A quick wash down from an evaluation session: Jones Aviator 158 vs Yes Standard 158 Both are great boards- the Jones has the edge for charging- it accelerates a little quicker and is slightly more responsive edge-to-edge. But the Standard is more versatile and forgiving- a lovely all-rounder for proper mountains. As a 158 all-mountain board needs to do a bit of everything, I’ll hang on to the Standard, but honestly the Jones is pretty special in this size having ridden both the 156 and 160 previously.

2016 Transition Patrol Carbon
Less weight, same strength. That’s the promise of the carbon fibre all-mountain bike- one that Transition promises to deliver on with their new Patrol Carbon. Providing a “crisp and responsive ride with excellent trail feel,” the new composite model uses the same GiddyUp four-bar suspension as its alloy forebearer but shaves 600g (1.3lb) for an impressive 6.5lb medium frame/shock weight.
In keeping with current trends, the 155mm frame is “long, low, and slack,” sporting a 583mm top tube (medium) and 65-degree head angle. (Unsagged, the bottom bracket sits at a low-but-manageable 339mm.) All-day and pack-shunning riders will appreciate the ability to Put A Bottle and Stuff in There- a capacity that’s increasingly overlooked on trail frames. For those about to get rad, Transition supports you, adding an ISCG05 chainguide mount to the mix.
Fully-lined Tube Inside Tube System internal cable routing aims to keep rattles at bay and a BSA threaded bottom bracket is always welcome. A collet-type main pivot should help keep the front of the bike solidly connected to the rear while a 12x142mm Syntace rear axle means that no new wheels or chainrings are required. The bottom line is a bike that (hyperbole alert) “climbs like an e-bike, and descends like a downhill bike.”

PhilBike2015: YT Industries Capra Enduro and Felt 29er Edict Carbon
Checkout the YT Industries Capra Enduro Bike, now locally available (contact us) and the Felt Edict 29er
YT Industries unveils all-new Carbon Enduro Bike: the Capra After two years of development, YT Industries unveils theír all-new 650B enduro bike – the “Capra”. With its aggressive geometry, pretty lightweight carbon frame and well-thought specs it claims to combine top downhill performance with XC-like climbing abilities at an interesting price point.
“Capra Ibex” – the mountain goat – was eponymous for the bike and the main goals during the development: “We wanted to design a unique bike, that feels like a full-grown downhill rig while still going uphill like a xc bike. Of course this goal sounds unrealistic at first, but we still tried to reach them as close as possible” says YT Industries’ CEO Markus Flossmann.
Felt might not be the first name you think of for fast mountain bikes but the electrifyingly quick, yet effortlessly enjoyable Edict could well change all that.
Ride and handling: an effortless speed merchant
Using engineered flex in the rear stays to save weight compared to a ‘proper’ rear pivot is a common race bike concept, but results can be mixed to say the least. Felt’s combination of main pivot point, rocker linkage and custom tuned RockShox shock really works well though.
