He’d notice your smile and quickly bend down to steal a kiss from you. “A snowflake had landed onto your face! I simply wanted to remove it,” he’d claim. It wasn’t even snowing – not that you’d complain…

Animal traces were perfectly visible in the freshly fallen snow. Aragorn could study tracks anywhere, anytime, no matter the weather or season. But today, the two of you simply strolled around the fields, talking about all the different kinds of footprints left in the snow. Aragorn would lean over to show you another track he has spotted, almost touching your cold cheek. It would take you a while to actually look at the snow instead of his soft eyes ♡

Despite the sunny skies, Boromir would constantly check with you to see if you were cold. He had offered you his red coat right when you had met, and he would pull it around your shoulders during the break the two of you took on a lonely rock. “Ghastly cold, isn’t it?” he’d ask, sniffing, his cheeks all rosy as he’d grin at you. “Your fingers must be freezing. Those gloves aren’t meant for wintertime, you know? May I?” With that, he’d offer to take your hands in his to warm them.

You knew that Hobbits could dance just about anywhere – but Frodo inviting you for a dance in the midst of the falling snow would still surprise you. After all, he is not only barefoot but also on his way to the market with you. Still, he’d take his time to romanticise the season with you. At first, he’d pull you in for an energetic jig, making you laugh so hard that your breath would crystallise in the fresh winter air. But soon, the two of you would simply hug and sway as snow silently fell around you ♡

Powder snow like this brings out great joy in Gandalf, almost like a child. On your winter walks with him, he’d use his staff to absentmindedly draw lines and symbols into the snow as he’d listen to you, or as he’d hum a winter travelling song from long ago. Gandalf also knows a few spells to surprise you, of course – like conjuring a gust of wind that makes the snow fly up and glitter, forming shapes, a snow rabbit here, a dragon there – not unlike his fireworks!

At your little bonfire, Gimli would curse under his breath when snow started falling. “We could be in front of a festive fireplace in the mines, with a banquet and music – but no…!” He’d pull his coat firmer around himself and grumble a bit as snowflakes landed in his red hair. At first, he’d decline your offer to shuffle closer and cuddle for warmth, but soon, the grumpy Dwarf finds the cosiness in sitting so close to you.

In his childhood, Merry had once won a snow sculpture contest, a memory that he cherished a lot. That is why your offer to build things out of snow conjured the brightest smile into his face. At first, he’d be a bit fussy about your technique and unsolicitedly teach you the right way to work this special building material. But after a while, fun won the upper hand, and the two of you would build snowmen and castles like champions!

Scarf already in his hands, Pippin would be all excited after waking up to the first snow. He’d hurry you outside and entangle you in a snowball fight that somehow got bigger than he anticipated – the Shire is a small place, after all. Good thing Pippin’s little sledge can get you out of trouble fast, at least downhill! By midday, the two of you would be so exhausted that you’d spend the rest of the day dozing in the kitchen with some hot chocolates and berries: “Best day ever!” as Pippin would say ♡

Taking huge steps through the snow, Sam would go on and on about how much he dislikes it. “It looks kind of pretty, but that’s it, in my humble opinion. Suffocates everything below, y’know, like a heavy blanket. Nothin’ grows. And it gets everywhere, and then we’ll have to dry our clothes for the rest of the day. But I’ll make us a nice pot of tea, and we can eat the rest of the biscuits – and sit by the fire and look outside. Snow is always prettier to look at from a warm chair inside. What? What’re smiling at me for?”

