Pauri – A Cool Hill Station with Blissful Scenic Splendor
If you are looking for alluring snow peaks, stunning sunset views, serenity and pristine settings; look no further and head to the green and cool environs of Pauri, nestled in the high hills of the state of Uttarakhand.
It is an ideal place to relax and rejuvenate, away from the demanding and maddening city life. I would strongly recommend a stay in V-Resorts, Pauri. The place is decently sized, very well kept and nicely located on the roadside, facing the snow topped Himalayan range of Chaukhamba peaks. One can just sit outside their rooms on the gallery couch and relax for hours absorbing the cool environment with abundant spurts of fresh air, and at the same time enjoy the breathtaking view of the hills around.
There are plenty of scenic and religious spots in and around Pauri. One among these is the renowned G.B. Pant Engineering College, perched over the hills, located at very scenic place called Ghurduri, also known as New Pauri. The college is set on top of the mountains overlooking the snow capped peaks. The brick red look of the slanting roofs of the buildings around gives it a unique picturesque feel.
One can also go to Kandoliya Park and the Kandoliya Devta Temple. This place is surrounded by dense forest of Deodar and Pine trees. The trees are very tall and have mighty trunks. Under the shade of trees, cool breeze blows in all parts of the day here. There is an eatery and children park as well inside the park. The road head is lined with a little market comprising of small shops and tea joints.
The uphill road on the other side of Kandoliya park leads to Ransi field, regarded as one of the highest located stadium in Asia, more than 2000 meters from sea level. The view of snow clad mountains is quite spectacular from here. Driving further on the same road will lead you to an ancient, eighth century temple of Lord Shiva, famously known as Kyunkaleshwar Mahadev. The temple complex is also a transit residence of the holy priests. This temple bears extreme resemblance to the famous temple structure at Kedarnath.
If you love the forest, then Adwani is the best place to explore. About 10 kms from Pauri, the road passes through this dense forest. Wild animals and birds can be spotted here even during the day time. All the time while you are here, you can hear high pitched chirping and buzzing sound of the insects and the birds. While I was driving down, I was lucky to spot a wild hen, a deer, a fox and a porcupine. From the Adwani zero point, one can do a uphill trek to Rani Garh temple and experience from the top a 360 degree view of the high hills and the forest.
At just 20-30 minutes drive, there is another ancient temple of Lord Laxman located inside the Deval village near Kotkhal. The road passing through Pauri Jail leads to this place. This temple is made of dark grey stones and has several multiple temples of small and large size inside the complex. The approach to this temple is through Deval village, so one can see the glimpses of village life in the hills. People can be seen ploughing and sowing the fields, grazing the animals, building or repairing their houses or carrying out the daily chores.
The visit to famous Danda Nagraja, a divine temple, is much recommended for religiously oriented. It’s a highly regarded holy place where devotees throng from all over Uttarakhand, especially from Garhwal region. It is at about 30 kms drive from Pauri and is frequented by pilgrims and tourists alike for religious faith and wish fulfilment.
There is another mesmerising tiny hill spot, Khirsu at about 15-20 kms. The place offers spectacular view of the Himalayas and has a lush green park to visit for. For fellow traveler’s benefit, I have covered it exclusively in another post.
Pauri Bazaar is another tourist attraction. The colourful hand-knitted genuine woollen sweaters are best to buy from here. You will be amazed by the impeccable quality of knitting and purity of the wool. The bazaar is huge and runs through the streets in two directions, one on the downhill and another on the straight-up road. Almost everything is available in Pauri Bazaar. Garhwal Sweet shop is very famous for its sweets and quick delights. Cube shaped chocolate sweet and Bal Mithayee is a must savour, a speciality of the hill state.
And if one is interested to drive 90 kms round trip, Devprayag is a place to visit for. The holy confluence of river Bhagirathi and Alaknanda is quite blissful. While Bhagirathi flows ferociously, Alaknand is calm; one has muddy water while the other pristine! Take a holy dip at the confluence and attend the evening aarti in a religiously charged up atmosphere, and drive back in the adventurous darkness of the hills. In the darkness, if you are lucky, you may spot leopards strolling on the roads.
As the dark begins to set in, I return to the resort in Pauri. The night at the resort is even more exciting. The resort illuminates in the darkness of the hills. It soon becomes cold and windy; and here comes the bonfire and hot-served snacks, giving the comfort and the joy to the soul in the chill. The twinkling lights in the village homes on the faraway hills give a feeling as if the stars have descended down on earth. The outline of the hilltop edges appears like a sketch drawn on a canvas with a streak of orange in the skyline of the sun gone down.
No wonder, Pauri is a cool destination to be in; serene, measly crowded, great weather, green settings, stunning view of the Himalayan range, and the much sought after scenic beauty in abundance too.
