Demolition Lovers - Red Widow (Latrodectus bishopi)

widow spiders are named as such because they practice sexual cannibalism - the female eats the male after mating. additionally, widow spiders are venomous (although the red widow's venom isn't as dangerous as the black widow's)

i thought the combination of these traits was kinda fitting for the demolition lovers :p i chose this specific species of widow because they often have a heart pattern on their abdomen which i also thought was fitting cause... you know... lovers...

Scientific name: Opabina regalis

Was found in: British Columbia, near the seafloor

Info: Opabinia is a marine species that is now extinct, but lived in the middle of the Cambrian era. The first fossil was discovered in the 1970s, and the first presentation of the creature made the audience laugh due to its appearance. It has 5 mushroom-shaped eyes, and a long hollow proboscis with spines at the end. The creature's length (excluding proboscis) ranges from 4 cm (1.6 in) to 7 cm (2.8 in). It is suspected that Opabinia used its proboscis to search through sediment on the sea floor to find food.

finished work on the plot for a short(ish) book today ...after starting plotting it around 24 hour ago. so here’s a celebratory half hour scribble of my magic moth protagonist magdalena

i’m a bit nervous about this story, since usually plotting for me takes months and months (in fact, this is the second story i’ve actually fully plotted after king, out of my half a dozen ideas ive got on the backburner) and this fell into place so smoothly and quickly i'm kind of suspicious and not confident i’m looking at it with objective eyes...

but! i’m trying to trust myself and my muse and my stories more - trying to just go with the flow and not worry about a story being totally perfect and flawless 100% of the time, and just try to make sure every story i write is the best version of itself, and nothing more.

Common name: Mediterranean Slipper Lobster

Scientific name: Scyllarides latus

Can be found in: Mediterranean Sea, Eastern Atlantic Ocean

Info: S. latus is a species of slipper lobster that lives in depths of 4-100 metres (13-328 ft), living in mostly sandy or rocky substrates. They prefer to live in areas with more than one exit on the ceilings of caves or within reefs. More than one will share the same shelter. They eat molluscs, limpets, gastropods, mussels, and bivalves. an S. latus can detect its prey under 3.5 cm (1.4 in) of sediment, and will bring it back to its shelter before eating it. They can also east oysters and squid. Their main predator is the Grey Triggerfish (Balistes capriscus). S. Latus is mostly nocturnal since its predators are diurnal (active during the day). S. latus doesn't have claws like true lobsters to protect from predators, so it either clings onto a surface or swims away by "tail flip."

Can be found in: The Eastern and Southern United States, (More specifically Virginia and Florida), Mexico, and parts of Central America

Info: The caterpillar's appearance makes it look like a small persian cat, giving it its "puss" name. Unfortunately, touching the bug causes the hairs to get embedded in the skin, causing rashes, blisters, and a severe burning pain. More extreme reactions can cause swollen lymph nodes, nausea, and respiratory distress. Most victims usually recover within a day, but extreme cases can linger for longer. There is no specific treatment for a sting, but ice packs, antihistamines, creams, and ointments can be used for pain relief.
