On Ages and Aging in the Netherworld

Firstly let me start by saying I'm not here for shipping discourse.

I genuinely don't care if Ameri is 170 in human years and only looks 17. The same for Clara and Azz, Iruma's other primary ships and LIs.

I do not see Iruma being shipped with any of the teenaged demons as problematic at all.

SPOILERS FOR CHAPTERS 428 TO 438 BELOW (LONG POST WARING)

Iruma is the only character to have an explicitly stated age. Starting at 14 and turning 15 during the series.

We learn that most demons only celebrate their birthday once typically when they're younger. It's never stated during Iruma's celebration what age he's turning.

To the other misfits he's just having a birthday as a "teenager".

We know that demons can hundreds of hears even going so high as even over a thousand years. Grandpa Sullivan is implied to be over one thousand years old given that's how long The Demon King has been missing and he served The Demon King when in his, Sulivan's, relative thirties or forties judging by appearances. Some other characters are shown or otherwise stated to be around the same age as Sulivan such as the other two Greats, and Derkila's close friend Amduscias. Levi of the Three Greats is accused by the other two of using magic to keep herself looking young, one can only assume Amduscias is doing something similar. This leaves us with three to four demons who are over one thousand but look and act to be roughly in their sixties.

Kalego and the rest of the teaching staff typically look to be in their thirties and forties, with some of the younger ones looking to be in their twenties like Robin. Personally I've always seen Kalego to be around 33 to 35 in appearance.

We've never gotten any solid hits to how old he is in years, but I've always assumed that he was at least over 100, and this gets messy with what we've learned over the last 5-10 chapters.

To refresh some surrounding context, Kalego when he was going to Babyls as a student was in the same year as Shichiro (yes I'm on a first name bases with him), and in the year directly below Opera.

Now, in the continuing flashback centering on Ameri's father Henri we've learned more about his past and Ameri's mother, how they met and how she came to be born.

During the protracted view into the past we've seen and met many familiar faces. These familiar faces, as of my writing this, complicate how we view aging in the netherworld.

Henri in the present, only looks to be in his forties, a reasonable age to have a daughter in her mid to late teens, by human standards. This would place, visually only five or so years older than Kalego.

BUT in the past, while Henri along with future professor Raim and Sabro's father, appears to be in his early twenties, we meet Kalego Opera and Shichiro all as children looking around five years old to my eyes. This is important while we don't get a certain timeframe for the courtship of Ameri's parents, her birth is implied, or so I understand it, to take place not long after they met. Even say Aermi is born two years after her parents met, that would make Kalego Shichiro and Opera all only seven years older than Ameri. But in the present time, Ameri look around 17, and acts as such, while the three above adults all look and act to be in their thirties.

I have privately speculated previously that the way demons age is that human age normally like humans but only up to a certain age after which the rate at which they physically age drastically decreases but doesn't stop. For example one would age normally until say thirty and then they would age very slowly from then onward where centuries replace decades in an unequal balance.

This might explain the ages and apparent ages of some of the older demons in the series, and would assuage some of the complexity or conflict some people feel about Iruma entering a relationship with any demons in his orbit. His LIs are all the ages they appear to be.

The only problem is wee baby Ameri.

So innocent, so cute, so damn fucking complicated.

Ameri, flirting with Iruma and his oblivious self not getting it:

Kalego, in the faculty office, pausing mid-sip of tea and narrowing his eyes at the wall: 😐

Iruma, having fun reading until the door is kicked open and then is scrambling to hide the manga: 😨

Kalego, walking in: Iruma, I need to talk to you about your grades.

Iruma, blinking: But aren't my grades fine—?

Kalego, picking him up and walking out of the room with his usual expression: Shut your mouth.

Ameri, who doesn't know what just happened: ???

Robin: Hey, Iruma! What are you doing in the faculty office?

Iruma, exasperated: Kalego-sensei dropped me off here and told me not to leave because, and I quote, "Some of your classmates are being stupid about you and I can't stand the sight."

Balam, trying not to laugh in his little corner:

Iruma: I'm not allowed to leave Balam-sensei's side unless absolutely necessary.

Meanwhile...

Kalego, absolutely incensed: The next time I see any of you little brats tainting Iruma with your lustful eyes, all of you are dying.

The rest of the Misfit Class, realizing that Kalego is Iruma's father figure and they have to get his approval too: ...

Kalego, hovering behind Irumi (after finding out Iruma crossdressed) with a murderous expression as he looks at everyone else in his presence: ...

Kerori, in Kuromu attire, whispering: Why is he here?

Iruma, sighing: He said he doesn't trust security to do their job properly...

Kerori: Overprotective father figure alert.

Iruma: He's not my father figure...

Kalego, actively throwing hands with creeps and summoning Cerberus to scare off any other creeps:

Kerori: Sure...

Iruma: Kalego-sensei, you can not keep interrupting my outings.

Kalego, raising an eyebrow: Oh, so you hate me.

Iruma: No! I just want you to go back to not caring about me...

Kalego, staring at Iruma: I don't care about you. I care about your education and those other brats are a distraction.

Iruma: Sensei, please... This is not necessary.

Kalego, deadpan: Iruma, respectfully, I will die if I do not insult your classmates and the student council president.

Iruma, torn: ...

Balam, trying to keep his mouth shut to stop himself from laughing:

Henri, internally as he approaches Babyls: Ok, I will get an answer from Iruma and take him to safety.

Henri, approaching Iruma: Ok, there he is. Now to just—

Kalego, materializing out of thin air next to Iruma and looking right at Henri: 🤨

Iruma: Huh? Kalego-sensei? Where did you come from?

Kalego: You aren't in class. I'm dragging you back.

Iruma: Kalego-sensei, it's lunchtime—

Kalego, already dragging him away: I don't care.

Henri, processing what he just saw: ???

Balam: Kalego, when are you going to admit that you actually care about Iruma and consider him your pup?

Kalego: Shichiro, the day I admit anything to anyone else is the day I'm dead and buried.

Balam: You're not denying it?

Kalego: You don't consider him yours too?

Balam: ...

Kalego: ...

Chapter 434: Azazel Henri Demon (7)

It was interesting seeing Marbas explain the situation and demon nature to Merize. I appreciate that he while he is using Henri as a way to get the human's trust, he's also considering the different outcomes of this situation. He's thinking very carefully about the balance of the netherworld and how their relationship could affect their environment.

Henri lost control when he smelled Merize's blood. He was going to do something, but was stopped by Marbas before anything can happen. I wonder if he actually would have hurt Merize or redirected his actions. His introspection period was also super important and helped him realize that he does love Merize 🥹 Though, he sounded a little yandere while describing his feelings...

Another question I wanted to bring up is how long has Merize been there? Assuming she's a woman with the ability to have children, she has to have her period at some point right? Iruma is a boy, so that wouldn't have been an issue since he doesn't bleed on a regular basis, but the assumption is that Merize is Ameri's mom, unless Ameri was conceived via magic or something else???? How are demons born anyway??????

Also congratulations on 9 years of serialization!!!!! This manga has come a long way, but there's only more to go. I love all of their outfits, and Kalego-sensei's cringing face is hilarious 😆
