Alternative names for Harry and Ginny's children
I think everyone can agree that JK Rowling is not only a terrible person but also a terrible writer. Whilst I have many (and I mean many) problems with the Harry Potter books, I'll stick to one issue at a time.
Today's issue:
Whatever Harry and Ginny (but mainly Harry ofc) named their children
I really hate the idea that Harry named all of his kids after dead people. I know it's a way to 'honour' them but I think it was just a really bad idea.
It confuses me too because Ron and Hermione's children have perfectly normal and individual names. Why couldn't the same be done for Ginny and Harry?
It would put enormous pressure on Harry's children to live up to the heroes he named them after. Not only do they already have this pressure because their dad is the literal chosen one but why not make it worse by naming them after famous and beloved war heroes too? I get that Harry was trying to honour his parents and people close to him but I think a middle name would be just fine. There is really no need for James and Lily Potter II.
So I thought what alternatives we could use instead. I've taken into consideration the original names of Harry's kids but also the naming traditions of the Weasleys and the Evans families. The Weasleys normally go with old, English, Arthurian legends kind of names and the Evans family (or at least the two characters we know) were named after flowers, Lily and Petunia.
I think since Sirius didn't have any children that maybe Harry would have liked to take on his family naming tradition of stars / galaxies too. Also, Ginny's brother is called Percy which gives me the same vibes as the Black family - I think there are definitely a few names which overlap.
I think having James, Sirius and Lily as middle names is perfect. It still honours those closest to Harry but it's also just a middle name and the children have their own unique identity, too.
Anyway, here are my suggestions:
Boy's names
- Lionel (Leo)
follows the Weasley's tradition of Arthurian legends or old English names but also could follow Sirius' family if you gave him the nickname Leo
- Felix
means "happy" or "lucky" and I feel like Harry and Ginny would want to give their child a name with a positive connotation. Also, purely based on vibes, but the name Felix could 100% fit in with both the Weasleys or the Black family, much like Percy
- Alastair / Alistair / Alastor or Altair
I really hated the name Albus and I think Alastair could be the closest alternative since they both have the nickname Al. Also Alastair very much again sounds like a Weasley name. However, Alastor was Mad Eye Moody's name which is a shame since people would assume Harry was honoring him but apart from that, pretty solid name suggestion. You could also use the name Altair which is similar and means "star".
- Daniel
I like this one less than the others but it's still on theme with the Weasley's Arthurian legends and you may also prefer a more muggle-sounding name then a wizard one
- Joseph
again if you wanted a more muggle-sounding name. Also not my favourite but still an alternative and on theme with the Weasleys
- Alban
also has the nickname Al for some kind of tie to the official names. Also means "white" which is the same meaning as Albus and also Ginevra which is a nice bonus
- Finnian (Finn)
again another name which I think works for both wizards and muggles and also has a cute nickname. Finnian also means "white" and has the same Weasley charm to it as well in my opinion. Also Finnian James Potter sounds quite good
- Everett
another name with a positive meaning, this time meaning "brave" which is literally what Gryffindor is about. It's a less strong contender then some of the other names on this list but I feel like it deserves a place
Girl's names
- Luna
Okay, so back to maintaining the original names. I think Luna would be cool because 1, not only is she Ginny's friend and it gives us some sense that Ginny was involved in picking out the names but also Luna means "moon" and could also be taken as a female varient of Lupin, which would be a subtle reference to Remus. Lily Luna was also the name I found the least weird, I just thought that it would make so much more sense for the children to have their own identity and not just be walking memorials. Luna Lily works pretty well in my opinion
- Phoebe
follows the Black family's naming style again but also feels weirdly Weasley-ish to me. Also just a cute name in general and could work as a muggle name
- Marigold
This is more Lily's side of the family now. Flower themed name, sounds cute, gives the child their own identity out of their dead relatives - sounds good to me. Plus it means "golden flower" and I thought the gold part might be a nice touch of Gryffindor
- Susanna
this name literally means "Lily" like come on now. Only part I'm hesitant on is that Susanna Lily Potter would basically be the same thing as naming your daughter Lily² Potter. To be fair though, I don't think this would be a massive deal and plus Susanna is cute, on theme and has a direct meaning
- Lunette / Lunetta
If you wanted to stick onto a similar theme of Luna but also feel like Luna is too much because it's still named after another character, Lunette or Lunetta could be an alternative. Also, another name that fits the Arthurian legends
If any of you guys have any other alternative names I'd be happy to hear them :)
My personal three, though, would probably be:
- Lionel "Leo" James Potter
- Felix Sirius Potter
- Marigold Lily Potter
Thank you bye bye <3
ok, so we kind of agreed on lucas being at least half korean because of his surname.
it's a little complicated since apparently koh can also be thai and chinese, but if we're talking korean, i would like to find a good name for him.
traditionally korean people do have a korean name besides their english version, like felix (from stray kids). his name is lee felix, but it's also lee yongbok.
so i went into a deep hole, to name characters for a future project, and encountered some options i liked for lucas.
i started by the meaning of the name, then found some options.
Lucas means either "man from Lucania" or bringer of light. since we know lucas wasn't born in Italy, i came to the conclusion that when his parents thought of the name lucas, they may have searched for the meaning and gave it to him because of it.
it could be just because "oh i love the name" but this is my blog and we only work with paranoia and overthinking, so get into it.
thinking about that meaning, i started researching names in korean that could mean the same thing... to come across absolutely nothing. there's no "bringer of light" or synonyms that fit in, BUT, there's a few that mean light, and technically someone that brings light has light in them, right?
i'll just assume you said "yes" and move on.
so, these are the names i found:
Ha-ru (하루) - In addition to being an indigenous Korean name, Ha-ru is also a Japanese name that means springtime, sun, sunlight, sunny. it's mostly given to kids who were born in sunny days. since lucas is an aries, he was born in spring, so... pretty good candidate!
Jeong-hui (정후) - The name Jeong-hui can be created by combining hanja that mean correct, proper, right, gentle, still, or quiet with beauty, glorious, bright, or splendid.
Jung-hee (정희) - Sometimes written as Jeong-hui, both names can be written with hanja meaning correct, still, or gentle, and beauty, bright, or glorious.
Myeong (명) - The Korean name Myeong, also spelled Myung, Myoung, or Myong, evolved from the Chinese name Ming. The hanja 明, meaning brilliance or bright, is used for the surname Myeong and when used in a forename, any one of 19 hanja that read Myeong can be used.
Byung-ho (병호) - Byung-ho combines glorious, bright, luminous, and vast, numerous, great.
Chan-yeol (찬열) - Chan-yeol means bright, vivid, illuminating, and vehement, ardent, and fiery.
to lucas' personality, i think chan-yeol fits in quite well. he is fiery and vehement, besides being HELLA vivid. it kind of became my favorite afterwards. and although there are a lot of names that mean bright or vivid, to me lucas is giving chan-yeol, but i would love to hear what actual korean players have to say about it, so if you're out there, let me know!
Peter: *holding a block of cheese* Hey, Mr. Stark, do you want some of this loaf of milk?
Tony: Well, not when you put it like that...
Peter: *picks up a tub of yogurt* How about some of this fermented pudding?
Tony: Why must you be like this, Pete?
Peter: So you don't want any?
Tony: Not anymore, I don't.
Peter:Good! That means there's more for me.
The Fuzz could work as a new name too, since it can reference bee fuzz or cat fuzz and, therefore, includes them both. 🐝🐱
(2/2) The Fuzz is also slang for the police, so it also works as a pun for the two superheroes.👮♀️
The FUZZ! Oh, I love that. But have you also considered….
