So I decided to do something a bit fun and different to the usual appreciation weeks  to get us all together and show our love for this amazing show. Waterlily is giving off such strong Veronica Mars vibes that it’s honestly hard to believe the author wasn’t at least partly inspired by the show while writing it.

I mean, just look at some of the character parallels:

• Declan Romano is basically a more well-mannered Logan Echolls. Both are handsome, wealthy, arrogant blond guys with abusive parents. Even Riley and Declan’s push-and-pull dynamic feels like an obvious mirror to Veronica and Logan’s relationship.

• Fabian Reyes could not look more like Eli “Weevil” Navarro without running into copyright issues XD. Biker aesthetic? Check. Working in a repair shop? Check. Connected to a rougher crowd — PCH gang for one, bike-racing culture for the other? Check. Even the father-son dynamic feels strikingly similar.

• Lily (Fairchild) is… well, Lilly (Kane). Same fun, wild, stylish energy. Lilly dies by the Kane family pool, while Lily dies in the sea after a shady boat accident. Lilly Kane dates both Logan and Weevil, while Lily Fairchild dates Fabian (who, as I said, feels like a Weevil prototype). And then there’s the symbolism: Veronica and Lilly are seen floating in a lily-covered pool during hallucination scenes in the show, while Lily is obsessed with lilies and with Ophelia from Hamlet — another character associated with drowning.

And if all of that still hasn’t convinced you, Windrose Bay feels incredibly similar to Neptune: the same kind of coastal town divided by class tensions, where wealthy families drive up housing and living costs while poorer residents struggle to keep up. Add Riley Pierce playing detective in classic Veronica Mars fashion, and the similarities become even harder to ignore.

The book have only just started, but I’m already excited to spot more little nods and parallels. It’s making me ridiculously nostalgic — I loved Veronica Mars, and I’m loving Waterlily just as much already.

the benoit blanc movies show really beautifully how to write a queer character whose story is not centered around their queerness. it's shown that benoit blanc is gay married (to hugh grant!) it's shown that he participates in queer mediums like musical theater and fashion, but none of those things are ever explicitly remarked on. he doesn't have a big coming out scene because he doesn't need one; and the subtle details about him not speaking to his mother, the way he associates a church with homophobia, allows us to draw conclusions about how his family felt about his queerness without making that the sole conflict in his story. the conflict in benoit blanc's story is not that he exists in the world as a gay person, it's that he's always trying to wrangle a bunch of 30 somethings into not confessingle to crimes they didn't commit

It isn't just that Knives Out protagonists win by being kid and steadfast. They win by sticking to what it is they're good at. What they've been called to do, as thankless and as demeaning as those jobs can sometimes make them feel. They didn't play the "game" like Benoit did. They just did what they knew they were good at.

Marta wins because she was a nurse and a caregiver before anything else. She wins the inheritance because she gave Harlan companionship, not just medical care. She gets the truth out of Ransom because she acted as a nurse, trying to save Fran even though she still dies in the end. Had Harlan just fucking listened to the actual medical expert in the room instead of himself, he would have lived.

Helen wins because she's a third-grade teacher—her job is literally educating, caring for, and looking out for kids. Glass Onion isn't just the working class vs the wealthy, it's an actual functioning adult woman vs a bunch of adult-sized toddlers, whining and throwing temper tantrums and thinking only of themselves. She plays games with her third graders, and in the end she wins by making a game of destroying everything Miles ever held dear, even getting the others to side with her.

Jud wins because he's an actual fucking priest, who actually embodies everything his god taught. He doesn't try to poach Wick's "flock" or anything, nor does he allow himself to surrender to anger and vindictiveness in the way Wick did. Jud is absolved of all his crimes because he just wants to do good by his church, in the name of his god.

Just as Blanc is an excellent detective, so too are these three spectacular at their jobs.

Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig just keep reiterating the same points in every film and I do love them for it.

• Respect the working class

• Fucking respect women.

• Listen to the local queer person who is excellent at their jobs and you will go far.

• Be kind in a cynical world.

I just watched a video about students getting their papers falsely flagged for using AI, even when they didn’t, and the advice was things like, “Leave in incorrect grammar,” “If you’re quoting something, don’t copy and paste it, type it out manually because it leaves a metadata trail that you used the copy/paste function and that's a flag,” “Write in the cloud so there’s a version history,” and the one that really got me, “if you find you write in a manner that can sounds too robotic or professional and it gets flagged, go to the writing center so a writing tutor can help you sound more humanly flawed,” and like what the actual fuck.

Like I get that is practical advice, but people should not have to fucking do that. They should not have to train themselves around not sounding like AI, when AI only sounds like that BECAUSE it was trained on them.

I spent so much of my life learning how to write, I shouldn't have to unlearn that because some computer algorithm learned from me.
