Happy almost-not valentine's day I wrote a little something
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Hey y'all! Doing a thing for day 2 of @eurydice-week. (Which I'm hosting by the way!!!!) The prompt for today is anything Orphydice related, so obviously I wrote something for it lol.
The rain had never been Eurydice’s friend. She hated it ever since she could remember, when loud thunderstorms made her crawl into her mother’s bed when she was small.
Although thunderstorms weren’t an issue for her when she grew up, the rain still was. When she lived on the streets, storms always seemed to come at a time when she couldn’t find shelter, and whatever she was saving to eat that day got ruined, as well as her getting soaked to the bone.
Now she was living with Orpheus, who had shelter from the rain, but with spring suddenly coming back, random downpours were always common.
Like the one that was happening right now.
Eurydice had woken up to the familiar sound of rain pelting on her roof, and she immediately buried her face into her pillow, hoping that by some miracle, she could sleep through it.
She did not, for the next thing she noticed was that the space beside her was empty.
Groaning, Eurydice propped herself up on her elbows, looking out at the open doorway.
“Orpheus?” she called out, hoping that he was at least inside the house.
No response.
Eurydice sighed. He was outside.
Shaking her head, Eurydice rolled out of bed and left her bedroom, knowing exactly where her lover was.
Lately, Orpheus had grown a fascination with sitting outside in the rain. It’s for inspiration, he claimed after the third time had done it. I need something new to work with.
Eurydice just thought he had a death wish.
Sure enough, Eurydice found Orpheus sitting on their front porch, staring intently at their yard. Rolling her eyes, Eurydice opened the front door and poked her head out.
“Good morning,” she said. Orpheus jolted in surprise, looking back at her with wide eyes.
“Oh! Hey! You scared me,” Orpheus said, grinning at her. Eurydice did not grin back.
“How’s the rain treating you?” she asked.
“Pretty good, actually,” Orpheus said cheerfully. “You should come sit with me.”
“And catch my death? No thanks,” Eurydice said, starting to shut the door.
“C’mon, Eurydice, I’m not asking you to go in the rain. Just sit on the porch with me,” Orpheus pleaded, hitting her with a smile that he knew Eurydice couldn’t say no to.
Eurydice breathed in a heavy sigh. “Fine,” she grumbled, stepping outside and sitting down on the front step next to Orpheus. Her lover wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close and kissing her cheek.
“Thank you,” he murmured in her ear. Eurydice leaned her head on his shoulder, watching the rain bounce off the stone steps they had leading up to their house.
This wasn’t really how she wanted to spend her morning, but she loved spending time with Orpheus.
The two just sat there on the porch for a long time, with a strange bliss falling over Eurydice. Something about how rhythmic the rain was falling…
Is this how Orpheus sees the rain? Beautiful, despite the cold and gray it brings?
Eurydice silently laughed at herself. Look who was turning into the poet now.
Speaking of the poet, Orpheus let out a sudden sigh, squeezing Eurydice’s shoulder.
“I just can’t figure it out,” he said.
“Figure out what?” Eurydice asked.
“What I’m trying to figure out,” Orpheus said. “I’m trying to think of something… awe-inspiring about this rain. Something that really makes you stop and appreciate it, y’know? But… I can’t think of anything.”
“Yeah, that’s because rain sucks,” Eurydice said.
“I think you and rain just need a… reintroduction,” Orpheus said.
Eurydice scoffed. “I think you should stop treating the rain like a person.”
Orpheus tilted his head. “Well, if you think about it in terms of the gods controlling it-“
“Orpheus.”
“What? I’m just saying,” Orpheus said, gazing wistfully out at the rain. Eurydice stared at him, a sense of dread building in her stomach.
“Oh, Gods.”
“Hm?”
“I know that look.”
“What look?”
“You’re gonna do something stupid, aren’t you?”
“…No.”
“Orpheus, I swear to Poseidon himself-“
“I’m not going to do anything,” Orpheus said, withdrawing his arm from Eurydice’s shoulders. “I’m just going to stand in the rain for a little bit.”
“Orpheus, that is something stupid-“
“I’ll be right back, it’s just to see if the perspective changes.”
Eurydice sighed. “Okay, fine, but if you wake up with a fever in the middle of the night, I am not going to take care of you.”
Orpheus laughed. “Relax, Eurydice, I won’t be out that long.”
He stood up, gingerly stepping off the porch and into the rain. Immediately, his face broke out in a grin, and he turned around to look at Eurydice, eyes sparkling like a little kid.
“This is definitely changing things!” he said excitedly, spreading his arms out and turning his face upward towards the rainfall. Eurydice hid her smile behind her hand, watching Orpheus spin around in the rain to some invisible beat.
