2020 is not a good year to be a fan of That 70’s Show I stg. First, the actor, D*nny M*sterson, of one of our favorite characters, Hyde, turns out to be a r*pist. Now we can’t even watch the show anymore because Netflix removed it. I hate it here 💔

I feel like out of all of them, Hyde was actually the most patient with Fez. He definitely had a deeper friendship with Eric, probably was closer with Donna and he loved Jackie in a different way. But he didn't seem to get annoyed with Fez much like he did with the others and was maybe the nicest to him in the beginning. I think we should give him more credit for that since he really helped him out (and Fez said he was his role model)

In seasons 1 and 2, Hyde takes Fez “under his wing” to help him navigate life in Wisconsin (and American) teen culture. Even without the flashback in “Class Picture” (4x20) where Hyde pledges Fez his protection, that pledge is evident.

Hyde generally, though not always, treats Fez as a person, not defined by the F in Fez’s name (i.e. foreign); unlike Kelso and Jackie, who variously point out and use Fez’s “foreignness” to their advantage and/or as a weapon against.

Though once (that I can remember), Hyde, too, takes advantage of Fez’s naivety / lack of knowledge due to his not being born and raised in America. In “Eric Gets Suspended” (2x09). Hyde and Fez go on a blind double-date, and the following exchange happens when they first see their dates.

HYDE: Oh, they’re hot! The blonde is blond ... and hot! FEZ: Yes, and since I set us up on this date, she’s mine, right? HYDE: Well, I can see why you’d think that; but actually, since I came along to help you out, American custom dictates that I get the blonde. FEZ: Once again, the local custom bones the foreign guy. HYDE: America man! Love it or leave it.

Also, in “Jackie Says Cheese” (4x13), Hyde enjoys burning Fez about how the new foreign exchange student, Thomas, is succeeding with women where Fez fails. In the end, though, Hyde shows his solidarity to Fez by joining in his scheme to rid himself of Thomas by stranding him in Michigan.

Except for those examples,Hyde is shown to be a good friend to Fez during seasons 1-5. In season 6, though, the focus in writing switches from characterization to jokes. All the characters suffer because of it and act in conflict to previously and concretely established characterization. In Christmas (6x07), for instance, Hyde sets Fez up to get attacked by Point Place High jocks. This stands in sharp contrast to Hyde’s offer of protection to Fez in “Class Picture”.

Hyde: Look man, if those jocks try to do this to you again, just come find me.

It also contrasts with Hyde (and Eric) avenging Fez after Fort Anderson students attack Fez for his loyalty to the Point Place High Vikings.

In “Substitute” (6x19), Hyde expresses his annoyance at Fez’s wish for a more intimate friendship.

FEZ: [Kelso and Mitch] look happy. Why don't we have a game? HYDE: Would you stop asking me why don't we have stuff? "Why don't we have a song?" "Why don't we have a movie?" We're men. FEZ: I thought we were sensitive men. HYDE: We're not. FEZ: One of us is. HYDE: Shut up! FEZ: And it's not you.

This was written more for the joke than characterization, but it characterizes both Hyde and Fez nonetheless.

Regardless, Hyde’s respect toward Fez is the most consistent and the most evident among all their friends throughout the series. The depiction of their friendship wanes as Fez’s friendship with Kelso ascends, but Kelso and Fez’s friendship need a meta of its own to analyze.

Does anyone remember when we were nearing the end of season 7? Our expectations and hopes so close to being fulfilled? Fez and Kelso were living together. Let me repeat that. LIVING TOGETHER. Alluding that there could’ve been some future tension leading to Felso. Donna and Eric were going to finally get their lives together and find their career paths whilst trying to stay together. Lastly, Jackie and Hyde were going to get FREAKING ENGAGED. It never escapes my mind what could have been. I will say it once, and I will say it a million times. WE. WERE. ROBBED.

as I’ve been rewatching t7s I’ve just been staring at Hyde constantly. Like, whenever he’s in frame. Here are some cute things I’ve noticed him doing in the background of scenes:

Him being handed the pitcher of OJ from Mrs. Forman one breakfast and pouring her a glass before pouring himself one

Him twirling his hair between his fingers while watching TV with the Formans

Him guiding Jackie onto his lap whenever she goes to sit on it

Him giving her ass a little slap as he guides her down

Him and jackie giving eachother quick little kisses in the background, her reaching up and grabbing his nose after one and him scrunching up his face and batting her hand away

Him and Jackie always sitting and talking, both of them looking genuinely interested in what the other is saying

Him sitting and holding jackie’s wrist and looking at her fingers

Him reaching over and putting his hand on her leg when they’re sitting on separate furniture
