My Dinner with Andre (1981)
Dir. Louis Malle
Language: English
Vanya on 42nd Street was released in theaters on 13 September 1994.
Andre Gregory gathered together a group of actors to perform Anton Chekhov's 1899 play, Uncle Vanya (adapted by David Mamet), in the abandoned New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street in order to better understand Chekhov's work. The performances were for invited guests only, and took place over the course of 3 years.
Gregory and director Louis Malle (who had worked together on 1981's My Dinner with Andre, which also included Wallace Shawn, who plays Vanya in Vanya on 42nd Street), decided to document one of the performances.
29-year-old Julianne Moore began working with Gregory on Uncle Vanya in 1990, and by the film's release her film career had been mostly supporting roles (she had received a Daytime Emmy in 1988 for her work on As the World Turns), while much of the cast included seasoned stage performers including Phoebe Brand, Lynn Cohen, George Gaynes, and Larry Pine.
Vanya on 42nd Street was named one of the best films by numerous publications, including The Los Angeles Times (#1), The Baltimore Sun (#2), The Chicago Tribune (#7), and top ten by USA Today and The New York Times.
It was Louis Malle's final film. He died from lymphoma at the age of 63 in November 1995.
Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, Liz Smith, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol and André Gregory during an AIDS benefit at the Javits Center in New York City on April 29, 1986.
