🍓 ⇢ how did you get into writing fanfiction? 

picture it, if you will. a farmhouse in the early 80s. a young girl is obsessed with The A-Team. she loves it when a plan comes together. wouldn't it be great, she thinks, to write a story about the A-Team outwitting the feds once again? and so she does. why she does it in crayon on her bedroom wall, however? we'll never know.

🕯️ ⇢ on a scale from 1 to 10, how much do you enjoy editing? why is that?

11. 15. 27. i love it so much. the writing is in the editing, man. writing is rewriting. i can't post WIP because i need a multi-draft process to be satisfied with a work of any substantive length. and i get off on it. this makes me so happy. it also makes me want to walk into traffic, but in a good way?

i don't do it often anymore but on LJ i used to write to strict word counts, usually with a prompt or two provided by my flist. by this i mean i'd have 10 people give me 2 words apiece and then construct the finished work as ten 200-word segments which also had to contain the prompt words. writing like that is almost entirely editing. it's an intellectual and creative challenge. like that really is what editing is about, or at least editing yourself is.

sidenote: if you can develop the skill of writing to tight word counts while expressing ideas in both clear and interesting ways, i guarantee you there's a nonprofit who needs a grant writer and they will be thrilled to turn your yaoi-honed abilities toward not going broke.

my first car was a plymouth horizon hatchback. i think it was an 83? you could open the doors fine from the inside but from the outside it was just the drivers side door and you had to know just where to kick it while you lifted the handle for the latch to pop.

i left that car unlocked all over new york city. sometimes i’d come back to it and the handle would be stuck up like someone tried and failed. i don’t know why nobody ever broke a window, but probably they figured there wasn’t anything of value in a car with no working doors

15) What's a piece of advice you find yourself giving a lot?

you can’t break it.

this is something i say a dozen times a week, usually talking to FIP who’re nervous about technology and are coming to me bc they think they have or they’re going to irreversibly fuck something up. i’m always like, yo unless you like actively put a power drill through the middle of that tablet? there’s no honest mistake that you can make that cannot be fixed.

that’s the superficial layer.

our society is all about perpetual punishment. our society believes that you CAN break things beyond repair, and we are all acculturated to not just believe that about ourselves but to FEAR the day, the moment, when we make a mistake and become irredeemable. and that’s bullshit.

it’s never too late in life. you can’t break it. you might change it, you might make a mess, you might drop a ball, or ten, but at the end of the day? if you’re still breathing then it ain’t broken. there’s still time.

16) what's a piece of advice you would give to yourself five years ago?

don’t buy a kia

Yay! Glad to know I’m not alone in feeling this way about past museum exhibits. Also, I feel like archival images don’t really give a good idea about the way in which space, sound, lighting is used to create atmosphere and can either bolster or hinder the show’s sense of feeling. And for me, that really matters in my appreciation of whatever it is I am looking at. Plus, with online/book resources you can’t get a feel for what others think about the exhibit- you can see their reactions to certain works of art or text or history- and that’s just as much a part of the experience as the actual exhibit we are looking at. It’s all very telling. So, now if you’ll excuse me, I guess now I’m just having all the art/museum feels.
