Actually both of these animes are really similar in the way they handle the main characters’ sexual identities.Also,it’s basically impossible to watch SGRS without seeing that Kiku is obviously gay,they mention many times that he isn’t attracted to women.Obviously,yoi is different in that aspect but both of these animes treat their main characters’ sexualities and gender identities completely seriously

I’m actually very confused about SGRS (and only more after I re-watched it) because every hint points at Kiku being gay but he still says things like “I love Miyokichi” and sometimes gives mixed/confusing signs.

Maybe it’s just his guilt and/or his fear of being a social outcast but I feel like the show isn’t being clear about how we should interpret the things he says and sometimes does. A male -- well, let’s say -- friend of mine said that SGRS pulls lots of fujoshi baiting on us with the way of depicting Kiku’s and Shin’s relationship and I was angry and offended because a show of this caliber doesn’t do that but... I still can’t decide if the trio’s relationship and Kiku’s feelings/personality are just too Japanese for me to completely understand or it’s the result of inconsistent writing if I can’t get it. And it makes me REALLY frustrated because I love this anime and I DO think it would be a masterpiece if it wasn’t so vague about this.

I have high hopes for the second season though.

He has to frame his questions very clearly and Song Lan needs multiple choice answers. It’s fun for nobody.

But in a world in a world where we get our Yi City Crew hanging out and travelling for whatever reasons post series, then yes, they absolutely text, and they are not happy texts because they move a lot of their arguments to their phones where they can’t distress Xiao Xingchen.

Xue Yang tones down his emoji usage with him, mostly because he’s irritable around Song Lan and texting isn’t fun when it’s with him.
