A year ago today, I posted the first chapter of my first 9-1-1 fic. I’m so grateful for all the friends and readers I’ve met since then! My first buddie fic has officially become my second most read fanfiction of all time (and I’ve been posting since 2013!)!

I realized I never shared a link to the entire fic on tumblr, so here it is — the s3 rewrite that started it all:

When the Universe Screams

It's been almost a year since Abby left — six months since Buck stopped waiting — and Buck is doing...fine. He has a new best friend, and his new best friend's adorable kid, and work, well, he's getting there on that one.

And then a tsunami hits on the same morning a baby with blue eyes and red hair arrives at the 118. Addressed to Buck. And really, who else is he going to learn to be a father from than one of the best parents he knows?

It’s late when Buck gets a phone call.

He’s in his loft, staring at the ceiling as he lies on his bed, not wanting to doomscroll, but also not ready to go to bed yet either.

He’s not sure if he’s made the right choice. He doesn’t know anything anymore. He thought he could… he thought he could trust Bobby. Out of anyone, Bobby’s been the only person to ever fucking show up for him and now?

Bobby doesn’t want him back. Bobby’s the reason Buck can’t go back to work.

Buck fights back the tears that spring to his eyes yet again, and releases a sigh of frustration instead.

He doesn’t understand this. He doesn’t understand how Bobby could hurt him like this. He knows they don’t always agree on things. He knows Bobby doesn’t love how reckless he can be. But this—this is beyond that, right? This is Bobby saying he can’t come home. They all get to go to work and be together, and Buck is stuck at home. Why doesn’t Bobby want him there with them?

He hates this. He’s never felt so fucking alone in his life.

It’s—it’s fine. He has a really good lawyer. Bobby obviously doesn’t seem to know how much this job means to him and Buck is just going to have to show him.

The phone rings and Buck rolls over, unsure of who’d be calling him. He’s almost expecting it to be his lawyer but he doubts he works this late into the evening. He sent the rest of the team a mass text about the lawsuit yesterday and hasn’t heard anything since the initial response. He doesn’t want to think about the other option left and so he looks at his phone before he can question anything else.

Captain Pops

When he sees the contact name, all of his emotions become so much bigger.

Of course, it’s him.

Buck stares at the phone with frustrated tears in his eyes.

He doesn’t want to talk to Bobby. He doesn’t want to be reminded of just how bad things are. Ignoring the fact that they shouldn’t even be talking legally, he’s so fucking hurt and angry that he can’t picture anything good coming from this conversation.

But at the same time—

Buck also fucking misses Bobby.

He misses what they had before and a small, foolish part of him hopes that they can get it again. He also wants to know why. Buck doesn’t understand where Bobby’s coming from and as scared he is of hearing it, he desperately wants to know.

Buck answers the call one ring before it goes to voicemail. “Bobby?”

“Hi, is this Buck?” A voice that is decidedly not Bobby’s answers, and Buck immediately sits up in bed, a bad feeling stirring in his stomach.

“Uh, yes. May I ask who this is?” Buck’s heart starts to pound and the feeling of wrong, wrong, wrong builds.

“I’m uhm,” the person stumbles over their words and this time Buck can hear distant voices in the background. “I don’t know how to tell you this, but I uh. Your dad got shot.”

The world slams to a halt.

Bobby got shot. Bobby got shot. Bobby got shot.

Buck’s hands shake as he grips the phone, bringing it closer to his ear. “Excuse me?”

“He’s in the ambulance now. I was the one who found him, and of course I called 911, but after I saw that his phone was open to this contact and it seemed like he was trying to call you and I know this is really weird and maybe an invasion of privacy, but—” They take a breath, their rambling having become faster and faster. “I just thought you deserved to know. I can’t imagine what this would be like, but I know I would’ve liked to be told right away.”

Buck—

Buck doesn’t know what to fucking think right now, but he knows he needs to tell Athena and— “Where…which hospital are they taking him to?”

“I think I heard them say Presbyterian. Look, the cops have arrived now and I’m sure they’re going to want to give my statement but I just, I thought you should know.” Sure enough, Buck can hear the sound of sirens get louder in the background.

“Thanks,” Buck says, and hangs up and really hopes this person doesn’t steal Bobby’s phone.

He stares at where the screen has now gone black.
