Fan Demographic Chart for My OCs
This chart is based on the reactions I've received from my Japanese fans.
Note: If I included my international audience as well, I think the chart would probably look a bit different.
Details are as follows
【Tatsumori】
After I released Tatsumori's comics, I gained a lot of Japanese gay followers. I've also had quite a few younger fans tell me that Tatsumori is their favorite character.
Because of that, I see him as a character who has particularly strong appeal among men and younger audiences.
【Rintaro】
Rintaro is actually an interesting case. Surprisingly, he has relatively few male fans, and in my popularity polls he almost always ranked last.
According to my X (Twitter) analytics, about 90% of my followers are male, so I think Rintaro simply isn't a character who appeals strongly to that audience. On the other hand, he has a small but strong following among female readers.
I'm not sure about the average age of his fans, so I placed him roughly halfway between younger and adult audiences.
【Shun】
Shun was especially popular among younger gay readers.
How popular was he? Well, when I ended one of his comics without an intimate scene, I actually received complaints because the comic ended without a more intimate scene.
Normally, nobody complains about how my stories end, but with Shun, there were surprisingly many readers who wanted to see a more romantic moment featuring him.
He also has a fair number of female fans, so I placed him where he is on the chart.
【Ryusei (Real name: Kim Yongbyol / 김영별)】
Ryusei is the only my character with longer hair instead of a short hairstyle.
Although he's Korean, he doesn't have black hair—he dyes it—and I think his appearance, along with the popularity of Korean pop culture, has made him especially popular with Japanese women.
After I started drawing comics featuring him, the number of female readers following my work increased significantly.
Because of that, I'd say Ryusei's fanbase is almost entirely female.
【Masa】
Now for Masa.
Because of his rather old-fashioned, traditional "head of the household" personality, younger readers tend to be less interested in him.
At the same time, that classic personality seems to resonate more with adult readers, so he has fairly strong appeal among that audience.
He's also especially popular with gay men, so I placed him closer to the male side of the chart.
Female readers probably see him as a stubborn or self-centered guy. 😂
Even so, he has a loyal and strong fanbase.
【Jack Johnson】
Jack doesn't lean strongly toward any one demographic. My impression is that his fanbase is spread fairly evenly across all groups.
He's the kind of character who appeals to a very broad audience. Since his personality isn't particularly extreme or polarizing, I think people of all ages and genders find him approachable. He comes across as emotionally mature and well-balanced, which makes him easy to like.
I designed Jack to embody many of the qualities I like about Americans: he's friendly, respects individuality, and has a strong sense of justice. From what I've seen, those are the traits that many readers appreciate most about him.
