The Legend of Xanadu, Nihon Falcom, pc engine
Tier list of every RPG I've ever played. This was so fun to make! I'm prepared to face any judgement 😂✌️
RPGs are my favorite video game genre. And a friend of mine was like "hey we should do tier lists for every RPG we've ever played". And I was like... "Hell yeah! 🔥" The rest is history 😂
Vagrant Story (2000)
Heroes of the Lance (DOS)
My Black Myth WuKong hot take is this:
The game is good.
Not great.
Not groundbreaking.
Not next-gen.
Just good.
To have been made by a team of 30, really good. But that's all.
I was expecting a GoW, cinematic experience with DMC or Bayonetta style combat. And while the boss fights are great, and the setting is gorgeous, the game feels very passing average. The combat system thus far is just spam square while occasionally pressing a heavy attack button. And also remember to dodge. And that's really it. Yeah there's transformations, items and a few rpg mechanics, and spells, but the combat genuinely doesn't feel varied enough to me in comparisons to it's contemporaries.
I do not think that having no block or parry button was a good idea. This concept was MADE for Sekiro style parrying. Don't make me Sun Wukong and never let me parry an opponents attack. Like why bro?
As of right now I am level 19 and I am handling most bosses with about the same level of effort as I'd need for a GOW boss on normal mode. So I'm having fun, but I can't pretend this game doesn't make me wanna play GOW or Darksiders III or some similar game that did combat better.
For example, using just one weapon alone in the GOW series will give you several different combos and ranged attacks. You can play the whole game with just the blades of Athena or the leviathan axe and you won't feel the combat get stale. You have so many options for how to handle enemies with one weapon that using other weapons can sometimes be an afterthought. Meanwhile in Black Myth, I desperately wish I could do more varried combos earlier in the game. I'm damn near level 20 and my best strategy is still to spam square till I'm about to get hit, dodge, then heavy attack when I see an opening. And thats all. I never have to try harder than that or mix up my strategy.
Good game. But not because it does anything special or better than anything that came before it. The only thing that truly feels special about this game is it's setting and characters. That alone carries the game. But if it weren't for that, I dare say this game would be getting slightly lower review scores. I go so far as to say that this game feels like something I could've played on PS3 or PS4. One or two consol generations ago, I'd say 9-10 amazing. But this time around, this feels like a very last generation gaming experience to me.
I'd give this game a hard 7-10.
6.5 - 10 if I were being a stickler.
Is Monster Hunter Really Getting Easier?
I started in 4th gen and I haven't seen much difference in difficulty besides the game getting harder a bit slower. Capcom probably just figured out how to fine-tune a difficulty and learning curve more. And I would say that my skull is just a bit above average.
I think that the difficulty difference may also be more noticeable to somebody who has started in even earlier games that I did, since earlier games weren't as well balanced as newer games were (MHFU Plesioth hipcheck go brrrr).
We finished Alundra!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Today @noisetank01 and I finally finished Alundra!!!! After 3 years of on-again-off-again playing, we got through the end. In the (likely) case that you haven’t heard of Alundra, think of it as like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Scale back the combat difficulty, throw in an extremely cool plot and characters with excellent dialogue, toss in a fantastic soundtrack, and crank the puzzle difficulty way the fuck up. Like seriously, the puzzles in this game are insanely difficult compared to any action rpg/platformer we’ve ever played. We started the game with the goal of getting through it without looking up info a FAQ. Sadly we did not achieve this: There were about 3 parts in the game wherein we looked up a puzzle answer (after hours of effort per puzzle). That said, we got through the vast majority of the game without the use of a guide. If you like Zelda, but have a yearning for more challenging puzzles, I strongly recommend you give Alundra a try. 10/10
