's been 6 yrs since i got into the musical but i also noticed something while listening again #the railroad. it must be inspired by the the transcontinental union pacific. the one built in the 1800s #approximately ~90% of the workforce for that consisted of chinese immigrants and war refugees #having a black eurydice and persephone as well as having the workers be immigrants is like #the theme of race and immigration and exploitation is so potent no matter where you look #it is an undeniable facet of capitalism. and it also makes the unity aspect so much more moving #maybe the only way us folks of colour can change things is if we stand together 'as brothers in this life'#in the music and in the casting and in the writing...celebration and grief all in one #fuck man this musical is so good #hadestown
