The Oranges
At his nadir, The man from del monte Got up in the night And stood in the dark In his room In his house In front of his orange fields Which Were soon to be ripe And consumed by those Whom he did not know;
And he was in charge of Getting this done.
He got up in the night Because he saw in his sleep A happening That had impacted itself On all of his oranges.
Under the peel Each of the segments Was covered with discharge
Deposits of calculus, an “indoor guano”, a lime scale forming Within each segment.
He sold his fields to a coward And left before dawn
The oranges were fine.
