Alpha Mack/Beta Will is just sitting there in my head. Taunting me to do something about it.
Like, Will is insecure about being a beta and having a massive fucking crush on the alpha and he cannot do anything about it because he's a beta, and alphas are meant to be with an omega. They're pairs - bond partners, and Will doesn't fit into that equation.
So he just stews in it and tries to repress his wants and desires. But constantly being with Mack, rooming with Mack on roadies, playing with Mack on the ice, laughing and yapping, giggling and wrestling - it's all with Mack and Will just wants it too badly. To be the closest person to him, to have everything about him, to be the only one that truly knows him.
And then Mack is in rut.
Will isn't that good at detecting scents, he just gets faint hits of it, not enough to make out distinct aromas or emotions. But when he walks into Macks room - unaware of the rut happening because Will never experienced an alpha in rut or an omega in heat. He knows about them sure, Leno went through ruts but Will was never around and he always told him.
But he finally smells Mack - and Mack is everywhere. His scent is so concentrated in the room, it's impossible not to. The scent of salt off the ocean, the unique smell of fir and cedar and hemlock trees, something hotter, musky masking it all, but also something sweet woven between it, like fresh honey or sap. Something so uniquely Mack, it's insane.
It's not overly strong - just enough that it smells like someone over used cologne, but it's making Will's brain go foggy and his mouth water. And Will thought, if he was an omega - he'd be gone and begging for Mack to take him and use him, to bite him and claim him.
A pain runs through Will at the thought, and it sobers him enough to see Mack curled up on his bed, sheets tossed all around, shirt soaked through with sweat, toes curled, and a hand down his shorts.
Mack hasn't even noticed Will standing in the doorway, watching the alpha fist himself through his shorts, frantic strokes up and down. Mack's breathing hard, gasps broken up by grunts and moans. And Will swallows and wonders can I do something for him.
To Will, Mack looks like he's in pain. Face flushed red and sweating, collapsed on the bed and moaning. Curled up on himself, head nearly buried in his pillow.
"Mack." He walks towards him and crouches at the edge of the bed. He watches as Mack locks up, hand barely stopping but stroking slowly. His eyes snap open and they meet Wills. His pupils large and black, the beautiful green Will loves so much is just a thin ring. His mouth is open and Will can see his fangs.
Will wonders, not for the first time, what they would feel like against him, against his neck. Against the spot where a scent gland would be if he was an omega. Someone built and made perfectly for Mack. Yet Will lacks all that - he's flawed, missing pieces he can't have.
"Will, what-" Mack leans up and groans, his body hitting the bed again, but his eyes stay on Will. Something needy and greedy showing on his face. Or maybe that's just what Will wants to see.
"Can, can I help?" The words are out before he can stop to think. And then he panics at Macks stunned look. "I mean, like, I've never seen someone, anyone, in rut before. I just, is there anything I can get you? Do you need anything? Do you-"
He doesn't get a chance to finish.
Mack is already grabbing at him, pulling all six-foot even, 180 pounds of hockey player into his bed. Pinning Will beneath him, and - and Mack is kissing him.
The kiss isn't gentle, it's hard and sloppy, messy. Needy. Spit is everywhere, running down Will's chin and by his cheeks. But that doesn't matter to him, because Macks tongue is in his mouth and it's claiming every part of him. Will let's out a moan that Mack swallows, and Mack let's out a sound that could be a growl.
"Fuck, Will." Mack breaks for air and then he's grinding against Will and he can feel how hard Mack is. The grinds are slow against Wills own erection and he has to bite his lip to stop a groan.
Mack watches the action and reaches out with a thumb to pull it out. He licks his lips and lets his eyes roam over the beta.
"So beautiful." He says above a whisper and Will thinks his heart might explode.
"Can I, Will please," Will doesn't know what Macks asking but soon enough he's snaking a hand down Wills body and thumbing the edge of his shorts, the rough skin of his burning Wills hip where Mack touches.
It doesn't take much convincing after that. Will nods and Macks already ripping his own clothes off before nearly tearing Will out of his. He thinks he hears the shirt ripping and that just turns him on more.
Mack's hand is wrapped around them both, he's trusting into his tight fist, rubbing against Will. His eyes are trained on Wills, Macks not even blinking.
They're back to kissing a moment later and Will can feel Macks hand passing over the head of his cock, stimulating him just right that Wills about to come. He lets out a moan as Mack breaks the kiss to trail soft peaks down his neck to his collarbone.
