I just started Artifical Condition, and I am obsessed with the fact that Murderbot immediately accommodates for ART when they watch Worldhoppers together. It lets ART pause to process the death of a main character, rewatches an episode with it three times when ART is relieved that the character is actually not dead and agrees to watch the final episode of that storyline by playing it two minutes at a time because ART got scared of the ship in Worldhoppers being catastrophically damaged and the crew being killed.

It even puts up a content filter because ART got so upset about the next media they watched being inspired by a real story of a transport being badly damaged and parts of the crew being killed.

Murderbot cares so much, even though it knew ART for only a few cycles at that point.

It’s so interesting that Murderbot calls Tapan Rami and Mari kids and sits down on its heels to walk them through the realization that someone wants them dead. Like we know that it can’t judge ages super well but it calls them kids. I feel like it also probably doesn’t have much of a frame of reference for kids before Preservation so where is this observation coming from? I just relistened to Artifical Condition for like the 9th time and the line where it kneels down and sits back on its heels on the floor in front of them to help them process stuck with me so much this time around. It’s first clients it chose who are so young and naive and it just wants to protect them even tho the whole reason it came here was to see if it was a danger to other people

At first I didn't understand why Murderbot is so hard on itself at the end of Artifical Condition. All of its clients are alive, the bad guys are punished, and it got the data! A win all around. But that's only from a story/hero perspective.

Murderbot is Security. If it did its job completely right, there would be no fights or danger to its clients. It arguably makes 3 huge mistakes.

Allows them to go to the obviously fake and dangerous meeting.

Doesn't confirm that its clients leave the dangerous area.

Has one of its clients get kidnapped and hurt.

And the biggest hit to Murderbot is that it does a "half-assed" job. It doesn't have a choice, its a slave, its scared and bored and it does the bare minimum.

But now it has a choice, its getting paid, nothing says it has to take this job, and its treated with respect. But its still doing the half-assed version of its job? Still just following orders even after leaving to find itself? It needs to take responsibility because there's no cheap company to blame everything on. There's no silly rules keeping it locked in place.

It needs to take that responsibility on itself because there is nothing else to blame.

I just finished reading Artificial Condition. I ate through it in 2 hours and walked out of the library with a stack of the rest of them.

This is how I envisioned Murderbot at the end of the book I love it so much. I really love seeing and reading how other people have imagined MB, I think it is fun to see what aspects of ourselves can be projected onto a protagonist who is not solidly described. I code MB more on the masculine side of androgynous because that is what I relate to as well as the TV series being my first exposure. But I don’t think of Skarsgard as the book MB. The book MB looks like this to me.

ahh!!! season two for Murderbot has been confirmed. here is some thoughts on potential adaptation routes for artificial condition as a book reader.

i was thinking about this last night before the news came out, but I wonder how they would portray ART in a live action format. ART is such an intangible presence imo, and I feel like it would be easier to portray in animation which can be more abstract.

But since the show is adapted to live action, I have some potential theories / ideas!

First of all, if the adaptation is intentionally expanding the story outside of just mb's perspective, how will ART and its perception of the world be brought into the story? I would love to see shots done entirely through its camera perspectives (that it doesn't tell mb about), or augmented camera feeds as it rides mb's own network in the field. I feel like an emphasis / expansion of the feed will be necessary for s2 overall, with ART engaging with mb primarily digitally in the books.

As far is how ART itself is portrayed, I really want it to stay abstract. As much as I love star treks holographic doctors, I feel like ART is more of a HAL presence. I want a cinematic shorthand where we know its there without necessarily a physically manifested presence. Obviously, voice acting would play a huge part in that. If there is a physical representation, like the teaching aid versions of ART we see in fanart sometimes, I would love for there to be a distinction between teaching tool ART and ART's more... omniscient presence.

Vibes? Preferable consistently threatening. I truly want to believe it would kill a man, because it would. But, then we get to snap between the many assumptions and established facts mb learns about ART. First, bot pilot -> then teaching vessel -> immeasurable threat -> friend -> armed and ready to kill -> therapist.

ART is truly multifaceted <3

Final thought:

One thing that I’ve been returning to recently is this exchange between Murderbot and ART:

Picking up on my reaction, ART said, What does it want?

To kill all the humans, I answered.

I could feel ART metaphorically clutch its function. If there were no humans, there would be no crew to protect and no reason to do research and fill its databases. It said, That is irrational.

I know, I said, if the humans were dead, who would make the media? It was so outrageous, it sounded like something a human would say.

Huh.

This suggests that AIs cannot make media

But in System Collapse Murderbot and ART collaborate (with humans admittedly) to create the sales pitch I mean fact filled video for the colonists (sorry I think Leonide took over my account for a moment there)

So AIs can create what is fundamentally media? Is it just NOT DONE in the Murderbot Universe? Outlawed?

Am I reading too much into a throw away line on the second book—or is this Martha Wells’ little joke? The Murderbot Universe may have indentured slavery and corporatocratic rule—but at least they’ve cracked down on AI generated art…
