The Sparrows Are Flying Again
The sparrows are flying again.
The words sent a shiver down his spine and he leaned forward in the chair for a moment, closing his eyes against the memories. It wasn’t until almost too late that he found out what the sparrows had to do with anything at all.
Psychopomps, mythological beings that escorted souls back and forth from the land of the dead.
No one had said that this event would be a real thing and it would include what seemed – and very well may have been – millions of sparrows doing just that; taking a soul back to the land of the dead. But it was a soul who shouldn’t have existed at all.
A brain tumor that was actually parts of a mostly absorbed in the womb twin that was growing on its own being removed from the brain of an eleven-year-old boy. A man, grown, writing under a pseudonym who was ‘killed’ when the man decided to go back to writing as himself. A pseudonym who took on the physical form of that long lost ‘twin,’ a violent, murderous psychopath who also took on the characteristics of the main character of the books written under his name.
The sparrows are flying again. George Stark is back from the dead.
The first and last confrontation with Stark, the man who was falling apart, rotting, losing cohesion because he really wasn’t supposed to be alive after all. A confrontation that Alan had been so sure would be his last.
He opened his eyes and leaned back in the chair, his hands twisting almost without conscious thought to send a bird flapping across the wall through the light sitting on the desk. The bird then landed on a branch and Alan stared at the shadow for a long time.
That was how it had started, sparrows perched on the branches of the trees around the house. Then they had continued to gather until such a large number screeched through the house that Alan had again been sure that they were probably going to die.
But the birds hadn’t come for them. No, they had come for Stark. To escort him back to the land of the dead where he was supposed to be. The had pecked him to death, ripped him apart and literally carried him off to…wherever they had gone.
The sparrows are flying again.
The shadow bird took flight once more and Alan’s hands moved so quickly that it seemed like several had joined it, a frown on his face as he focused before a single one took roost on a branch once more.
“A new bird!” The voice from the doorway startled him and his hands dropped as he turned toward it. Todd. His ten-year-old son was standing there with a smile on his tired face. He was always interested in any kind of tricks or sleight of hand that Alan might share with him.
Alan smiled a little in return but then it faded somewhat. “It’s late, son. What are you doing up?” He gestured for the boy to enter the dimly lit office and Todd did so without hesitation, moving to stand next to his father’s chair.
“I couldn’t sleep.” He admitted after a long moment. “I had a nightmare.” The last was almost too quiet to hear, but Alan had no troubles. “Why are you up?”
Alan was quiet for a long moment and then he told the truth. “I had a nightmare, too.” It was a common occurrence since the Beaumont affair. One didn’t have their entire belief system turned upside down while confronting something so utterly impossible as he had without something lingering behind.
“Oh.” Todd replied simply, accepting, sympathetic but quickly distracted. Perhaps not wanting to linger because he didn’t want to elaborate himself. “Will you teach me the new bird?”
“Sparrow.”
Todd smiled at that. “Will you teach me the sparrow?”
Alan nodded and shifted so that Todd could sit between his legs in the chair, both in front of the light with the wall across from them. After they were settled, he began to show the boy how to make the shadows dance.
The sparrows are flying again.
"That belongs in the darkness. Let the darkness bear it away."
Alan Pangborn The final words of the Castle Rock novels. I just finished up "Needful Things" and it was as fun as I remembered it. Pangborn is one of my favourite Stephen King characters, so I wanted to post his last (canon) line.
I'm rereading Needful Things and something made me chuckle:
There's a mechanic who walked into Needful Things and is confessing his anxieties about a black man getting in the White House. The book came out in 1991 so it's funny to think that 17 years later, a black man DOES indeed become president for 8 years. It gave me a little chuckle cuz whenever Stephen King sets his stories in the then-modern day, the story inadvertently becomes a time capsule for that era
Absolutely adore castle rock, as a big fan of Stephen king books it’s great to see something very in spirit to his books on screen. It’s not based on any one book (to what I know) and more sort “inspired by” and “based” on his works. Like they references Cujo and the shining as stuff that happened but it’s not a adaption.
One of my favorite things is the relationship between Alan Pangborn (who I know from Needful things- he’s different but very much in spirit of the book character) and Ruth Deaver who’s showing signs of Alzheimer’s . It’s nice to see a relationship between older people and by god my heart can’t handle it with how he cares for her and advocates for her whits?
I just know it’s not going to end well for them and I don’t think I can take it
#Stephenking Monday! And this time, we're talking about one of my favorite novels: #Needfulthings. Join me as we dissect this tale of grudges and greed, and when we're done, let me know... WHAT is your Needful thing?
(Oh, yeah, also like, share, comment and subscribe!)
