Ever wondered how people learn racism? Watch Jane Elliott’s Blue eyes/ Brown eyes Experiment

Jane Elliott taught this experiment after the assassination of Martin Luther King to teach her class what it feels like to be discriminated against. Watch the WHOLE video.

To summarise:

Jane Elliot split the class into brown eyed people and blue eyed people. In the first stage the brown eyed students were told they were inferior to blue eyed people. The class were told blue eyed people were smarter, cleaner and better than brown eyed people. Students with blue eyes were also given extra recess time, were allowed seconds at lunch and could use the drinking fountain. Students with brown eyes had to stay in the classroom while the kids with blue eyes went out to recess, were not allowed to use the drinking fountain and were frequently told by the teacher they weren’t as good or smart as kids with blue eyes. On the next day she switched the class so brown eyed kids were told they were better than blue eyed kids. The same thing happened in both stages. 

 5:06 two boys talk about why they fought at recess. The blue eyed kid started calling the brown eyed kid names “Brown eyes”.

Notice not just how blue eyed kids turned on brown eyed kids, but how the brown eyed kids felt because they believed they were more stupid and less than for having brown eyes. They actually performed worse on class assignments than the blue eyed kids because of this. 

These results happened after ONE DAY of discrimination. This is what white people have been doing to black people for CENTURIES.  This is what black kids, black woman and men, workers, elders have been made to feel like for centuries. This is how white people are still killing black people in 2020. 

As white people, we need to stop assuming people are not racist in 2020. Actively teach your kids what racism is, why racist jokes are not appropriate, how to be a supportive allies. If we don’t, actively teach racism out of our system, it’s only going to continue.
