Sorry the picture is a bit blurry but it's not about the picture but about the content of the book. It's about Alexander Scott, Nelson's Chaplain and presumed spy. This book is about his life, but also about his suspected espionage activities in France and the French Navy.

Something that may now have caught the eye of anyone who has read the Aubrey-Maturin novels by Patrick O'Brian. Could it be that Stephen Maturin is based on Alexander Scott? Well, if anyone is interested and wants to know more, they can get some more information here and maybe read the book.

So the song ‘Departe, departe’ is often thought to have been written by Alexander Scott as a farewell from the Master of Erskine to the dowager queen Mary of Guise before he fought at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh where he died, and even though that last part strikes me as rather fanciful I’m still a sucker for a good story behind a song so catch me sniffling into a hanky every time I play it

#Mary of Guise #Renaissance music #Alexander Scott #Robert Master of Erskine #Scottish history #The idea that it was addressed to Mary of Guise that is- I've long learnt to be highly sceptical of stories that give queens lovers #And definitely I think there's no chance they had an actual full blown relationship that seems like post-Reformation tittle tattle #Though I suppose it's not impossible that it could have been meant as a chaste/courtly love lyric from a man going on a dangerous mission #Since the authorship by Alexander Scott doesn't appear to have been in doubt and the Bannatyne MS says it was by the Master of Erskine #Though the Bannatyne MS was compiled twenty years after Pinkie and after the Reformation when Mary of Guise was hardly popular #So it's probably the Master of Erskine had something to do with it just I'm less sure about the later linking of Mary of Guise to the legend #But it's still a beautiful song and the story- even if spurious- adds an extra element to how it was probably viewed in the 16th c.#The Master of Erskine in question would appear to have been Robert Erskine brother to John Earl of Mar #And also to Margaret Erskine James V's mistress and formidable mother of James Earl of Moray #And the Erskines were closely associated with the raising of royal children #Scottish music #Music
