L, unlike Beyond, sounded oddly emotional. It wasn't the love curse. He genuinely cared for Beyond, and he blatantly had double standards when it came to his brother. That was how he kept Beyond alive in prison, and how he didn't end with multiple death sentences over his head. L purposefully messed with the outcome, because that was the type of crime he would commit in order to keep Beyond safe.
But Beyond still found ways to hurt him, as he already know.
That smile was one of them.
"...Don't promise things you can't keep", L muttered, his already unexpressive eyes becoming even more cold and dark. "I've already accepted the outcome of this game. I either live or die. If I do, I want it to be a honorable death — the only honorable thing on my life, at least."

Going out of the headquarters was easy. With everyone worried about their injuries, he could easily escape from there--well, if going out through the front door could be called "escape".
He would have thought that was funny, if the situation wasn't that bad.
First, he had to convince Watari. He wanted to tell him about what he was about to do, but he knew the old man would worry.
Lying to Watari wasn't something he liked to do, but he had to do it anyway.
As soon as he arrived, he ran off of the car and sprinted towards the cemetery, not even trying to look calm. It didn't matter at this point.

All of them were reunited on that room, that L has deemed "safe enough" for them. Sayu was concealed into another one, with Yagami Soichiro to distract her, alongside her mother. The members of the Japanese Task Force were confused by this secret meeting that involved only L, his successors, the Yagami twins and the ability users, but they had to trust L again about this being important.
"Beyond Birthday knew that Kira would target him. He somehow avoided Kira's power, faked his own death and escaped when they thought they were disposing of his body. Now, he's threatening Yagami Sayu and her brothers so he can mess with me. That's all we have for now about the ongoing situation."
His voice was calm, his eyes were cold, but it was clear that he was terrified. Something about the way his hand wouldn't stop shaking, how he couldn't look anyone in the eyes like he normally did, how his posture was even more curved, how he was walking around the room nervously without a single pause... All screamed "panic".
"Mello, since you've written about Beyond before, tell us about the information we have about him and his past. The newbies need to be informed, now."
