About Assassination Classroom Characters - Irina Jelavic
Okay so just to preface this, from what I can find anywhere the character roll book profile hasnât been translated. Maybe Iâm wrong, but for the purposes of this post weâre featuring some potentially bad translations of my own (which Iâm not posting because, Bad, but I can get the gist enough to extract the information).Â
Irina is called âbitch senseiâ for reasons more than her surname. Sheâs a Bitch.Â
Sheâs selfish, immature, kind of an awful person on paper to be honest. Yet she has this kind of⊠loveable charm about her.Â
At first she had this super cruel and calculating exterior, she was this experienced assassin who was a serious threat. She just wanted to complete the job, she didnât care about who or what got in her.
That perception was shattered as time went on, and she was exposed as being actually kind of immature and lacking in social skills.Â
She can even be humble sometimes!Â
We see after her development arcs are pretty much over, she starts dressing more modestly. That implies that her promiscuity is at least partly an act she puts on for attention. Partly.Â
As a teacher, and being kind of close in age to the students anyway, she doesnât really have much of a concept of whatâs appropriate. (as someone whoâs literally the same age as her, yeah not okay, ew that itâs framed as a joke in some cases. I donât hate her as a character in general, though.)
This can all kind of be explained by her upbringing, where she had a total lack of shame.Â
Her backstory is genuinely one of the most tragic. There was some kind of Militant issue in her Serbian village, and she ended up, as a child, killing the man who murdered her parents. She was like 12, so ouch.
Before they were murdered, the home was very cheerful and carefree. Perhaps thatâs why Irina herself is kind of childish- wanting to cling to that.Â
Since Lovro - and lesser known character Olga - found her wandering around aimlessly, they decided to take her in and train her in both killing and seducing people. Yeah, that young. This is why I personally think some of the things she is⊠if not forgivable, theyâre at least explainable.Â
If she has other issues (such as PTSD etc.) due to this, I donât think theyâre really shown within ass class - but as an aside from the canon stuff it could be an interesting path to explore with her character. Matsui kind of said in the graduation album that the darkness from everything cleared after her year with 3E.Â
She can speak at least ten languages - including Serbian, Japanese, and English for absolute definite. I think Russian, French, Spanish would be a reasonable assumption as well, at the very least.Â
Some other things sheâs skilled in include cooking, eating etiquette, tea ceremony, motorbiking, playing the piano, and playing the harp. I assume thatâs just part of the list.Â
Her favourite student is Yada since she shows the most interest and skill when it comes to that kind of assassination.Â
Since Irina never got to be a teenager really, I always get the sense that she wants to be amongst the girls sometimes, getting to experience normal teenage gossip.Â
Tragic backstory aside, I assume with the knowledge and life experience she gains from 3E, she learns to claim back her career and thrive continuing to use those skills - more under her own terms.
She does at one point state that sheâs actually a Christian (not sure how serious she is about it though), which makes her the only character in the series to really express religious beliefs. I wonât count the few displays of Shintoism/Buddhism we might see (such as going to the summer festival) because⊠well without writing a religions essay about it the majority of Japanese people donât see it as âreligionâ in the same way western countries tend to. Given where sheâs from, Iâd make the assumption that sheâs likely Eastern Orthodox Christian.Â
She put a lot of value on outward appearances, earlier in canon, but she seems to have moved past that.Â
Though countless men have fallen in love with her, before Karasuma sheâd never experienced it herself, so sheâs kind of clueless actually.Â
Speaking of Karasuma, pretty much the only ship everyone actually agrees with, they really balance each other out. Though she didnât think much of him at first, her seduction games genuinely turned into real feelings. Even in seven years, sheâs never felt the need to change her personality for him.Â
All of 3E end up liking her, as some kind of weird big sister figure though, more than an actual teacher role.Â
In summary, the best thing I can say about Irina is sheâs A Lot. She does have a really great development journey though, and thereâs definitely a lot with her character that could be pushed and explored.Â
