28.2.1019// Studying the Sonnet and its reception in the German literature. I tried to exercise the theory, translating the meta-critical sonnet by Robert Gerhard „ Document of a critique of the most known Italian poetry form” ( germ. “ Materialien zu einer Kritik der bekanntesten Gedichtform italienischen Ursprungs“, 1981). I enjoyed a lot building the sonnet structure:
Especially adapting the German system (counting mainly the stressed syllables in a verse ) to the Italian one (counting the “quantity” of syllables in a verse ) was challenging. I couldn´t build hendecasyllables but I had to use in the first quatrain and in the tercets verses with 13 syllables and verses with 14 syllables in the middle quatrain. I could almost reproduce the rhymes according to the sonnet schema ABAB CDCD EFE FAA ( for the verses 2,4 and 6,8 I had to use imperfect rhymes or assonances). And I had a lot of fun because I found very cool translating a sonnet that criticizes the sonnet form also with rude and vulgar language. (yes, I´m strange and quite a nerd)
The first week of my MFA course has been so intense that I’ve bought three new succulents as a coping mechanism.
@gradblr and any frens who would like to chime in
i’m thinking about getting a smartphone for taking photos while doing archival/library research without connecting it to a plan yet. i love having a flip phone and being a little hard to reach, but i just got to this library and fuck, being able to photograph pages would be SO helpful and speedy rn. the new google pixel is $400, the same price as canon’s low-end point and shoot, but with this, i could use my drive account and just keep my files all together online. like, i enjoy the idea of portability and the ability to connect to my drive where i keep all of my digital working files. literally this would be a tiny camera plus google drive. this makes sense, right?????
Sunday readings
loving the Zadie Smith book (Feel Free) hopefully tomorrow i’ll write more about it.... and also reading for my seminar on Contemporary Polytheism... and messing the copies with my red pencil
“She felt very young; at the same time unspeakable aged. She sliced like a knife through everything; at the same time was outside, looking on. She had a perpetual sense, as she watched the taxi cabs, of being out, out, far out to sea and alone; she always had the feeling that it was very, very dangerous to live even one day.”
