The emotions portrayed in the song are about regret. about heartbreak. about pain. about love. Maybe seeking forgiveness from the other person, because he knows for sure, he can never forgive himself for the choices he made. It is the most painful, nagging feeling in the world, when you know you ruined your one chance at true happiness all by yourself. Like stabbing a knife in your own heart.

But it doesn't really matter now, does it? Whether it was a thoughtful planned out decision or just acting on the wrong impulse. It's not gonna make much of a difference to the broken hearts. We do hope it's the later though.
Because if not, then it's the saddest thing in the world. It would mean you changed Steve Rogers. Not for better or worse. Just changed. Became another cold-hearted stranger.