Gods, why did she have to go and fall in love with an idiot?
At least he was a cute idiot.
“You should come out here!” Orpheus called out to her. “It’s really fun!”
Eurydice shook her head. “No thanks! I’m good!”
“Oh, come on, Eurydice, please?” Orpheus begged. “Just for a little bit?”
“Is it going to help with your thought process?”
“One hundred percent!” Orpheus said. Eurydice pursed her lips.
A little rain wouldn’t hurt, she supposed.
“Okay, okay, I’m coming,” Eurydice said, standing up. Orpheus immediately ran over to her, scooping her into his arms and pulling her into the rain before she could even process it.
Eurydice hadn’t been caught in a rainstorm like this for a few months, so the rain pelting her body was a bit of a shock. She clung tight to Orpheus, letting out a yelp of surprise.
“Isn’t it interesting?” Orpheus asked.
“That’s a good word for it,” Eurydice grumbled.
“C’mon, it’s not that bad,” Orpheus said, swaying Eurydice back and forth. “Just let yourself enjoy it.”
Eurydice closed her eyes, trying to understand exactly what Orpheus was feeling that was so amazing. However, all she could understand was that he liked being cold and soaked.
“How exactly is this helping you?” Eurydice asked, cracking open one eye. Orpheus shrugged, setting Eurydice down on her feet.
“I don’t know. There’s just something about… being in the rain that makes me… get it. The force, the power, the beauty, the rhythm, everything.”
“Okay. And why did you drag me out here?”
Orpheus grinned at her. “So I could do this.”
Quickly, Orpheus pulled Eurydice into him again and kissed her.
And then it clicked inside Eurydice’s head. Suddenly, all the things about the rain that used to be terrible were, in that moment, beautiful. The taste of Orpheus’ lips, the rain dripping off his hair onto her face, the damp fabric of his jacket…
It was almost… magic.
Orpheus pulled away, resting his forehead on Eurydice’s.
“And that,” he whispered. “Is a good idea for a song.”
Eurydice met his gaze. “What’s a good idea?”
Orpheus pushed a dripping lock of hair behind her ear. “You felt it, didn’t you?”
Eurydice smiled. “Kiss me again and I’ll tell you.”
Orpheus beamed back, doing what he was told without a second to think. Instantly, the magical feeling returned, and Eurydice sunk herself deeper into him, wrapping her arms around his neck.
She could’ve stayed there forever, with the rain pouring down on them.
It was funny, thinking about the rain now… she could barely feel it anymore. All she felt was him.
The two stayed in the kiss for a long time, past the moment when Eurydice was sure the rain would’ve stopped.
And then Orpheus broke it again, taking her hands in his.
“Well?” he asked.
Eurydice laughed. “Yeah, I felt it that time.”
“Good,” Orpheus said. “And if you were to give me three words to describe that-“
“You’re the poet, you give me the words,” Eurydice interrupted. Orpheus sighed, scrunching up his nose in thought.
“Breathtaking, gorgeous, unforgettable.”
Eurydice scoffed. “Aren’t you supposed to be describing the rain?”
“I never was,” Orpheus said. “I was just looking for more metaphors to describe you.”
Eurydice blinked at him. “You were comparing me to the… rain?”
“Yeah. You and the rain are a lot alike. Rough, yet soothing. Powerful, yet gentle-“
“You are the worst,” Eurydice groaned. “How could you compare me to something I hate?”
“Well, you don’t hate it anymore, do you?” Orpheus pointed out. Eurydice sighed.
“I only don’t hate it when you kiss me in it,” she said. Orpheus shrugged.
“It’s a start, at least,” he said, looking up at the sky. “We should probably go back inside.”
Eurydice nodded slowly. “Yeah. Dry off.”
“Eat breakfast.”
“Write your song.”
Orpheus tilted his head. “Or… we could not do that and catch our deaths staying out here.”
Eurydice smiled. “Y’know, I kinda like that plan better.”
“Great, because I do, too,” Orpheus agreed. “Now c’mere-“
Orpheus kissed Eurydice for a third time, this time as passionately as he could. Eurydice suppressed a laugh against his lips, running her fingers through his hair.
And realized maybe she liked rain after all.
Just a little bit, though.
Self-control is a myth so here y'all go

So... none of you said "no" to me rewriting wbwkf...
So here's a little snippet bc this is wildly different than what I usually write and I don't wanna throw you guys for a loop if I actually commit to it lol.
