Jerry Garcia
Jerry Garcia died on August 9, 1995. The morning DJ on the radio station I listen to in the car does a daily feature about a half-hour before he begins his program shift called "Waking the Dead" where he plays a song and provides a bit of Grateful Dead history. Remembering the anniversary of Jerry Garcia's death, he played a recording of Garcia performing Bob Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door".
Listening, the question occurred to me: "Did I pass the acid test?"
I don't know the answer. A friend's posted a photo from a local concert of an old man with a long waking stick wearing a very colorful Grateful Dead shirt and a MAGA hat. I wonder how long these tests last anyhow?
I got introduced to the lovely Ethan Hein here on Tumblr. Hein has a very good blog--not on here--and his post, Good old Grateful Dead, is very insightful about the band and Jerry Garcia.
Lecture 9: “Can’t Come Down” by The Grateful Dead (formerly known as The Warlocks, and also going by “Emergency Crew”), recorded on November 3, 1965, for Autumn Records, San Francisco. This is an example of early Grateful Dead, the kind of sound the band specialized in during its early years and involvement in Ken Kesey’s Acid Tests. Although the Dead began as a psychedelic band in the mid-1960s, they evolved over the decades in striking ways, blending a variety of different types of music together, including rock, jazz, folk, country, and blues.
Today marks the anniversary of the first appearance by The Warlocks—later renamed The Grateful Dead—at a Merry Prankster Acid Test.
