Work Wife: The story of a platonic male-female team whose professional success, personal friendship and ability to share deodorant makes their lives work. Set in the world of real estate, Dani and Scott have taken the leap to start their own team. Now feeling the stress of being the boss, they have to rely on the yin-yang of their dynamic more than ever to keep their professional and personal lives afloat.

Topher Grace (That ‘70s Show) as Tom, the middle sibling and middle-class, but definitely not middle-brow. He’s an intellectual, a novelist who’s had a couple books that sold decently, but his last one did not. He strives to be where his brother is financially, but fears he’ll slip down to his sister’s level. He’s in a creative field so his income fluctuates. That wasn’t such a concern when he was starting out but now he’s plagued by financial anxiety after having twins. Grace’s casting lifted the casting contingency and got this pilot the green light. Quintessa Swindell (Trinkets) as Lennon, who is creative, rebellious and endlessly indulged by her mother. Lennon rarely heard the word “no” growing up. Raised to believe she could do anything, Lennon never worried about fitting into any conventional box. She found music early, and it became the primary outlet for her self-expression. When her city life is upended, Lennon struggles to adjust to her new circumstances. The casting of Swindell (who is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns) in the role lifted the contingency and the pilot was officially ordered. (Feb 20)

Last pilot season, CW had “Glamorous” with a young non-binary lead character (played by queer actor Ben J. Pierce), although that pilot was not picked up to series. Also on the CW, “Batwoman” starring genderfluid lead Ruby Rose did go to series (although her character Kate Kane seems to identify as a cis lesbian so far). On FOX, midseason entry “Deputy,” stars non-binary actor Bex-Taylor Klaus in the nonbinary role of Bishop. Before that, non-binary actor Asia Kate Dillon was nominated for Critics’ Choice TV Awards for their role as Taylor Mason (the first non-binary main character on North American television) in Showtime’s “Billions” since 2017. This casting is a significant potential first for the ABC network.
