Yesterday I had one of the best project kickoff meetings ever. My agency hired some planning consultants on behalf of a very, very small town to do a streetscape concept plan and sidewalk inventory.
For the most part it was just a regular kickoff meeting, talking about scope and schedule, which community stakeholders to reach out to, opportunities for public input, etc.
But I was blown away by the Town Supervisor, a woman in her late 60's (ish?). She kept mentioning how many young people had bought homes and businesses during Covid and how she wanted to make sure they were involved in the planning process. It was clear she'd personally talked to many of them and knew their names.
At the end of the meeting, she said (paraphrasing here), "I can't wait to see what these young people are going to do. It's so exciting. They're the ones that will be telling the story of the town. My generation told it for a long time and I know our story, but I can't wait to see the new direction these young people will make."
Legit I almost teared up. When it comes to Millenials and Gen Z, most mayors and supervisors I've worked with are patronizing at best, and at worst dismissive. It's so refreshing to work with someone who seems completely uninvested in her own political power, so willing to do whatever she can to help this new generation come in and shape the community.