And then Mack is sucking at his neck, hard and wet, his teeth grazing the sensitive skin and Will feels himself melt. If Will's brain wasn't so far gone, he'd notice that that's where a scent gland would be.
Will can't take it anymore and he's coming moaning Macks name over and over, and Mack's fangs are digging into his skin, then Mack's coming, and he's saying Wills name. And it's all just too much.
Will feels the pain in his neck and he hopes the Macks mark bruises and scars, a rememberance of this day and moment for him and everyone to see.
Things calm down a little after that, Mack collapsing on to Will, his full weight knocking the air out of him. And then he's licking and sucking fondly at Will's skin, making little, needy noises.
Will's raises a hand to run fingers through Mack's hair and another up and down his back. And Mack let's a sound out and his cock is still hard and leaking against Will's stomachs.
"Will, Will," Macks been quietly panting his name between sucks and kisses along his neck. "Can I..."
He trails off, the kisses getting softer and then stopping. Mack's breathing into his neck and mutters something, his words slurred.
"Yea, Celly? What was that?" Will pulls gently at his hair but Mack doesn't move, just nuzzles closer.
"Want you stay here, with me." He says into Wills ear and then nips at it. "Wanna be inside you, want to make you mine."
Will has to be dreaming, this can't be real.
And yet he wakes up the next day, Mack draped over and breathing slowly, head buried in Wills neck, arm tossed around his waist. Will can feel something sticky and thick between his legs, Macks hard cock pressed between his cheeks.
Will smiles to himself and the first time, he lets himself believe he can actually be with Mack. That Mack wants him back as much as he wants him.
Mack’s leaning against Wills chest, cuddled up the couch. Wills arms wrapped loosely around him. A red and white Canada blanket (much to Wills dismay) covering them. Wills breathing lightly, his breath ghosting Mack’s neck as he napped. It's warm, comfortable and smelled heavily of them. Well, heavily of Mack. And most of all? Will smelled like him, and Mack’s alpha was sated - but he always wants more.
Mack’s alpha was growing more and more needy about Will. He wanted to keep Will by him at all times. Watch him, protect him, hold him, make him feel safe, wanted, and loved.
It made Mack anxious when Will wasn't around. He was a beta, scentless and, well, normal. Mack didn't have any issues finding Will when he wanted - his radar was so keyed into Wills presence and every move. But it still made him feel... off.
They were at a crowded bar last night, celebrating a win against the Rangers, and Will was next to him the entire time.
That was until Will whispered he was going to the bathroom.
Mack’s alpha instinctively wanted to follow him, keep him in eyesight, close enough to touch and pull towards him when needed. But Mack reigned himself in. He didn't need to be clingy with Will, no matter how hard he wanted. Will always came back to him.
Always.
And then 5 minutes turned into 10 which turned into 20 and Mack was vibrating. His leg bounced uncontrollably under the table, hand fiddling with his phone, fingers drumming on the table. He was glancing around, trying to find his own scent but kept coming up blank. He could only smell himself, mixed into the other other scents of alphas and omegas crowding the place. There was an extreme overlap of fake omega perfumes that made him nauseous.
Wills gone, he wasn't returning Mack’s texts, he couldn't see him. He couldn't fucking find him.
Mack’s alpha was restless. He wanted to growl and scream, charge and push through the throng of people to find his... Mack’s brain stuttered, he couldn't finish the thought, and it made him sick. Ashamed of himself.
"I'm gonna go piss," he told Misa beside him, who was too busy staring at Dickie with heart eyes and a blush that wasn't just the alcohol. One day the omega would ask the alpha out. But they still danced around each other, and Mack kinda liked watching their relationship play out.
Mack pushed away from the table and started toward the bathroom, his nose keyed into his own scent. He still couldn't smell Will.
Mack even made sure to scent him heavily before going, and Will just muttered and complained softly while he did it. 'You don't have to, Mack' 'I won't walk too far away, I'll be with you the entire time'.
His face was unreadable yet his smile didn't reach his eyes. He didn't have a scent and Mack didn't know exactly what he was feeling. He wanted to ask but just, he couldn't. He trusted Will, trusted that he would tell Mack anything. He could ask for the moon and Mack would give it to him. He could ask Mack to bite and mark him, and he wouldn't even hesitate. He loved his... his...
The thought made his human half hum with excitement, while his alpha felt off, almost uncertain. Like he had a puzzle piece that almost fit but didn't slot together with him perfectly.
Mack opened the bathroom and it was empty. His heart stuttered and his mind started to race.
