I don't know if I ever actually wrote this down anywhere, but the idea I had about this ages ago was to treat the "Soul Horse" status kind of like a buff.
Specifically like the Cold Tolerant buff.
Because this, theoretically, is a working acknowledgement kind of mechanic in the game. The game recognizes when you enter Dino Valley and if the horse you are on is cold tolerant or not, and affects your gameplay accordingly.
The game also acknolwedges when you are of aren't on your Starter/Soul Horse when required in the quests.
So, theoretically, the "Soul Horse" could be changed to a status you can set to a different horse, like the Cold Tolerant buff, but manageable and transferable by the player.
And my suggestion for making sure SSO isn't entirely losing money or something similar is to still give players the standard Jorvik Warmblood defaulted as their Soul Horse. That way, they still have to play the game, they still have to purchase X horse they want to use as their Soul Horse, and, say, make the Soul Horse buff transfer cost a fee of Z Star Coins. Perhaps your first change is free, like the appearance change options, if they would like, and all further transfers require the fee.
In an ideal world, I would love a far more intricate character and starter horse customization with far more options - including "types" for your horse, so like, pony, warmblood, and draft builds, for example, but I realize that's a lot of work and SSO needs to make money to further improve and maybe one day get to a point that such a thing is a stable and sound option for them and the game, so I believe this would be a beautiful middle ground of sorts. It still uses assets they have already worked really hard on producing, still nets them profit, and helps satisfy a major desire of what I believe to be a fairly sizable amount of their playerbase.
I think it would add a lot to the experience and impact of the game to provide this option because it will improve the attachment and connection to the horse the player is meant to spend the most time with if its a horse the player really, really enjoys.
