Kelsey was practically stomping as she made her way up the stairs of the Astronomy Tower. She knew that this whole "learn to understand and respect each other by seeing into each other's minds" thing was partially her fault since she'd started the group text about Clara, but that didn't mean she liked the idea of it any better. She kept what went on in her head private from herself half the time, the last thing she needed was for someone else to be looking into. As she reached the top of the Tower, she saw that she was alone for the moment. She slung her bag down with the strap and it landed in the corner with a loud thud. Kelsey didn't care though, it's not like there was anything breakable in there. She walked over to the edge of the room, sitting down and letting her feet dangle over the ledge they used for telescopes.
Lydia purposefully strode up the steps of the Astronomy Tower, head high and arms behind her back. She'd admittedly lost track of time looking up information about possible vacation spots in Mexico but she didn't feel inclined to rush. It should be a quick matter, after all, getting into Kelsey's head and showing her how it was done. Lydia didn't fancy the idea of anyone getting a peek into her mind which made her even more grateful that Kelsey had reached out first; a 5th year had far less of a chance of actually succeeding, right? When she finally walked in, Lydia saw Kelsey already there and extended a warm smile, placing her bag down and perching further down among the edge. She couldn't help but be a little confused as to what beef Kelsey could possibly have with her -had they ever even spoken before?- but she assumed she'd figure it out in due time. "Hello," she greeted, reaching into her pocket and gripping her wand. "I presume you've had a nice day?"
Kelsey didn't return Lydia's smile, instead turning back to look up at the sky. There weren't many strong, recognizable constellations this time of year. Only the Phoenix. Her father used to tell her stories of Dumbledore's pet Phoenix, Fawkes, and the grieving music he'd flown above Hogwarts singing when the Headmaster had died. Whenever she looked up at the bird in the sky, it reminded her of the story. And tonight, she couldn't help the faint sadness that lingered when she gazed at it. Whether it was because of the thought of her father or the bird, she wasn't sure. "I was having a nice day," She muttered, still not looking down. "Until now."
Lydia shrugged at Kelsey's muttering. "Shame. I hate to think that I'm going to have to see inside a sad mind," she jested, tossing her hair behind her shoulder. "Well, don't worry. In sure we can get through this quickly and you can get on with your day. You do know the basics to Legilimency, yes?"
Kelsey looked up, feeling slightly more interested now. "You aren't going to see anything," She smirked, with a flip of her hair. She liked anything a little bit better when it was a challenge. "I do," She muttered, with an eye roll. "It's pretty simple to figure out when the incantation is part of the title." She also knew the basic of Occlumency. She'd picked up a book on it the other day when Becca was looking for some magical mystery novel in the school library the other day. And she figured by now, she was pretty good at keeping her mind closed anyways.
Lydia kept a smile as pleasant as she could on her face, though her lips were tighter on the sides than they usually were. What was this girl's problem with her? Shaking it off, she tapped a finger to her chin. "Does that mean you'd like to go first? Show me how it's done?" Lydia spoke the challenge through a toothy grin, already wishing she was at dinner. At least helping a 5th year out fulfilled her daily goal of helping someone less fortunate than her.
Kelsey rolled her eyes. Internally she was a little bit flustered, it wouldn't look very good if she just trash-talked Lydia and then came up with nothing when she tried. Kelsey didn't like failing, it was one of the reasons she came off so nonchalant about her classwork even while maintaining good grades. It was always good to have an out even if things didn't go right. "Fine," She muttered, turning towards Lydia and crossing her legs. "You ready?"
Lydia nodded. "I'm always ready," she replied simply, folding her hands neatly on her lap, closing her eyes shut for a moment, then opening them again and meeting Kelsey's straight on. She tried not to let anything cloud her mind, not school, not home life, not Liam, and focused on keeping her mind blank as she waited for Kelsey to begin.
Kelsey pulled her wand out of her pocket, grapsing the willow wood hard as she concentrated. 'I want to see into Lydia's mind, I have to see into her mind,' She closed her eyes or a minute, focusing on the thought before raising her wnad in front of her. "Legilimens!" She shouted, but only a tiny flicker of blue light yielded from the end of her light, about the size of a firefly. It flickered for a moment before extinguishing itself. "Damn it," She muttered.
Lydia waited for the inevitable breach - she imagined she'd be able to feel it - when Kelsey was muttering and her wand had shut down. "It's alright. It can take quite a bit. Go ahead, try again,"Lydia prompted, opening her mind more and looking Kelsey straight in the eye, waiting for it again.
Kelsey ground her teeth, hating that Lydia was being nice about this. Why couldn't she just bitch back at her like a normal person? She could even get her friends to strike back at her when she was feeling particularly grumpy, she disliked not getting a reaction. She raised her wand again with a harder swish, "LEGILIMENS!" She shouted, the spark shorted out faster this time. She waved her wand back and forth in frustration. She wasn't used to failing things, even things she didn't put any effort into.
Lydia scooted closer to Kelsey when the spell failed a second time. "Don't bother trying it right now. When you're frustrated, it'll make concentrating even more difficult. You can take a moment to sit and cool down if you'd like before giving it another go. I don't mind."
Kelsey clenched her fists. She was always frustrated, it had never given her any issue before. Still, she sat and took a deep breathe. When she was upset when she was younger, her mum used to say “positivity in, negativity out” and she’d visualized all of her anger just floating away. It wasn’t as easy anymore. “Maybe you should just try,” She grumbled.
