Marie Antoinette meets her new personal guard, Lady Oscar ベルサイユのばら | The Rose of Versailles
Mina, October 1
It is strange to me to be kept in the dark as I am to-day; after Jonathan’s full confidence for so many years, to see him manifestly avoid certain matters, and those the most vital of all. [...] They all agreed that it was best that I should not be drawn further into this awful work, and I acquiesced. But to think that he keeps anything from me! And now I am crying like a silly fool I must hide it from Jonathan [...] I shall put a bold face on, and if I do feel weepy, he shall never see it.
when the circumstances make them try to justify their choices (in this case not openly communicating due to suddenly restricting themselves to designated Victorian Gendered Spheres) and telling themselves it's for each other's sake and thus only making it worse till it all comes to a head

Couple in a Train Compartment , 1895 by Ricardo López Cabrera (Spanish, 1864-1950)
Note: this doesn't get revealed until October, but Jonathan Harker's hair is described as "dark brown". Presumably his eyes are also brown.
laura’s companion
Today's Daily Dracula is another example of how I think a lot of the film adaptations have failed to capture the true horror of Dracula because this scene is SO upsetting. It is quiet and cruel in such a beautiful way.
Harker believes he has successfully squirreled out a few letters to a camp of travelers who will post them for him.
Then our man the Count comes in with the letters and is so expertly and subtly impressing upon Harker just how fucked he is, just how little power Harker has. This, as though past moments haven't been, is the time at which I would lose ALL hope.
Stoker ends the chapter with another banger line:
"Despair has its own calms."
gay people's insistance to Keep Carmilla Faithful and Condemn Her Evil Crimes while swimming through approximately 40000 novels, films, tv shows, animation, comic books, musicals, and plays about Deep Complex Lovestruck Wifeguy Dracula needs to be studied
I mean, I feel like a lot of this is coming from straight people on both sides. I've only seen those few bloggers being obnoxious about Carmilla, in terms of queer people taking that specific stance on the book, and far more straight creators insisting that they have to be "loyal to text" when adapting the story. In a way that fewer straight creators seem to feel compelled to do with Dracula
Although now I am kind of curious to do some sort of study on adaptations of both movies by straight versus queer creators and see what the differences are. Because the few Carmilla adaptations I know about by queer creators are actually the small handful that do change the story to give it a happy ending between the main couple- but I don't know for sure about things like the moth diaries, the vampire lovers, etc. in terms of whether anybody LGBT was involved

Agnus Dei
I actually do think we should discourage women from becoming housewives. Do not become financially dependent on a man. That's how a lot of women ended up dead over the years. A man gets violent suddenly and you have to choose between homelessness or potentially dying at his hand because you have an enormous gap in your resume and no degrees or certifications or anything that will help you pursue a career that will allow you to be financially independent. He owns your bank account. His name is probably the one on the car. Try and leave and he can report it stolen. Where will you go then?
Don't become a housewife.
a little more of this crossover
Genuine question
In most Dracula book fanart, Mina is represented as black. And of course I’m not a fucking fascist idiot and this is no problem to me plus I think it looks cool, but I’ve been genuinely wondering if I missed something in the book ? Or is there just a general reason why she is represented like that in art ?
You didn't miss anything, in the book Mina's forehead is described as white or as white as snow multiple times. But fanartists can take liberties.
everyone needs to go read family of the vourdalak right now
