Kim Manners probably just thought of a Psycho homage and 'fun' montage but dare I say they are starting early in microaggressing Dean around his performativity. Not only is Dean shown enjoying taking care of his body - which outside of physical exercise sadly has mostly feminine connotations in Western society - he is also established in a sort of sameness to the other women in these shots. In previous episodes we see Dean trying hard to conform to hegemonic masculinity, the epitome of it visible in his absent father, being that kind of Han Solo hero saving - and getting - the woman in the end (like in Wendigo and Dead in the Water). Though as early as in episode 3 we also see him taking care/opening up and get a view behind the facade. I think it's funny that this is the most honest portrayal of Dean that we have seen so far - makeup washed away, symbolically speaking, but also subject to his father and his brother and the gaze of the audience.

i find it endlessly hilarious in bugs when dean goes. well sam. you could’ve picked up the phone and called us. like did you or did you not tell him to leave and never come back. because I feel like that would pretty severely impact whether or not someone decides to be the first to reach out.
