Tokimoto saw smoke from the distance as he rode on top of his armored chocobo within the Azim Steppes. It was dusk, nearing night as he just left his home, leaving his family, including his youngest grandchild, Mitsune. Tokimoto has business to attend to, which was the killing of monsters and it’s how he made his living. He narrowed his eyes, noting that the distance and area where it originated from.
“That is very close to the village...” He spurred his chocobo to get him to the top of a nearby hill and his eyes opened wide, “That is the village! Gods damn it!”
He snapped the reins on his trusty avian friend as they charged back down the hill and towards his home where his family was. He was most concerned for little Mitsune who went out to play only a few minutes after he left. He knew that that whoever was behind the attack knew when he would take off. This only made him ride even faster.
To his relief the first person he saw was Mitsune. The smoke choked the area as he could hear both the cries and fighting of nearby guards and what sounded like monsters. He was crying, sitting in a small ditch, repeating mom and dad and even papa over and over. The child tried to run to his grandad just as Tokimoto was bashed off of his chocobo by a horrendous beast.
“Mitsune, run!”
It was the last words he heard his grandfather say. Mitsune said nothing, only bolting as fast as his little legs would take him and eventually getting to a nearby river. The boy could hear roaring in the distance and the creature’s red eyes peered over the hill, looking down at him. He jumped into the water and let the current carry him away from it. It’s also the last time he saw his family.
He never saw the heroic fight of his grandfather felling countless demons and corrupted people trying to kill everyone in the village. Alone, he vanquished dozens of them, even their leader, the same monster that possessed Siggurd. After the battle though, his wounds were too much, and he soccumbed to the fight. With what little strength left, he sent his spirit into a place where his grandson could see him again before he passed on into the lifestream.
