Safety Tip | Line of Fire and Barricades
Barricades are temporary devices used when elimination of the hazard or “guarding” against it is not feasible, or not feasible at the time. Barricades can be effectively used to warn and prevent personnel entry into areas with hazardous spills or leaks, excavations, overhead lifts or work, and hazardous work areas. Some barricades are as follows:
Sawhorses equipped with flashing lights are effective for barricading roadways. Flashing lights are a must for effective warning at night.
Barricade tape is effective for preventing personnel access into an area. Use of barrier tape at night may not be effective unless used in a well-lit area or in combination with sawhorses equipped with flashing lights. YELLOW for “caution,” RED for “do not enter,” and YELLOW AND MAGENTA” for “radiation hazard.”
Asbestos, benzene, or lead-restricted areas must be signed and barricaded with tape warning of the hazard.
A few words on barricades for excavations: All excavations of any type will be barricaded to protect pedestrians and equipment/vehicles. All barricades will be set up prior to excavating and expanded as required to ensure worker Safety.
Excavations requiring wooden barricades are:
1. Any excavation scheduled to be open more than 36 hours; and/or
2. any excavation that cuts an accepted established sidewalk or aisle way. Wooden barricades will be constructed with a 2-in. by 4-in. top rail at 42 inches in height and a 1-in. by 4-in. mid-rail at 21 inches in height. Uprights constructed of 2-in. by 4-in. will be no farther than 8 feet apart.
Excavations requiring sawhorse-type barricades with flashing lights are any excavations cutting an accepted established roadway or temporary roadway where vehicles may travel. All other excavations may be barricaded with yellow barrier tape.

Happy Holidays from Swiftships
Swiftships Shipbuilders is an ISO 9001:2008 company with over 68 years of experience in the military and commercial shipbuilding market. Being a global business has a lot of benefits. One of the benefits of being a global business is that you able to engage with your clients on a different level than some smaller corporations or companies can. We get to know our clients on a more personal level; we understand their culture and values, and we share with each client our own heritage. Swiftships is like a big family and we treat our clients like family as well.
With the holiday season upon us we get into the holiday spirit by sharing our culture and holiday traditions with our team, our partners, and our clients. This year Swiftships hosted a Christmas party for its family; among us were clients from Iraq. We look forward to continuing business with our clients from the Middle East and we thank them for joining us this season as we get ready to kick off the New Year! Happy Holidays to all!
Happy Birthday to our December Birthdays! Gail Peterson, Allen Crochet, and Michael Fraley, may your day be as wonderful as you are!!!
