Arthur rises from the dead today and he and Merlin have to decide if they are going to challenge Charles III for the throne

This is such a fun idea and I'm going to make it fluffy cracky lol :D

I mean... I imagine if anyone were to, in the modern world, somehow break into Buckingham Palace/Windsor/wherever and claim to be the real King Arthur back to take his throne, they would immediately, and very quietly, be sectioned. Even if they had a convincing/genuine medieval sword/armour/etc, then... it's not like anyone would believe them?? Even if Arthur managed to get super up to date on the modern world, he'd still be no match for a bunch of security agents, soldiers, Beefeaters, etc, who would tackle him to the floor rather viciously if he got anywhere near any of the Royal Family.

Plus... Britain isn't split up the same way as it was before; England wasn't England back then, Wales wasn't Wales back then, etc. So what would Arthur actually be claiming? Camelot doesn't exist anymore, the world as he knew doesn't exist anymore. That's completely ignoring the fact that Parliament, the UN, NATO, the Geneva Convention, etc all exist now. Huge governing bodies/laws that sort of... supersede the throne? Like yeah, the monarchy has a lot of money and power, but it's not like they can declare war out of the blue, or have complete financial control over the country, or force people to work in their households. Even on the off chance Merlin and Arthur could somehow convince the general public that they were legit... what's next?? Certain countries would call England/Britain crazy and use it as an excuse to invade/takeover, they'd be overruled, not to speak of the fact that the Royal Family kind of has a cult following, and anyone who ousted them, no matter how deserving, would be loathed world-wide.

I feel like they don't even question it, they don't even consider mounting some sort of coup, because the world is just not the same and it wouldn't achieve anything. Instead, they go for The Old Guard/Six Underground sort of thing (if you haven't seen them, they're on Netflix, watch immediately, they're some of my fave movies ever), in that they keep it super low-key whilst they save the world. They go to war-torn territories and help out before disappearing, mysteriously enough with no one remembering quite what their names/faces were. They find the most evil motherucker they can, and they deal with them, with barely anyone the wiser. But between that, between saving the world, they just... exist. Merlin takes Arthur all over the world to show him his favourite places, food, monuments, hotels, people, sunsets. They grow veg in their garden and they have dogs and cats and birds and squirrels and foxes. Merlin talks Arthur through every single antique he has in his collection and they just... live, you know??

Arthur loved his kingdom, he loved his people, and he loved serving them, but his kingdom, his people, the need for his servitude, is all gone now. So he gets to just... be a person. Just a person, no more important than anyone else. I honestly believe that that's all he's ever wanted. The amount of love and respect Arthur had for his Kingdom... I think it crippled him, in the end, because he very rarely got to grow in the way he deserved to grow, and he very rarely got what he deserved. It's that horrible paradox of, if he weren't a King, he'd have made a wonderful King, but being a King, made he less aware of what needed to be done as King. If that makes any sense at all. Let me know😅

maybe i’m merthur trash but hear me out

so arthur comes back. we’ve heard the iterations of that and i can’t really write anything that hasn’t been done so let’s skip to the good part

for a moment they’re just looking at each other. merlin’s breathing heavily, his hands are shaking, he can’t take his eyes off arthur. arthur’s soaking wet, he’s got hair in his face, he’s crying. so is merlin. neither of them can bring themselves to speak. like maybe if they say something, it’ll all fall apart and they’ll lose each other all over again. but then arthur’s gaze softens and merlin realizes this is genuine. and just like that, merlin grabs his face in his hands, pulling him in, almost gently, like he’s afraid he’ll break him. and then they’re kissing. but even with his eyes closed, arthur can feel the wind start to pick up so he pulls back to see the air circling around the two of them, in the eye of their own personal hurricane. a flower petal lands ever-so-gently on arthur’s head and he turns back to merlin, their noses brushing slightly. merlin’s just grinning sheepishly, uttering a soft sorry. but before he can say anything else arthur is kissing him again and he doesn’t even care anymore because it’s him. he’s here. he’s real.

Imagine modern day merthur where Merlin takes Arthur to his first Christmas light show and they just walk around and hold hands in Arthur’s sweater pocket while they drink hot chocolate as the snow lightly falls down on them. Imagine Merlin being all excited to show Arthur his favorite shops during the Christmas holiday and Arthur just smiles at how Merlin is all enthusiastic to make this Christmas the best for Arthur since he had risen. What if Merlin drags Arthur to a pond to show Arthur how to ice skate and Arthur is obviously nervous but when he falls down on his arse Merlin just laughs at him so it causes his embarrassment to skyrocket but his love for Merlin to increase and after Arthur falls he gets back at Merlin for laughing by pulling Merlin down with him and they just laugh the night away. What if when they get back to their flat they open up presents and Merlin gives Arthur a photo book of pictures of Merlin and build through the ages where Arthur couldn’t be there for?? And Arthur actually tries to make a meal for Merlin and for a present he gives Merlin his moms sigil.

fellas!!! sit down and let me tell y’all about something i was thinking about last night. so let’s take our boy merlin after arthur,,y’know,, dies. so we can assume merlin adapts, spends time in the modern era, hopefully learns to cope to cope. hundreds and thousands of years pass.

and then arthur comes back.

now there’s essentially two options for what arthur’s experience was like.

option one: time passed for arthur as well

- he spent all that time in an afterlife of some sort. and spent it without merlin.

- is he with the other people they lost? mithian, uther, lancelot, etc?

- was he in heaven for all that time? or in some sort of limbo?

- but eventually he rises and at first he doesn’t believe it. thinks he’s finally gone crazy. but he sees merlin and just like that, everything seems to fall into place and he’s hugging merlin before he can even register it

- they’ve both been missing each other for an eternity, and have an vague idea of the struggles each of them went through

option two: it’s like he died yesterday.

- he doesn’t remember anything after dying. he remembers closing his eyes and a couple seconds later he opened them and he was underwater. just started swimming.

- for the life of him he can’t understand why he’s just crawled out of a lake and why merlin looks so torn up. he’s fine. he remembers getting stabbed and merlin’s confession but he clearly,,,,isn’t dead,,so what’s with the drama

- and merlin’s just avoiding the questions because he knows it’s going to break arthur’s heart. to tell him that almost everyone he’s ever loved had died many years ago and he’s been gone for decades and centuries

like generally those are the two options,,he doesn’t remember being dead or he does,,and neither are really ideal

I have yet to read a fic where Arthur returns and Merlin is just pissed at him either for making him wait or he's finally happy or maybe he has kids and Arthur's return means they might grow up in Albion's most bloody and horrible war so he either socks him right in the face or ignores him or both until Arthur almost gets hit with a car