Will, will, will, will, will, will.
Where was Will. Why wasn’t Will back yet. Why didn’t Mack just fucking follow him and just listen to Will complain about it. Why didn’t he realize his own scenting was gone.
He didn't realize, because Will smelled exactly like him. So Mack couldn't tell where he started and Will ended. They were mashed together, wrapped in salt, and fir trees, and fresh sap.
Mack turned on his heel and pushed the guy behind him aside, ignoring whatever useless comment the stranger made. He was pushing through the crowd now, eyes scanning, looking, trying to find Will.
Then he saw a mop of blond curls glinting colorful in the rainbow lights that danced around the bar. And he started to settle down. He finally found him, his -
And he came to a complete stop.
Will was talking, smiling with some, some fucking girl. He was leaned against the wall, cheeks flushed red from the beers he drank.
The girl smelled sickeningly sweet, like cupcakes and croissants, something buttery and warm. Mack wanted to hate her instantly, but his alpha paused and froze up. Conflicted. His eyes darted back and forth between the omega and his beta.
A horrible thought flashed through his mind.
Her on his bed and begging, Will moaning underneath him, the omega crying to be knotted, Will holding him afterwards - running caring, warm hands down his back. His alpha curled up and sleepy inside, feeling fuzzy and warm because of him.
Mack hadn’t been with an omega in a long time, and his alpha was being fucking stupid about this entire thing.
And Mack? He felt bile rise in his throat and he was gonna be sick. He hated himself at that exact moment and wanted to claw the alpha out of him. Toss it aside, and why couldn't he have been a beta. Then they'd be normal and Will wouldn't have to be nervous around him. Mack wouldn't have to worry about Will like this, he wouldn't need to scent him every fucking day. He wouldn’t need to make Will wear his clothes, just so he could smell like him.
But he needed all of it. He loved doing it, he wanted to keep doing it. He wanted to see Will smile and roll his eyes when Mack took his shirt away and shoved his own at him. Staring at him till he put it on. How Will kissed him this morning and everything was perfect and-
"Will, I wanna leave. Come on." Mack didn't realize he was already grabbing at Will's wrist and yanking him away from the wall, not bothering to even acknowledge the omega and her startled 'what'.
Mack knew his grip was hard, his knuckles white around Wills wrist as he pulled him through the crowd and out the front door. The cold air hit him and Mack was relieved as all the scents of the bar vanished and washed away.
But his nose still twisted up in disgust.
"Mack, what the fuck was that?" Will was bitching behind him, but Mack stopped caring for a moment. He turned and brought will closer to him taking his hand and pressed Wills wrist to his scent gland.
He kept doing it, rubbing himself slowly up Wills bare skin, pushing the jacket up, while Will let out a startled noise but kept talking, kept complaining.
"Just, shut up for a fucking minute." Mack told him before shucking his jacket off and handing it to Will. Expecting him to know exactly what Mack wanted.
And Will let out an angry sigh, his eyes weren't kind when he stared at Mack. Something burned behind those ocean blues and Mack didn’t care enough right now to read into it. He knew he was being rude, an ass. A possessive alpha hockey player dragging his beta around and making him smell like him, again.
Will still didn't put the jacket on.
"Will, put it on." Mack forced a command into his voice and he could vaguely see someone flinch in his peripheral.
Will was un-phased, breathing out his mouth and just staring at him.
Mack cursed under his breath and he shoved the jacket against Wills chest, hard enough to push him back an inch. Commands never worked on Will, and Mack knew it. He tried a few times, and it always made him feel like shit for trying to force Will to do something. But it also pissed him off for not working.
"Will, please just put it on. I'm, please." Mack didn't want to beg, his alpha felt pathetic and he wanted to whine or growl. Do something to make Will just do what he wanted. To keep Will as his.
But is this what Will wants?
Will let out another sigh and the tension in his shoulders started to lessen. He removed his jacket and handed it off to Mack as he took his own. Putting it on slowly, staring at Mack with that unreadable expression whenever something like this happened.
The smell of the disgusting cupcakes and sugar was less now, and Will smelled more like him. It calmed Mack down. He was going to burn Wills jacket when they got home.
"Can we go home?" Mack was quiet and he felt his face fall, eyes hot.
"Fine." Wills voice was flat and hard, but he turned in the direction of the parking lot.
The night was tense after that. Mack tossed Wills jacket as far back in the Bronco as he could. And Will just gave him an exasperated look, but Mack refused to answer it.
