Ava all alone in her new beginning. The only one she has suddenly leaving.

Soto being fully scared and trying to be brave and keep going in front of Morgan…

The Romanticization of Roman: Or Why High Potential Fans Don't Care About Roman Anymore

So, I have seen some discussions around about Roman and the fans (me included) not caring about the case anymore and wanting it to be over as soon as possible because it's getting tiring and too dragged out. I have also seen a lot of discussions about the why this is happening. Has the situation been handled badly by the show? Does the case not make any sense? Have other fandoms disappointed us way too many times already? Or are the theories getting us too excited and the show is not delivering? Among others.

I agree with many of these and it might be a combination of all these and more so here's my take on it. I hope you enjoy!

Show, Don’t Tell.

How many times have we heard that phrase? Probably way too many times if you're a writer (like me) but the thing is... it actually works!

High Potential fans don't care about Roman. For the audience, Roman is just a name, not a person. We don't even know how he looks like. High Potential fans care about the people who care about Roman. We want Roman to be found because we want Morgan and Ava (and now Arthur too) to get answers, not because we want Roman back.

We don't care about Roman because of WHO he is. We care about Roman because of WHAT he is. We know Roman is a father. We know Roman was a partner. We know Roman was a friend, a brother. That's WHAT Roman is to others, not who he is as a person or who he is to us. The audience hasn't formed their own thoughts and opinions about Roman because we haven't SEEN Roman. The audience doesn't know who he is as a person, we're going into this blind.

We have been TOLD Roman was a good father and that he loved Ava and was very excited to have her but we haven't seen Roman with her so we don't actually know if this is true or not because that's just Morgan's take on the situation, not our take. We have been TOLD Roman loved Morgan and supported her and that they understood each other in their own way, it was the 3 of them against the world. But again, Morgan's (or others) take on the situation, not ours. We have been TOLD that Roman was a great friend/brother to Arthur but we haven't seen it.

We know that sometimes when someone we love gets taken away from us (especially in a very abrupt and traumatic way) they become saints in our minds. We romanticize them. So there's a little part of us that might have the sneaking suspicion that Roman has been romanticized by Morgan and Arthur. Because nobody's perfect, right?

Now, think about everything we have been told about Roman and then try to put flashback scenes on top of that. Morgan tells Ava how excited Roman was to have her: we flash back to him helping a pregnant Morgan or him holding Ava for the very first time. Playing with her, singing to her, talking to Morgan's belly, something. We are told that Roman loved Morgan and they were like partners in crime? Or that he helped Arthur so many times? Put some flashbacks over that. Heck, you could even picture Selena finding the diapers while going through the evidence. Roman painting, Roman working for the FBI. Anything!

That's more impactful! Not only we would have a face to put to the name, we would have an opportunity to form our own thoughts and opinions on him. He would go from just Roman the father, brother, partner, artist, informant, friend etcetera to just Roman.

Even a vague flashback to the day Roman disappeared will put us more in the moment instead of just floating over the story. Roman might be an anchor to the story, a cornerstone. But not to the audience. Them going out of their way to hide Roman from us has made more damage than good.

If you want to see a (current) show handling the loss of a character in a slightly better way I'm gonna recommend Hulu's Paradise (the first season) and AppleTV's Shrinking (the whole show). The way they handled Cal and Tia in those shows was amazing. We weren't just TOLD who Cal and Tia were and why we should care. They SHOWED us who they were and allowed us to form our own thoughts and opinions on them. Kudos to the writers!

high potentional 2x14 thoughts (spoilers)

hands down my favorite episode. a daphne centric ep, i been waiting for this one TURN IT UP! i love the strangers on a train reference

seeing daphne lead the ep makes me miss javicia in batwoman, she’s such an amazing actress. you guys need to tune in, it was truly an amazing show and showcases her acting soooo well, i hope we get more of these in the future. that’s really my shaylaaaa. + everyone being so cute and excited about her leading her first case that’s FAMILYYYYYYY

i love dottie and daphnes relationship, yk (pseudo) mothers and daughters…it’s complicated even if you both mean well. i’m glad dottie didn’t die because her and daphne were able to fix their relationship and dottie saying daphne is a light she doesn’t want dimmed, ill cry.

lowkey…i kinda ship selena and arthur. idk i see a vision, if it happens, fun. if not idgaf. i hope we get a soto episode soon.

this eyeliner on morgan…CHEF’S KISS. and her second outfit with the purple and fur, one of my favorites truly.

um…i hope they dont let that redhead become a cop, in fact they should fire him or get him some help to control his emotions cause the last thing a police force needs is a volatile cop who can’t his emotions like oh that’s…ABSOLUTELY NOT

the parallel and moment between daphne and ava is so sweet, i’m glad we got to see it. i’m sooo happy they didn’t have morgan give ava some talk that even though it would’ve been coming from the sweetest, most genuine place, it would’ve fallen flat because morgan doesn’t understand and she never will and that’s okay. and morgan trusting daphne with ava is what really shows how good of a mom she is. and i love the advice daphne gave ava, i hope we get more of these little moments.

chloe has gotten so big ?? and elliot using his drone across from school so it’s a technicality is so funny.

evil white man who kidnapped roman (i legit forgot his name) is scared of a her…interesting. in the french version, roman and morganne’s mom always fought and she was the reason he left, so i wonder if our introduction to morgan’s mom (cause as far as i know, they don’t mention her) will be her as some criminal or something. we’ll see

i was hoping we would see more daph and oz because it was a daph ep but alas, i was disappointed. like i love all the morgan daph moments we get, but still I WANT DAPHODIL!!!

the scene of morgan in the office after dark is very reminiscent to the pilot and i love it sm.

no morgadec this ep and i’m actually glad because i loved the focused being on daphne. and all shows are told through character pov (whether they want it that way or not) and we usually see morgan’s hence all the morgadec, but ofc in this one and other character centric eps, we won’t get them which is fine with me. also, soto has been wearing a wig and it’s been distracting me bc it’s good lace but you can tell but also because judy reyes has a widow’s peak and her wig doesn’t so it immediately made me go ?????

I’d really like a High Potential episode where we get Ava and Ludo bonding.

Like I know she obviously wants to know more about Roman and I’m looking forward to seeing how her relationship develops with him once they actually find him, but for the longest time Ludo was practically her father, so I’d love to see them in a subplot.

I want to see them spend a day together, maybe an episode where Ludo is distracting Ava from being worried whilst Morgan is on a Roman centric case and they both reassure each other that even once Roman is found, things don’t have to change between them and Ava will still have Ludo in her life and that he loves her just as much as he does Elliot and Chloe.
