Absence
My mom is good
at explaining my absence.
She's tired, she's had so much work.
Instead of a frank
although uncomfortable truth.
She died ten years ago
Waiting for a bus to hit her.
And it never did.
So she waits, waits, waits.
And, some days, she can pretend.
That she lives, that her deep breaths fill her lungs.
And nobody knows.
But I know.
And it hurts.
That I couldn't save her.
So I pretend.
That she's tired, she's had a lot of work!
And the words,
that she repeats
are as much for others sake
as it is for hers.
