so uh what are the Takes out there on how nie huaisang felt about lan xichen, was he being kind or cruel by not giving lxc a definitive answer, did he blame him for what happened to nmj, was the way he ended up taking out jgy sheer opportunism or was there a part of him that... idk, relished is too strong a word but perhaps appreciated the fact that lxc was the one to do the deed? was it another act of revenge? punishment? complete coincidence? when nhs went running to jgy all those years for help, did he enjoy.... well, wasting lxc’s time too? when he finds out lxc went into seclusion, does he regret what he had to do? or is there a part of him that can’t help but think.... serves you right?
headcanon. ( sasuke )
because i’m a psych nerd and just finished a book about trauma, you’re getting an indepth nerd analysis---
Okay, so when remembering the first half of the show - when they were all genin - I feel like some of the scenes reflecting what happened to Sasuke and family were really nice subtle hints about how he processed - or didn’t process - his trauma and the way he carries it with him.
Sasuke “copes” with his trauma through dissociation. He focuses on his school work and ends up at the top of his class, and he isn’t a problem child so the adults/teachers in the village don’t see a need to really focus on him. While the adults all know what happened to him, Sasuke’s behavior keeps him under the radar and he doesn’t draw attention to himself. And he’s also just talented at the academy. Earning high marks and praise from his peers and teachers.
Because he tries so hard to ignore the feelings he has surrounding that day.
He stores it away in himself in hopes that he’ll never have to directly confront it until he’s able to finally fight Itachi. Notice how he never talks about it during the series. Only when he shouts at Naruto during the valley of the end about how he didn’t know what it’s like to loose his family. He tries to ignore it the best he can and puts on a show of acting aloof and calm.
But then we get the ‘dream’ scene with Sasuke and his younger self while he’s recovering from receiving the curse mark. He’s face to face with his younger self, the self that had to endure all that trauma, who talks about how his family would still be alive if he wasn’t so ‘weak’. Which tells us how he views the child version of himself that went through this horrific event-- that that version of him was ‘weak’, and deserved all the pain that he was put through. I feel like a part of him has no sympathy for his younger self, because he truly believes that he should of done something. ( Even though he was only a kid and couldn’t of. ) And this is common in trauma victims-- initially looking back at themselves with unkindness and even disgust.
Trauma flashbacks are different than just ‘bad memories’ because the body and brain believes that you are reliving that trauma in real time whenever you are triggered into a flashback. And I strongly believe that the little fight between Itachi and Sasuke - in part one of Naruto - is a metaphor for this. Itachi puts his brother in a genjutsu that lasts 72 hours, and Sasuke is forced to watch his family being massacred over and over again, as if it’s literally being done over and over again. His mind doesn’t know the difference-- just like the traumatized mind during a flashback.
which feeds into my general beef for how people just ignore the way itachi treated sasuke and forgive him because he still ‘loves’ him but i digress--
While in Team Seven with Sakura and Naruto, Sasuke was genuinely starting to heal. And I think feeling himself being treated well was also a huge factor in his arbutly pulling away, aside from being triggered from Orochimaru and Itachi. He didn’t know what to do with these new healthy relationships that he acquired, and it scared him because the pain was all he knew-- not this new happiness. ( Which is also common in trauma victims, especially those coming from abuse. And idc what you say, what Itachi did to him was a b u s e. )
