This is my second ranger subclass, but this time I tried to make something more in line with the new style of ranger subclasses presented in Xanathar's Guide to Everything. This subclass is designed around slaying dragons: while it was inspired by tales from folklore of heroic dragonslayers. its features are designed around overcoming the features that dragons possess in D&D. It's therefore a mix of both fairy-tale fantasy and practical combat utility, giving you features that should be useful in most fights but ESPECIALLY useful in fights against dragons.
With this subclass, I'm also trying out a new style of picture editing which I've seen a lot of other homebrewers using. I'm really impressed with it and how much it makes the image look like part of the page, so I think I'll stick with it. If you like this subclass and want a high quality PDF version of it as well as of everything else I’ve made (or just want to support me), please consider pledging to my patreon.
v2: The chosen damage type for Elemental Adaptation can now be changed on a short rest, Slaying Strike deals additional damage and is more effective against dragons, Dragonslayer Dodge now halves the damage of subsequent attacks instead of giving them disadvantage.
Well version 1 was quite popular, but it wasn’t quite what as balanced as I would like it to have been. I wanted it to be different from the Draconic Bloodline, but it took some extra thought to figure out where to put everything. In the end, I think it came out well.
Changelog:
-Unarmored Defense became a secondary level 14 trait rather than a level 1 trait. It now is 10+Dex+Int to make it slightly less overpowered in theory. You can still, of course, get to 20 AC without armor (and higher, if you have a few levels in Bladesinger).
-Added additional spell lists for dragons not yet seen in 5e but have appeared in the past.
*Pops out from working on campaign setting to post these before hiding back into my hole of holy shit there’s a lot of spells*
You ever want your players to attempt to beat Tiamat up but don’t want to go full force on them?
Like the ideas of aspects walking the planet, watching? Don’t want to bring out her avatar?
Then have five lovely ladies who definitely are not here to kick your ass.
We’ve got hot lady, stinky lady, chilly lady, boney lady, and sparky lady here.
Alright in all seriousness, when fighting gods I always say go for aspects over avatars, as they are far more likely to find an aspect (weaker, but more powerful than an average adventurer and still humanoid) than an avatar (platinum dragons, five headed dragon, etc). Especially as aspects tend to regenerate faster than an avatar, and don’t weaken the god if killed (more likely annoy them).
As such, I made a statblock for Red first, then tweaked the others as needed. White is carrying a +2 longsword, and I tried to match weapons to the appearance of the dragons but I don’t think I quite nailed it. Oh well.
I personally imagine these to be tieflings in appearance and dragging around a 6th brown tiefling woman who seems to just follow them around but has a poisonous bite.
If you like my work, maybe reblog and share these? Or you could donate to my patreon or ko-fi, if you want! They’re linked on my page under ‘Support’ due to Tumblr being finicky with links again.
Guardian Dragon Wyrmling (or Gamma) achieved!
Guardian Dragons are a specific dragon species created as warriors and guardians of the gods of Altera (my current campaign’s setting). In fact, Ryott, God of the Arcane and Trickery claims that a fully grown one could best even them, if they weren’t so loyal to the gods that made them.
I used a Young Red Dragon as base, however I feel like the CR is a bit off. It will likely be edited in the future to reflect changes as I get better at creating monsters but mhhhhhm it’s nice to have an actual statblock for em. I’d suggest replacing Kro (which I don’t have the statblock up for) for Blood Hawks or something similar, as long as it’s small or tiny and can fly.
Biology under the cut.
