During the visit to the cultural center that hosts in its different ships an extensive program around cinema, the performing arts, design, music, the world of books and the visual arts, Felipe and Letizia have remembered the musician Pau Donés and actress Rosa María Sardá, recently deceased. In the meeting with professionals from the world of creation and culture were the actor Juan Echanove; the bailaora and choreographer María Pagés; the writer Javier Sierra; the magician Jorge Blas; the musician Ara Malikian; the actress María Adánez; music producer Carlos Jean; the muralist Mister Piro; the fashion designer Ulises Mérida; the director of the National Dance Company, Joaquín de Luz; the director of the National Ballet of Spain, Rubén Olmo, and the director of the Spanish Theater, Natalia Menéndez, among others.
Created in 2006 and located in the old slaughterhouse and cattle market of the city, it is an enclosure of great heritage and architectural value, with enormous personality and a benchmark in the city.
Don Felipe and Doña Letizia, accompanied by the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso; the Minister of Culture and Sports, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes; the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida; the delegate of the Culture, Tourism and Sport Area of the Madrid City Council, Andrea Levy and the CEO of Madrid Destino, Fernando Benzo, have toured the different buildings that make up the cultural space.
The visit has started at the Cineteca, a 2,668 m² space dedicated to contemporary audiovisual creation, paying special attention to non-fiction film programming. It has three projection rooms and several multipurpose spaces, conceived as a place of education, encounter and thought aimed at all audiences. Gonzalo de Pedro, artistic director of Cineteca Madrid, has been in charge of presenting the project to Their Majesties and they have held a meeting with two teachers and a student from the municipal cinema school "Dentro Cine", aimed at disadvantaged young people Social.
Then, the Kings have visited Intermediae, a space dedicated to artistic practices and cultural mediation. This space coexists with the Madrid Design Center and AVAM Extension - Associated Visual Artists. Rosa Ferré, artistic director of Matadero Madrid, explained to Don Felipe and Doña Letizia the organization of the cultural center in front of the model of the complex.
At the Casa del Lector, an international center for research, development and innovation in reading, dependent on the Germán Sánchez-Ruipérez Foundation, SS.MM. The Kings have toured the reading rooms according to the explanations of the director of the Foundation, Luis González.
The next stop on the visit has been Nave 16.1, a space that houses temporary exhibitions, where the Kings have visited the current assembly "Urban Fables". An exhibition in which architects and artists present in the form of twelve "fables" what cities could become.
Once abroad, and during the tour, the delegate of the Culture, Tourism and Sport Area of the Madrid City Council explained to the Kings the project for the renovation of Nave 15. This ship is an important reference for the world of creators and for the culture of Madrid, so its reopening will mean a great event. The intervention of Langarita & Navarro Arquitectos, of a fully experimental nature, is an architectural work of great interest, which has been the subject of several awards and recognitions.
After many years closed, Nave 15 will host, for the distribution of the interior spaces and for sustainability, the Center of Artistic Residences (residences of plastic arts, audiovisuals, writing, animation, digital culture, with special expansion of the musical residences) currently in Nave 16. In this way, Nave 16 would be free for other uses such as large-scale exhibitions and other formats that require open spaces. The ship's re-piloting works are currently being carried out and later works will be necessary to transform a provisional installation project into a definitive one.
The visit has concluded in the Naves del Español, a theater space dependent on the Spanish Theater, conceived for the production and exhibition of performing arts, made up of ships 10, 11 and 12 linked together. There, in the Fernando Arrabal room of nave 11, SS.MM. The Kings have held a meeting with representatives of the world of culture.
The confinement prevented the cast theater from returning to the center, in the Naves del Español, under the direction of Natalia Menéndez. However, during this time they have made a great effort to offer online programming in order to stimulate the centre's social networks.
With the start of the next theatrical season, the center will recover the theater in its warehouses, thus making it possible for many citizens to identify with this nerve center of Madrid's culture. Likewise, its most avant-garde facet will be promoted by the Madrid City Council.
The Matadero Madrid Contemporary Creation Center is promoted by the Madrid City Council's Culture, Tourism and Sports Area in collaboration with other public and private entities.