They drove back in silence, and Mack knew his scent was sharp and burned at the edges. Charred wood and scorched sap, the harsh smell of dead kelp on the Pacific’s sand.
But will didn't flinch at it. And Mack wanted to believe that was okay. That he could just let his scent out and cover everything and Will, without needing to control it like he had to around everyone else.
The front door slammed shut behind Will and they still didn't speak. Mack walked toward their bed room - technically it was Wills, but Mack moved himself in weeks ago. Cloths shoved in Wills dresser, blankets on the couch, pillows on the bed, shoes on the rack by the door. His car was parked on the street but he doesn't remember the last time he drove it.
He started to get undressed, stripping down, tossing clothes and underwear into the hamper, grabbing for some loss shorts and a baggy t-shirt - Wills of course. He turned and saw Will standing in the door way, leaning against the wood.
"Do you want to tell me what that was. Or are we just not going to talk about it, Mack." Will was mad, but he was calmer now. And so was Mack. Shame ran through him and Mack wanted growl, why couldn't Will just understand what he wanted.
He opened and then closed his mouth, turning his head away and sulking toward the bed. He pulled the covers off and sat against the headboard, legs crossed. Will always slept on the left side - farthest from the door, while Mack slept on the right. Mack felt like he protected Will like this, it was the same song and dance they did on roadies.
Mack sat there looking down at his hands as he fiddled his fingers together, his knee bobbing slightly, bottom lip pulled between his teeth. The night was catching up to him, and he made Will mad at him. Guilt and something sick chewed at his stomach.
A few moments later, Will was changed and sitting down next to him. Boxers and one of Mack’s black shirts on. His alpha approved it.
Mack knocked himself against Wills side and laid his head on his shoulder. He felt pathetic. Mack just couldn't let Will out of his sight and he hated it. Seeing Will talk to that omega girl, it makes him feel insecure - if that is what will really wanted. He couldn't tell.
Maybe he was a shit alpha, a bad partner.
Maybe an even worse boyfriend.
"Celly," Will wrapped an arm around his waist, hand slipping up under his shirt and rub at his side. "Promise I won't get mad."
Mack let out a heavy sigh, "it's hard for me to say. I just, you didn't respond to my texts and I couldn't find you. I was worried." His voice became quiet towards the end, how can he explain to Will that he felt alone and was afraid of what he saw.
"Jus' wanted you next to me." Mack turned his face into Wills side and breathed in the subtle scent of Wills sweat, mixed with Mack’s own scent through the threads of his shirt. It was comforting.
Will kept running his hand up and down and Mack was afraid to look up at him. Wills body vibrated as he hummed as he turned to kiss the top of Macks head.
"Sorry," he spoke into Mack's hair. "I didn't mean to get caught up talking to her." Mack’s chest rumbled with a growl and Will chuckled. "You jealous? The big bad alpha Macklin Celebrini, future captain of the San Jose sharks, jealous?"
"Will." Mack warned, voice deep. Mack was going to tie Will up and lock him away in this house. Make sure no one sees him ever again, no one can touch him. No one else is allowed to scent or smell him, talk to him. Will is Mack’s.
“Yea, yea, Mack.” Will squeezed his side, tugging him a little closer.
“I went to BC with her. We took a class together and were partners for a project.” Mack didn’t like it. Will already knew her and it bothered him. “We were just catching up. Didn’t mean to worry you.”
“But she was an omega.” Mack muttered more to himself than to Will.
“Yea? And she has a partner back in Mass.”
Mack felt his world light up. His head lifted to look at Will, and the beta was looking down at him, a toothy smile on his face.
Their night dissolved after that. Mack shoving at Will playfully, demanding he explain more. He needed to be certain, if only to calm his inner thoughts from earlier. And Will obliged, telling him of the history course they took together, how they needed to present a project, and they close the Lexington battle that went Will back each year to watch. He dragged Mack to it once. It was kind of boring to him, but Will had been very invested in it - so Mack was too.
And that’s ultimately how they ended up in their current position the next day. Mack against Will, the beta napping behind him in the calm winter afternoon of San Jose. Their house was freezing, but that’s how Mack preferred it and Will just let him keep it that way.
Mack still didn’t tell Will about his anxious scenting and needing him nearby all the time. But he had a feeling Will knew, or if he didn’t, he would understand. But something was still off, a thought in the back of his mind he kept shoving away and pushing further down. A hole he didn’t want to think about, and never wanted to bring up.
