Can we talk about my love and adoration for @ashleywinsteadbooks a minute?? I swear everything she writes is absolute perfection. First we read IN MY DREAMS I HOLD A KNIFE last fall for #getthrilledbuddyreads, which was perfection. Then when I saw she had a romance coming out I will readily admit I was a little skeptical, because how hard must it be to go from a twisty, dark thriller to a rom-com?? But I never should've doubted her (I'm sorry Ashley!) -- because FOOL ME ONCE?! It's 💫perfection💫! The chemistry, the sexual tension, the steaminess, the banter -- all those normal rom-com bits are great. But then you add in the political setting (I'm a politics junkie) and the fact that our heroine, just like in IMDIHAK, is what folks often disparagingly call an "unlikeable female character" but which I affectionately call "f*cking reality because women, like all humans, are flawed" -- these things just lift it to the level of an *incredible* book for me. 🌸 BOOK FEATURE 🌸 Ever since we read IN MY DREAMS I HOLD A KNIFE for #getthrilledbuddyreads and then had our Zoom discussion with @ashleywinsteadbooks (who is super sweet and fun to talk to!), I have been eagerly awaiting her next books. In August we'll get Ashley's next thriller, THE LAST HOUSEWIFE, but this week we were all blessed with the release of her first rom-com, FOOL ME ONCE. It's also the April pick for the Book Therapy book club with @poetry.and.plot.twists and @thebookish.mama, which is perfect since I'm so excited to read this one! The book arrived on the same day as my new book sleeve that I got from @funnybookspt, which I absolutely love 😍 The two were so perfect together, I had to feature them as one! Seriously, the pink flowers on the sleeve almost perfectly match the pink flowers on the book. You can swipe to see the sleeve on its own. ✂️ BOOK REVIEW ✂️ This was our #getthrilledbuddyreads read for September, and boy was it ever perfect for the return-to-campus time! I absolutely loved this debut thriller from @ashleywinsteadbooks, and felt like I was back on the campus of Duke University the whole time I read (not that we ever had a murder, nor did I hang out with a bunch of possible murderers, but otherwise... 😂). This book is an excellent examination of privilege as well as sociopathy, and while some people in our group figured out the killer before the big reveal, I personally hadn't. We also had *the most excellent* discussion over Zoom with Ashley, who was kind enough to share a Friday evening with us! (Thanks to @torrie_reads, who had the guts to ask her 🙌🏼) Our discussion of the "unlikeable female character" still sticks with me; that whole idea has long been a burr for me, and it's exactly what Ashley was trying to examine with this book. Anyway, I LOVED THIS, and I highly recommend it to any thriller/mystery fan!!