Rolls up to your askbox like a drive-thru:
Uhhh hey can I get a fluffy fix-it orphydice ficlet (or one-shot if you’re so inclined)? Thanks 😊
*muffled voice comes out of drive-thru speaker* Sure thing! Go ahead and drive up to the next window please. :)
“ come on, let’s get you cleaned up. “ For Hermes and Orpheus?
OKAY OKAY so remember that fic I abandoned a while back where Orpheus and Eurydice were childhood friends? This reminded of a scene I wanted to put into it, but I changed it up a little to fit the prompt.
Orphydice are about 15-16 in this.
Hey remember way back when when I used to write short fics that weren't connected to a larger story whatsoever? Those were fun.
Trying to fake not being in love with Orpheus was getting harder and harder every day. No matter how hard Eurydice tried to push him away, to shove everything down, Orpheus would just find some way to break her guard down.
She was in love with him, and it was getting impossible to deny.
But the worst part was that Orpheus knew. He knew she loved him. And he wanted her to love him, because he loved her, too.
He had even said it once, right before he left the bar to go back to his home on the edge of town.
"Bye, Eurydice," he had said. "I love you."
Eurydice froze at the sound. She had heard it so many times from other people, but the way he said it made it feel brand new. It felt genuine.
She stared at him, her mouth opening slightly. Orpheus' face carried no sign of regret for what he had said, his expression carrying only pure love.
Eurydice couldn't respond to that.
So she didn't, instead walking back into the bar and shutting herself in.
Orpheus never said I love you after that, his goodbyes containing "see you tomorrow" instead of that.
But Eurydice would be kidding herself if she said she didn't want to hear that again.
She was currently sitting on her windowsill on a bright Sunday morning in her room above the bar, holding the carnation Orpheus had given to her on the day they met. The flower had refused to wilt, even if it had been months since she had received it.
Gods, if only she wasn't such a headstrong idiot so she could tell him that she loved him back.
It would be a simple task. As he leaves for the night, she'd tell him she loved him, then he would run back to her and they'd kiss and everything would be fine after that.
But no. She had to give in to her thoughts telling her that it wouldn't work out, that he'd hurt her and leave her in a matter of months.
And besides, she was better off by herself.
But, she theorized, that it would be nice to allow herself to be loved for a little bit. If it didn't last, then it wouldn't last, and she could break it off before it went bad.
And Orpheus didn't look like the kind of guy who would hurt her. He was gentle whenever Eurydice allowed him to touch her, and even gentler that one time she let him kiss her hand.
Gods, just thinking about that made her blush.
She held the flower up to her nose, her lips brushing against the bud. She inhaled, letting the still-fresh scent wash over her.
She wondered if Orpheus smelled like anything similar to this…
Knock knock knock.
Eurydice jolted back to reality, glancing around for a place to put her flower.
"Who's there?" she called, throwing the flower on her nightstand.
"It's Orpheus!"
Eurydice's stomach did a backflip.
"Come in!"
The door opened, revealing Orpheus with a very excited grin on his face.
"Good morning!" he said, sitting down on the windowsill in front of her. "How are you doing today, beautiful?"
"Fine," Eurydice said, trying not to blush at the nickname. "How'd you get in here? We're closed on Sundays."
"Hermes gave the keys," Orpheus said, digging in his jacket pocket and pulling out the jangling ring of keys. "Anyway, I came to ask you something."
Eurydice clenched her fists. "What?" she asked, trying to sound casual.
"Do you wanna go out with me somewhere?"
Eurydice froze, just like she did when he told her he loved her.
"G-go out? Like-like on a date?"
Orpheus shrugged. "Yeah, I guess. Since the weather's getting warmer, I wanna head to this lake I used to go to when I was a kid, and it would be fun if you came."
Eurydice tilted her head, staring at the floor. "I-I don't know, Orpheus-"
"Oh, don't worry, I already made you a list of pros and cons," Orpheus said, reaching into his inside pocket and pulling out a small notebook. "I know how much you overthink things."
Eurydice frowned. "Thanks," she said dryly.
"You're welcome," Orpheus said teasingly, standing up and sitting back down on her bed. "So, pros: One, you get to go outside. Two, you get to wear that big hat Persephone got for you-"
Eurydice nodded, looking at said hat, which was perched on her vanity. She had been wanting to wear it out for a while now.
"-Three, you get to see me shirtless-"
"Orpheus."
"Oh, c'mon, you know you wanna," Orpheus said, grinning slyly at her. Eurydice huffed.
"I don't know where you get this idea that I'm madly in love with you-"
"Because you are," Orpheus said.
"Am not."
"Am too."
"Prove it."
"You're blushing."
"You would be blushing too if your friend decided that it would be a good thing for you to see them shirtless," Eurydice snapped.
