JAGO - Aiace and Cassandra (2022)
JAGO is an Italian artist working in the field of sculpture. He was born in Frosinone (Italy) in 1987, where he studied art high school and then the Academy of Fine Arts (left in 2010). His artistic research is rooted in traditional techniques. Jago uses marble as a noble material, but he treats fundamental themes of the era he inhabits, establishing a direct relationship with the public through the use of video and social networks to share the production process.
The statue recalls the myth of Aiace and Cassandra from Aeneid. Cassandra was a prophetess able to predict the decay of Troy, but condemned to be believed by anyone because she refused an intercourse with Apollo.
Troy was burning and Aiace was a military head who saw Cassandra trying to hide herself at a temple named after Athena but has been found and raped by Aiace. The statue represent the rage and the reclutance of Cassandra to Aiace's intentions.
According to the myth, Cassandra later asked goddess Athena for revenge and Aiace died afterwards.
Aiace - La rasatura
“The noble man, must live well or well to die, the rest is nothing!” With these words Aiace, Prince of Salamina, champion of the Achaeans, second as strength only to Achilles, describes his drama in the work of Sofocle.Aiace is driven by passion, strength, desire for nobility and honor; his enemy Athena is moved by the cold reason and determines that he strikes against him a trap from which Aiace can only come out killing himself, thus regaining the lost honor.
Here we see the backstage of the opera presented at the Greek Theater in Syracuse, where for over a hundred years the great actors have faced the great Greek tragedies of the past. As some of them have said, one thing is to play in the darkness of a small theater, on a stage where you can do just a few steps, another thing is to play during the day, in front of thousands of spectators on a broad stage more than one hundred yards where every word that has been said, has already been recited a thousand years before.
