Artist notes for Alt Hao x Zeke Galaxy Pin Up piece —
Jesuuuuusssss Christ ahhhh.
First of all, huge shout out to @thornedwitch-art for helping me out with my fumbling with hands and suggested edits. It really really helped!!! Thank you!
Below is “before and after” the suggested edits for the original sketch.
I won’t traumatise the internet with my first sketch attempt, Hao did not come out very flattering at first.
I then went back in and decided where Zeke was going to be transparent so I could visualise the end result.
The background is hugely inspired by “Look My Way” from Helluva Boss. In fact a lot of my galaxy imagery is inspired by this sequence. This sequence/song is gorgeous, I highly recommend it to anyone. It was my gateway into the Hellaverse!! I adore Stolas and Blitz. I will most likely draw something for them one day.
Tools: Procreate, Apple Pencil, iPad Pro.
Brushes: I only used Procreate default brushes. Studio Pen for line art, with stability turned up to 80%. Technical Pen for block colour. Medium air brush. Soft airbrush. Nebula brush for the galaxy effect. Procreate Pencil to sketch. Flare brush for the stars.
I didn’t use a reference for this one. Just a body model that I sketched over again and again. I created this model originally and it evolved from there:
I achieved the effect by overlapping the Nebula brush with different hues and using a clipping mask on all the blocked sections.
Final comments:
I think this galaxy look has become something of a solid style of mine. I plan to reuse some of the same effects for the Vol 3 cover and apply them to Alt Hao/Zeke, Yohsuke and the background.
My confidence with experimenting with colour splashes, changing hues and saturation, lighting and shading is growing exponentially.
I still need A LOT more anatomy and hands practice.
And I am so so so sloooow. This piece took approximately 3 weeks. I’m not sure how many hours but I worked on it almost every day.
I’m really proud of this one. But I know it’s a slippery slope from here. This is now my second ever NSFW piece. I think it’s a bit like getting a tattoo. It’s addictive.
This ended up being all over the place ahahah. Oh well.