"Okay, okay, fine," Orpheus said defensively. "I'll move to cons. One, there might be bugs. And that's all I can come up with."
"Two, I might get wet," Eurydice added, making Orpheus snort. "Gods, you are so immature-"
"I didn't even say anything!" Orpheus said. "You don't like water?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Cuz it's just… icky."
"You're icky," Orpheus said under his breath. "Well, you can just stay on the beach. Bring a book or something."
"You make it sound so appealing."
"Oh, c'mon, Eurydice, I just want to spend time with you!" Orpheus pleaded, moving back to the windowsill. "There's not going to be people there, it'll just be you and me. Nobody to watch us, or look at us, or anything. Just us."
Eurydice bit her lip, looking down at her lap. The thought of being alone with Orpheus scared her. What if she said something or did something that gave everything away? What if she let her guard down just for a minute, and then she'd find herself in a relationship that she wasn't ready for?
But she wanted that. She wanted the unexpected.
So maybe this was it.
"O-okay."
Orpheus pumped his fist. "Yes," he said triumphantly. "Grab your stuff, we leave in twenty."
The lake was just a couple minute's walk from Orpheus' house, and, true to his word, it was completely empty. The only thing that was there was a dock that no boat was attached to.
Orpheus grinned as the lake approached his field of vision, immediately breaking away from Eurydice's side and running onto the dock. Eurydice couldn't help but smile as she watched him slide off his shoes and dip his foot into the glistening blue water.
"It's not that bad!" Orpheus called out to her. "You sure you don't wanna hop in?"
"I'm sure!" Eurydice said, sitting down in a shady patch of sand and opening the book she brought along with her. "You go have fun!"
"Okay!" Orpheus said, raising his hands to the the neckline of his shirt and tugging it over his head. Eurydice attempted to glue her eyes to her book as he did so, but she found her gaze slowly travelling back up to look at him.
Orpheus was not the kind of guy that you would describe as muscular, and yet there was something about his bare chest that drew Eurydice in. She couldn't tell if it was the sun making his pale skin glow or that showing so much skin felt so intimate to her, but whatever it was made cheeks feel hot.
Orpheus looked away from the water and back at her, and noticing her gaze, starting flexing the small amount of muscle he had. Eurydice snorted.
"I wasn't looking at you!" she lied.
"Ah, don't kid yourself!" Orpheus called, moving back to the edge of the pier to make a running jump into the lake. He came up after a small splash, his hair spraying water droplets off of it.
Okay, time to start reading.
With great difficulty, Eurydice tore her eyes away from Orpheus and started reading her book, although she could barely focus on what it was saying. She occasionally looked back up at Orpheus, who was swimming laps around the small area of the lake that they had.
Eventually, during one part of her book that she had forced herself to get invested in, she saw him sit down beside her.
"What'cha reading?" Orpheus asked as Eurydice looked up at him. Water droplets ran down his chest, which was rising and falling heavily due to swimming.
"Nothing good," Eurydice said, trying to keep down her blush.
"Is there anything else you'd like to be doing instead?" Orpheus asked, leaning closer to her. Eurydice snapped her book shut and set it beside her, trying not to get it wet.
"It beats being in the water," she said. Orpheus groaned.
"Oh, come on, the water's nice!" he said, giving her a light shove. "You'll love it."
"I will not."
"Just dip yourself in there."
"No."
"Please?"
"No."
"Pretty please?"
"No."
"I'll cover your shift tomorrow."
Eurydice sighed. Oh, that would be nice.
"Fine," she said, putting her hat aside and standing up. "But I'll only go in for a second- hey!"
Without warning, Orpheus scooped her into his arms and started carrying her onto the dock.
"Orpheus! What are you doing?" Eurydice protested, attempting to squirm out of his grasp.
"I'm gonna throw you in!" Orpheus exclaimed. "You ready?"
"No!"
"One-"
"Orpheus-!"
"Two-"
"Let go of me-!"
"Three!"
Eurydice screamed as Orpheus lightly tossed her into the lake. Her body was immediately plunged into the freezing cold water, with it entering her nose and making her eyes burn. She broke the surface of the water as fast as she could, coughing as the water went down her throat. After a few seconds, she felt Orpheus grab her around her middle, pulling her into him.
"You okay?" he asked, wiping the water away from her eyes.
"I hate you," Eurydice choked out, burying her face into his bare shoulder. (Which, she hated to admit, felt very nice against her cheek.)
"I'm sorry," Orpheus laughed. "But, in my defense, you're supposed to hold your breath when you go into water."
"Very funny," Eurydice grumbled, closing her eyes as she continued coughing. Eventually, she stopped, and it was just her in his arms, feeling the water against her body.
