Words: starless, buried, secretly, garden
Probaby the biggest mistake I ever made was the night when I got buried alive.
I was a new adult, only 20 years old, and I was taking walk along a quiet garden on a starless night. It was cold and I shivered the entire walk, but I knew that if I didn't make it to my destination, the secret that I promise to hold inside would come fumbling from my gaping mouth.
I shivered against the cold, rubbing my arms to try to warm up, when I bumped into a figure. Someone... large and strong. Slowly, I looked up to his eyes to find that it was my ex-boyfriend.
The very man I was trying to escape, the very man I was secretly still in love with and that I'd hoped to be long dead and gone before I ever saw again.
He gazed into my eyes, noticing the goosebumps on my arms and his brows immediately furrowed. Removing his jacket, he immediately draped it upon my shoulders but I just... couldn't accept it. I couldn't or else the secret would be simply impossible to keep.
However, he didn't seem to care. He draped the jacket over my shoulders and walked away.
But before he could leave, I snatched his hand and held it tight. I saw his entire body tense with emotion. I didn't even have to see his eyes to know they'd filled with tears.
See, I dumped him a couple weeks prior, claiming that I had no feelings for him, never had. That I had been stringing him along for the pleasure of my friends making fun of him in bed. I told him such terrible, awful things... but none of it was true. I just told him what I knew would push him away.
He quickly snatched his hand back from mine and rubbed it with the other as if I had injured him... perhaps I had. His pride, anyway.
I stared at the back of his neck, biting my lip. I struggled not to spill the beans but-
"I still love you." Clapping my hands to my mouth, I immediately regretted it.
But no sooner had the words come out than a large blue figure came out of the ground, appearing as if an apparition in the night. Tears filled my eyes.
"Please," I whispered. "Please don't do this. I can't be without him." The figure shook his head disapprovingly.
"You won't have to," he said, causing my ex to turn to face us finally. His eyes bugged from their sockets as he watched me get dragged away.
See, the secret was that I loved him. The figure that had appeared had told me if I didn't break up with him and never admit to loving him again, he would bury me alive.
And now here I am, taking my final breath. I know this was what caused my end, but... tell him.... tell him I lo-
A light. A glorious, bright light blinds me as the ground opens up from over my body. I see a familiar silhouette, shielding off part of the moon that blinds me. It's him. It's my lover.
"Why didn't you tell me?" He murmurs, voice soft but disappointed in me. I can't help the tears springing to my eyes.
"I wanted to... I wanted to so bad but you saw what the result was." He frowns as he pulls me out of my hole and holds me close, his body wracking with tears.
"I love you too. Never break my heart like that again," he whispers against his own tears.
