When their mouths broke apart, Shitty kept his eyes closed. He wanted to sit in the moment a little longer. Maybe it was graduating, that made him appreciate firsts so much now, but he’d come to see them as magical things. Like, it was something that would never be new again, no matter how many times he did it, and newness, like familiarity, was a lovely, sacred thing.
“Dude,” Lardo said, kind of whispery, and loud in Shitty’s eyelid-dark world, “your mustache is so soft.”
The laughter tasted almost as wonderful as Lardo.
“Hey. Hey, don’t laugh at me.” Lardo pushed at his arm, still curled around her back. Strong and short in his arms, like she could push him around and tuck in wherever she would like. Shitty laughed into her hair. He’d let her in, anywhere she wanted to go.
“I love you,” he said, into the darkness, into Lardo’s hair– a bit greasy and paint-flecked, but sweet-smelling nonetheless– and Lardo sunk into his body with a sigh. Her nose scraped against his collarbone and she did not respond. Shitty smiled, and held her tighter.
I think about Shitty at law school sometimes
Does he stay awake through the night buried in papers, drowning in books and cases, memorizing laws while eating cup noodles and old pizza he found somewhere?
Or is he able to maintain a balanced life and diet cause he actively fights against being stereotyped as that frat jock bro who can’t cook and doesn’t know responsibility when it hits him in the face?
Like, how is Shitty’s life in law school aside from boring networking parties and lack of flow?