"This is nice, isn't it?" Orpheus said suddenly.
"Mm?"
"Just the two of us out here," Orpheus said, pulling back so he could look her in the eyes. Eurydice frowned.
"You're not going to start flirting with me after you almost drowned me," she said.
"Hey, I'm sorry about that," Orpheus said, pushing a lock of hair away from her face. "What can I do to make it up to you?"
Eurydice sighed. "Well, you're already covering my shift, and that's good enough for me," she said, breaking away from him and swimming back to the dock. She pulled herself up and sat down on the edge, dangling her feet in the water while she wrung her hair out.
"Is it enough, though?" Orpheus asked, swimming over to her. "You seem mad at me."
"I'll stop being mad in a minute."
"No, no, you've been mad at me. At least, you seem like it."
Eurydice paused, raising an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
Orpheus shrugged. "I just feel like you've been upset with me the past few weeks. You've been snippy and grumpy and it doesn't feel like you wanna be around me anymore… Do I annoy you?"
"What? No!" Eurydice said quickly. "No, of course you don't! I just… there's a lot of things that are going on with me lately-"
"Is somebody giving you problems?"
"No, no… well, kinda," Eurydice admitted. "But it's nothing you can get involved in."
"Who is it?"
"Nobody you know."
"Somebody at the bar?"
"No."
"Somebody around town?"
"No."
"...You're not gonna tell me, are you?"
"Nope."
"Oh, come on, I don't like it when you're upset!" Orpheus said, placing a hand on her knee. "Just tell me who it is and I'll give them a lil' talk, okay? I won't fight them," he added after seeing Eurydice's mouth open.
"It'd be hard too," Eurydice said, her stomach twisting into knots.
"What, you think I can't take them?"
"Yes," Eurydice said. "...And because it's you."
Orpheus froze, looking up at her with wide eyes. He nodded slowly, drawing his hand away.
"What have I been doing?"
"N-nothing," Eurydice said, gripping the edge of the dock. "I-I just think… I think I might be catching feelings for you."
Orpheus tilted his head thoughtfully. "That's a bad thing?"
"I don't know," Eurydice admitted. "It scares me."
"Why does it scare you?"
"Because I'm worried that… it won't work out."
"Well, isn't that the fun of it? You'll never know if it'll work out if you don't try it."
Eurydice shook her head. "But what if it's a bad idea? What if I stop loving you or what if you hurt me or what if one of us dies or what if somebody takes me away from you or what if you cheat on me-"
As all of the what ifs tumbled out of Eurydice's mouth, Orpheus climbed onto the dock and pulled her onto his lap, eventually covering her mouth with his hand to shut her up.
"Eurydice-" he interrupted softly, resting his chin on her shoulder. "Take a breath."
Eurydice so, finding herself curling up into him.
"I understand that this is scary for you," Orpheus said, wrapping her hand in his. "But if this- if I'm something you want, I think you should go for it."
Eurydice looked over at him. "But you would want me too, right?"
Orpheus laughed. "I thought that was obvious," he said, nuzzling his nose into her cheek.
Eurydice blushed, and finally allowed herself to smile.
Of course he did.
"And, if I can address some of those things you brought up-" Orpheus added. "I would never, ever dream of hurting you. I love you too much for that."
Eurydice gave his hand a tight squeeze as those wonderful words washed over her again.
"You what?" she asked, desperate to hear them again.
"I love you."
"What?"
Orpheus rolled his eyes, catching on to her game. "I love you," he repeated, kissing her cheek.
"Say that again?" Eurydice gigged.
"I love you."
"One more time?"
"I. LOVE. YOU-"
Eurydice cut his last declaration off with a kiss, cupping his face with her hands. His lips felt cool and refreshing against hers, still wet from being in the water.
She couldn't have asked for anything better.
She broke away from the kiss, caressing his cheekbones as her face stretched into a grin.
"I love you, too," she whispered. Orpheus gave her a dazed smile before breaking away from her and swooning back into the lake, sticking his arms above the surface in triumph.
"You don't know how long I waited for that!" he said as he came back up for air, seizing Eurydice's hands. Eurydice laughed.
"What, the kiss or the I love you?"
"Both!" Orpheus exclaimed, seizing her around the waist and pulling her back down into the water. Eurydice squealed as the cold water touched her again, and she clung onto Orpheus as tightly as she could.
"Orpheus!" she yelled. Orpheus just laughed in response, spinning her around and pressing kiss after kiss against her face.
And, before long, Eurydice found herself laughing, too.
For the fluffy prompts: sleepy cuddles w/ orphydice?
