@laurielra Laurie Rollins Anderson captured my segment at the February 22, 2016 Starts Here! Reading. Hear pieces from I WANT YOUR TAN, new work, and my thoughts on Kesha + Sylvia Plath, and process.
A Yolky Phemys!
it made zero sense for me to drive all the way from nashville to atlanta just to hang out for the night, but i am so glad i did. i not only got to catch up with a favorite friend of 20+ years, but i crammed so much good food in my face i wasn’t sure i would ever be able to stand up again. aka i won at atlanta!
first, we headed to white oak, which i know of via the esteemed chef-and-man-behind-many-other-cool-things ben vaughn. (not the musician, even though i will always accidentally click on his website first. you win at seo, musician ben vaughn!)
we had dinner plans, so we ate dessert as an appetizer. and it. was. awesome:

(that’s fried blueberry pie and corn bread pudding with candied popcorn.)
then we headed to the famous mary mac’s. within one bite of smothered chicken i knew this spot has been around for 70+ years for very good reason. the hundreds of famous person pictures on the wall told us that the dalai lama is also a fan, so i mean just go there sometime:

in related news, my friend is in a very cool performance art troupe called nameless city. they spin fire among other completely mesmerizing things. (!!!!!)
unfortunately i had to head out at about 7am the next morning to begin a long trek to the nyc-area for a wedding, but there were some additional stops along the way that also helped make the trip well worth it…
1. on the way to atlanta i got very hangry so at the suggestion of aforementioned mr. vaughn, i stopped in knoxville, tennessee for a sausage, egg and cheese at aretha frankensteins. it’s a zombie-themed southern restaurant, with a touch of rock and roll mixed in. aka this place is perfect:
#gallery-0-5 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-5 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
2. after atlanta, my original plan was to stop by athens, because OF COURSE! i am a huge music nerd. but i realized the vibe i wanted to pick up wasn’t really going to be there when i was passing through at 8am, so instead i made a quick lunch stop in asheville, north carolina. by quick, i mean i put on my running clothes and literally ran around the city to sightsee like a total effing lunatic. but i did make time for an egg cream at woolworth’s soda fountain counter because ALWAYS. MAKE. TIME. FOR. EGG. CREAMS:
#gallery-0-6 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-6 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-6 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-6 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
3. lucky me, after atlanta and asheville i was spending the night with some of my oldest friends (also my very best friend’s mom and stepfather) in washington, dc. i was greeted with a glass of champagne and a beautiful 3-course meal, largely consisting of one of my favorite ingredients, bacon. (they did that on purpose. i told you, lucky me!)
homemade pasta carbonara w/ beautifully cooked chicken, blistered tomatoes and bacon green beans, then chocolate bread pudding w/ bourbon caramel sauce.
4. after my rich night in dc, i headed north to baltimore to enjoy the fortune of having breakfast with someone i always hoped to share a meal with: wonderland kitchen. she is talented in too many ways to count, and beautiful inside and out. (i don’t even care how corny it is that that rhymed.) we went to the charming artifact coffee, and i had vegetables for breakfast because, well, you see above what i had been eating:
i know what you’re thinking so i now grant you a phew! because that’s it for this post.
but no #jilleatsamerica post is complete without a soundtrack, so here’s one of my favorite songs in the whole wide world. it’s from atlanta-based musician bradford cox, here performing under the moniker atlas sound (with laetitia sadder from stereolab). enjoy:
#jilleatsamerica: atlanta (with special guests knoxville + ashville + dc + baltimore) it made zero sense for me to drive all the way from nashville to atlanta just to hang out for the night, but i am so glad i did.
A cafe in Baltimore (Hampden area), serving Counter Culture coffee. We visited the cafe in late November 2014. We were impressed with their offering of pour over coffee (including Hario V60, and Chemex) and French Press coffee, among other options, including Japanese iced coffee.