✧ Rohan’s winters tend to be long and ruthless. Its people have learned long ago to stand their ground against both darkness and ice. As Rohan’s heir apparent, Éomer values the traditions of his people and will introduce you to them as a matter of course, not only because they help to keep you warm.
✧ That said – this man knows how to keep you warm if he ever sees you freezing. Expect dozens of blankets and furs either brought to you by your maid or Éomer himself, depending on how helpless you looked with your mug of mulled wine in your shivering hands. Icy wind is cutting your cheeks, but they warm up immediately at the sight of Éomer arriving with yet another blanket to wrap around your shoulders.
✧ Imagine Éomer’s watchful eyes on you before he checks in on you during a horseback ride: “With gloves this thin you are sure to freeze your fingers. May I?” He’d ride close to you to take your hands in his, with his eyes now suddenly strangely avoidant. His touch is as rugged as his skin is rough, but you cannot deny there is a certain tenderness to it…
✧ Some of the Rohirrim’s customs to fight off evil winter spirits may seem primitive, but you find their rawness honest and charming. “Charming? Or superstition for dotards and children?” Éomer asks before giving you a look with a wondrous glint. Or is it the bonfire reflecting in his eyes? “It is the way of these lands. Better not to anger the spirits,” you say and earn an amused smile in return.
✧ The days grow excruciatingly short. When Midwinter is finally here, the Rohirrim begin celebrations quietly by lighting lots of small fires and candles. Lady Éowyn sings lullabies that help put the darkness to sleep. It does not escape your attention how moved Éomer is by all this. Standing this close to him, you can hear his deep breaths. You are delighted to find him returning to his mellow and attentive nature during the subsequent banquet!
✧ “This,” Éomer says to you with great pride, “is the best mulled wine you will find in all of Middle-Earth.” He hands you a mug with one of the many variants of horse heads as handles and tells you everything, from the spices to the correct way of toasting. “It is important to not break eye contact,” he’d tell you, his green eyes so firm on you already that your knees weaken ♡
✧ Chuckling and talking over a steaming mug of mulled wine is all fine and cosy, but one time Éomer seems to have underestimated the heat of the pottery. You fail to hide your amusement at him burning himself and cursing quietly to himself. He will have his revenge by way of snowball fighting you, be it in blue daylight or under a starry night sky, laughing so hard that his breath crystallises in big puffs of air.
✧ Hot baths are in high demand this time of year. Much to your horror, you accidentally walk in on Rohan’s heir apparent rising from the waters of the bath house, long hair wet against his broad shoulders and arms. You swallow and turn around on your heels, eyes closed as you flee from the smell of rustic oils and coals. As a soldier, Éomer thinks nothing of other people seeing him naked. But he does carry himself differently around you after this incident.
✧ Éomer will personally make sure to keep the fireplace in your chambers burning at all times. He’d knock at your door late at night with a new batch of wood just to check on you – and maybe you could invite him inside?
✧ Needless to say that there are many, many other ways of keeping warm beyond hot beverages and furs around the fireplace… Éomer is eager to show you all of them ♡

It’s freezing where I live – we’ve already had our first snow! This and playing a LotR wargame with Éomer as my champion yesterday inspired me to write some winter headcanons. Remember to take care of yourself during this cold and dark season, even if it only means sitting down with a cup of tea to rewind for a few minutes. That’s what I did today!

That said, he knows it’s not like that for everybody, and he does anticipate your embarrassment and profuse apologies once you accidentally walk in on him changing clothes. He’d gently and unexcitedly assure you everything was fine – and was perhaps a bit confused by himself. Is he blushing? Why is he so preoccupied by this? Maybe this is different when it’s with you…

Many soldiers are used to seeing other people naked and being seen naked themselves, and Boromir is no exception. Still, he wouldn’t be entirely comfortable with you walking in on him changing. A nervous laugh would escape him, though he’d instinctively try to play his ‘prince charming’ routine. Probably even successfully! That said, he knows this could very well be a delicate matter to you – and your comfort is always Boromir’s top priority, so he’d handle the incident according to your wishes.

He’d worry and quickly walk up to you to apologise. He would accept your apology too, though he would still blush and quietly ask you to knock next time. Also: He knows how the Shirefolk can behave sometimes and wants to shield you from gossip.

Pippin let out a cry when you accidentally walked in on him changing clothes, making you turn on your heels – before remembering you’ve seen him naked plenty of times. There’s no big scandal, even though he acts like there was. Going forward, as a joke, he would play with his scarf and smirk at you like the dirtiest thing happened between the two of you. You try to keep it down, but eventually, Pip would go around telling people you keep walking in on him on purpose.

Sam would be just as surprised and embarrassed as you are. He’d stumble over his words and his feet alike, trying to get distance between the two of you and cover his naked skin at the same time. Afterwards, you apologise to him profusely, but Sam knows very well you didn’t mean to intrude. “‘t was an accident. Nothin’ more and nothing less.” Still, he’d blush a little – and, just sometimes, wonder if you perhaps liked what you saw – after all, he’s too shy to ask ♡
